"on my earth you work mainly in ink, tell me son...do you also paint here?"

He was already pulling the sketch pad out of his coat pocket to show me. I recognized my own writing on the inside cover but the ink had been wet so that some of the date was smudged.

W.Wolfson 2020

Missed a couple of days, so sat down tonight and spent about an hour sketching these. I used to have a little bit of a fetish for "day of the dead" figurines, and these still grace my home office desk.

Drawn on pocket-sized Moleskine sketchpad, using Staedtler pigment liners: 0.5, .0.7, 0.1 (in that order).

Again, these are pseudo-blind-contour drawings, where I look at the paper as little as absolutely possible while drawing initial outlines. No penciling -- all pen. I started with a 0.5 pen, and did the outline, and major details and heavy shading. I then called out certain lines with the 0.7. Finally, I did the cross-hatching and stipple with the 0.1.

I decided to photograph this page because a) my scanner doesn't seem to be scanning cleanly, b) it seems the "safest" way to proceed with sharing artwork on flickr, since it's literally a photo.

Pinstriper and owner of the Sketch Pad, Taz Henschen and the Queen City Draggers always put on great car shows with amazing cars and great bands. This year was no exception.

6 sketch pads scribbled on by yours truly - 3 real leather covered (the ones with the smaller cats) and 3 leather like covers. I'll have these with me at thought bubble comic convention this weekend at Leeds - table #62 if you fancy a new pad grab one for only £12 (if you can't make the con drop me a mail and we can sort something out).

always by my flickr friends, and now by an online watercolor sketching class I'm taking through the month of March. Hopefully I'll be able to share the sketch I made of this Yashica after I paint it... I'm just as critical about my artwork as I am my photography... gee whiz, artists!!! ;P

Pencil + digital sketchpad

This past Saturday, I loaded my bike into the car and drove down to Spoke Folk Bike Shop in Healdsburg for a tune-up. A young woman named Kimberly welcomed me in from her place behind the counter. We discussed details of the tune-up package, she estimated the cost, and we scheduled a pickup time for Tuesday afternoon.

Lately I've been padding extra time around appointments to allow more time for sketching. So with the afternoon clear, I set up a folding chair across the street to study the building's domed, corrugated-steel roof. Pulling out my sketchpad, I draw its overall structure, and then dive in with paint. In reality, the building is beige and forest green, but I chose to liven up the colors with orange-yellow for the sunlit areas and purple for the shadows.

Back at the bike shop Tuesday afternoon, I paid and happily wheeled my bike out the door. Another customer just outside commented “nice vintage bike.” I thanked him, but thought “vintage?” It's hard to believe, but it's been twenty years since I bought my Cannondale mountain bike. At the time of purchase, I was planning a ride in the Tour de San Francisco, a challenging and hilly 24 mile race through Golden Gate Park that wound its way up the Pacific coast to Chrissy Field, just south of the Golden Gate Bridge. I participated in the race for two years in a row and it’s one of the most beautiful rides around.

Outside the bike shop, I admired how clean the Cannondale was now, especially when compared to the way it looked in my garage just a few days ago. Stepping my right foot onto the pedal and pushing myself up, I coasted down the street. It felt great to be back on my bike, just like old times. Making my way through the downtown area, I felt the bike humming along with me. What a smooth and invigorating ride!

Now, after having gotten reacquainted with my rusty bicycling muscles, I realize it’s time to get back into shape. I’m looking forward to riding through this picturesque Sonoma County wine country, discovering it up close, and sketching it along the way.

Sea: *points to the chest of the figure on Sun’s sketchpad* “If that’s supposed to be you, kicking that oversized glass’ ass, you’ve drawn parts of your anatomy way outta scale.”

Sun: *elbows Sea playfully in the gut* “Duh, everyone knows all the butt-kick girls in manga have exaggerated physiology. Especially if it’s shōnen.”

Sea: “Yeah, well, you’re gonna fall over on your face, hauling around boulders like that.”

Sun: *smiles, as she resumes sketching* “Falling over’s my specialty, whether I’m hauling boulders in the manga world or pebbles in the real world. It’s what I do.”

Sea: “I wouldn’t call yours ‘pebbles’…*holds cupped hands up to his chest, considering look at Sun*…more like apples, I’d say.”

Sun, Emma & Z: *stops to stare at Sea, varying levels of amusement on their faces*

Sea: *rubs the back of his head, sheepishly* “What?”

Z: “Duuuude, given some serious thought to Sunny’s ‘apples,’ have you?”

Sea: “Um, yeah, well, I’m a guy. We like, uh, apples. Don’t you like apples, Z?”

Z: *nods emphatically, while leering at Emma* “Oh, yeah. Yeah, I really do. An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” *makes like he’s grabbing for Emma*

Emma: *bats his hands away* “Donna you dare, Zinan Eto! We have company.”

Sun (merrily): “Don’t mind us! Grope away!”

Z: “Why thank you. I do believe I will.” *turns to look at Emma, grinning manically*

Emma: *hops out of her chair, backing away from Z, her scowl belied by the laughter in her eyes* “Zinan! Stop it!”

Back in the day, my memory is that California hot rods tended to be low in the front and high in the back which was know as the California rake. Eastern cars tended to be low in the back and high in the front, but I don't remember what that was called. With the advent of air shocks, owners could quickly mimic any look they favored at the time. This one came in low in the back, parked and then dropped the back the rest of the way down to the ground. Anything for the look, but he'd better remember to raise it when it's time to drive home.

what does he care

as soon he will get old

grow lines like a sketchpad

nor hide from critters

ahh such is life of forgotten kin

Café Frequenters episode 257

--------------------------------------------

Jimmy had just written a synopsis of his new story, he was at the café but he needed to sprinkle to porcelain...

...and almost like a normal human diluted by caffeine driving water through his inner mostly organic gut he needed to depressurized so he went the loo...

on his way he passed two youth zipping coffee and doodling cluttered abstract patterns in their sketchpads...

He also passed the waiter who he tipped with a round piece of random metal...

He said: "keep it Jack" since that was the name that specific waiter...

...then he made a swift turn and there was the wooden door leading to the bog...

he went in to the small room and closed the door, DAMN! he though almost as high that it was heard outside his head...

...as he said to him self: Hey Jimmy why does a super-human like you need light, he laughed while he used hyper-sonar, infra vision and Gyroscopic graph to locate the seat...

He was just gonna zip up then he felt a tentacle wrap around his body in a tight grasping grip, another tentacle went for his head and and electric current immobilized him and took control of his organic body and his enhanced systems...

But he could still think...

telepathically he received a message:

Got you your nasty fool, now we are gonna spend some quality time together...

Rainy nights alone at home produced refills and bookmarks for my beloved large Midori TN. I made 4 refills, using Morocco board as cover, ivory Conqueror for the inside cover, and Canson sketchpad paper as notebook paper because it is sooooo friendly to fountain pens. The bookmarks came from a salvaged thick plastic sheet which I trimmed off a folder at the office. Used DYMO to make the labels.

A quick doