One of our skilled firefighters in action. This is one of a couple of planes and helicopters based at the Mount Gambier airport that are always on call to quickly put out a local grassfire or similar. They only needed two quick runs today to get a fire under control. The flightpath back to the airport was straight over our village, so I was ready after the second run to grab a very quick shot (so quick that I just missed fitting it fully in frame). It was very low as it flew over our roof and gone in a matter of seconds.

These Aerotech firebombers are capable of dumping up to 3100 litres in one go and can refill with water and retardant in as little as 5 minutes.

The skilled pilots are definitely local heroes.

Paris is known for its carousels, with approximately 20 scattered around the city - often close to tourist attractions. Situated below the Eiffel Tower, this is perhaps one of the most famous - and most photographed - of the carousels in Paris. Happy Slider Sunday! :)

---

“The word carousel derives from the Spanish carosella—or the Italian garosello, depending on whom one asks—which means “little war” and refers to a Byzantine battle game brought to Europe during the time of the crusades. The machines began as a safer alternative to jousting and other forms of combat exercises, which often injured knights-in-training. Over time, non-soldiers started climbing on the fake horses, just for fun, and it didn’t take long before skilled artisans got to work carving whimsical figures—not just horses but other farmyard animals, wild beasts, and even mythical creatures. Thus, the modern carousel was born.

Before the advent of electricity, carousels were cranked by hand or pulled by draft animals; sometimes a circular pit was dug into the ground beneath the main platform, where the horses, donkeys, or oxen trudged on their endless rounds. But it was the introduction of the steam engine that spurred the rapid proliferation of the fanciful contraptions throughout Europe and the Americas. These engines also powered the popular band organs, whose carnivalesque music is now so associated with the joy of riding a merry-go-round.

Carousels became wildly popular in the 1800s and continued to enchant not only children but adults as well through the first half of the 20th century. In the U.S., the popularity of the merry-go-round waned with the advent of roller coasters, but theme parks are not as common in Europe. Also, in France carousels typically stand alone, without the accompaniment of a carnival or other rides.”

Being skilled will only take you so far. I put a lot more stock in Being Lucky.

Bianca was a great subject, energetic, easy-going, but that light...I couldn't create that, that had to come on its own.

We drove around the neighborhood, looking for it, the nearby mountains meant we lost sunlight earlier than official Sunset, but all that searching would've been useless if we hadn't lucked down the right streets.

Hell, I got lucky with Bianca being so much fun, she could've easily been a dud.

Sure, I saw the way the light was playing in my front yard, knew I could get this edge light and this wild light effect. Sure I know how to photograph black skin (folks talk about it like it's hard?), know how to talk to my subjects to get what I want.

But, and film aficionados know this intimately, there's so much we can't plan for, that we have to leave up to chance. Older I get more I realize how little I control.

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

---

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

I have written at length, but here is the key article:

**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**

🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)

At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.

While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.

Apple refused to bow to Trump.

If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:

**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**

Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.

A company that does not pander to Trump—

That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

Please take a look if you'd like.

This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.

I'll post the link below.

From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".

The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.

That is the number when it was put up for auction.

No sign was written on the work.

So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.

However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.

A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.

I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

### **Synopsis**

Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.

Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.

To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.

During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:

*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*

Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

It is a photo taken from Eurostar.

This video is an explanation.

I went to Milan in 2005.

At that time # I went from Milan to Venice.

We took Eurostar into the transportation.

This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.

When I changed the track # I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.

Is there a Japanese beside you?

Please have my video translated.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

The mugger crocodile is a skilled predator that preys on a variety of species. Like other crocodilians they are ambush hunters and wait for their prey to come close. They wait camouflaged in the murky waters to launch the attack in the suitable moment. They mostly prey on fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Reproduction takes place in winter months. Females lay eggs in nests that are holes dug in the sand. Temperature during incubation is the determinant of sex in the young. The mugger crocodile possesses the size to be a serious threat to humans, but they are not as aggressive as some other species, such as the sympatric saltwater crocodiles. They are also observed to usually avoid areas with saltwater crocodiles. Muggers are fairly social species and tolerate their conspecifics during basking and feeding.

I read somewhere that illiterate people are often very skilled at hiding their condition. They devise all kinds of complex schemes to create the impression that they can, indeed, read and... in that way, develop their own particular kind of knowledge.

That always stayed with me because it reminds me of how I learn. Obviously I'm not illterate, but I do have a lot of trouble learning certain basic things. Technical things, for example. They completely overwhelm me. But... because I have certain needs related to technology... I tend to devise my own rather cumbersome and time-consuming workarounds.

That's how it's been with photo editing. Let the record show that, although Husband Mike did graciously buy me PhotoShop about six months ago, I've never even tried to use it. I opened it once and was so completely hornswoggled... gaaaah!... that I pretty much ran for the hills. And instead of taking time to learn it properly, I just reverted to doing what I could with the fairly basic software that came with my camera.

Layers. Oh, man. I tried so long and hard with layers. Over the weekend, it finally clicked and I figured out... not how to do it the "right" way... but how to get it to do what I want... in my own backwards, sideways way.

I'm not sure this is a good thing. I mean... if I learned it "properly," I'd be in a better position to learn more... to build skills, etc. And maybe I should aspire to that. But I can't handle organized learning.

I don't WANT to learn all the basics, starting from square one. I just want to learn how to do the one or two things that interest me. And... honestly. It's much more rewarding to blunder through it on my own than to have someone teach me.

The fundamental irony here is that I'm lazy... and, as a result of that, I end up working harder for every little thing than I should have to.

Funny how that works, eh?

And here's how it all relates to the photo.

I spent goodness-knows-how-many minutes shooting this tree in the sunset the other night. I had a particular image in my mind, and was full-on determined to capture it. I kept wanting more... bigger... more tree... more sunset... and... amid all that, I missed the fact that the real worthy image was here, in this relatively tiny frame. Just a few branches with the city in the distance... rather than the grandiose thing I was shooting for. This is kind of pixelly because it's a crop from one of the larger (and soooo unusccessful) shots I took the other night. And (ahem) it really shows up the negative side of my laziness.

If I had ever taken the time to learn photography properly; if I exercised the kind of patience and discipline used by good photographers... I would've SEEN this while I was out. But I was so intent (as usual) on just getting what I wanted... that I didn't realize that what I wanted was crap!

Um... is there a moral to this? Maybe. I can't think of one. But... in amid my joy at "figuring out" layers... this is a great reality check... a reminder that the slap dash approach can sometimes get you by, but it's no reliable substitute for actual learning.

Although these very special cars enjoy the classic 1930's looks, they are not reproductions or copies of any other cars. By retaining the look of the 1930's they are timeless classics.

In 1986, Gerry Khouri began to build three special sports cars in his garage, one each for the three brothers, which led to the formation of the company. The name Bufori is an acronym that stands for B - Beautiful U - Unique F - Funtastic O - Original R - Romantic I - Irresistible.

The production facility in Kuala Lumpur has an installed capacity of 300 vehicles per year, and the company employs 108 skilled craftsmen. Each unit is built by hand using traditional techniques in a 25-step production process. The body of a Bufori is made out of carbon fibre and Kevlar composite material, which is light and ultra-strong. Every Bufori is made to order and can be customised according to the owner's wishes.

Nicely curled waves, crashing close to the rocky shore, do not care if you break your neck.

This is reputed to be one of President Obama's favorite beaches.

This is a side entrance to the once regal Masonic Temple in Aurora, Illinois. Built in 1922, it is now in a sorrowful state. The Masons sold the temple in the mid 1980s and it has been closed since 2006. Because of code violations and possible danger from falling concrete, a chain link fence encloses the building. This image is a composite of 3 photos. I have added the cornerstone with the date and some decorative details from the front door to this crumbling side entrance.

Happy Fence Friday, everyone!

What a skilled hunter my Grey Heron friend from Ames Park is! In a split second, it captured this good sized fish and carried it to the shore where it began making a meal of it.

I often see these birds hunting, but seldom manage to capture them with their meals, because most will be pretty small, and the birds manage to wolf them down very quickly.

I also captured a Great Egret doing the same thing, which is even more unusual, since twice in one day is a rarity indeed!

A skilled surfer negotiates a wave at Huntington Beach, California (also known as Surf City, USA). This was a great day for photographing surfers with that desirable combination of talent, nice waves, decent light and nice colors.

When my wife and I visit the area, we usually take some time to watch and photograph the surfers who frequent the area. I am always amazed that I can get photos like this with a 70-200 mm lens.

If you happen to be the individual in the photo, feel free to print a copy for you personal non-commercial use. All others, please respect the copyright.

He learned his trade from his Grandfather who just happened to make bespoke shoes for Sultans of Africa.

Now not may people can say that.

What a delightful man. He gave up some of his Saturday time to show me around his workshop and tell me his stories.

Taken at Tim's place in SW, Ohio. Tim is a meticulous, skilled craftsman who is currently restoring an old Diamond T and has done other Diamond T's before. Unfortunately, I've seen several in the "before" or partially completed condition, but he's sold them before I saw the completed versions. He has also sold other old trucks I took pictures of and had hoped he'd restore but, he never working on them. He acquired this one from a relative and because it has been in the family and is so rare, I think he may keep it awhile.

Schacht cars and trucks were made in Cincinnati. Although I've lived almost all of my life in Cincinnati, I've never heard of them and don't know where their factory was located. (update:

Thanks to Steve who told me where the factory was and that it is still there - I'll try to check it out) I know a couple of local people who just might have one. I'll have to check with them if and when I get a chance. He'll probably have to fabricate many parts as I doubt he'll be able to find replacements. I love the curve at the top of the door window. This is one cool antique truck.

From Wikipedia:

"Schacht was an American manufacturer of automobile, trucks and fire trucks from 1904 to 1940. The company was started by William and Gustav Schact in Cincinnati, Ohio. Production of automobiles was from 1904 to 1914 with over 8,000 automobiles produced. The company was renamed the G.A. Schacht Motor Truck Company and production of trucks and fire trucks continued until 1940."
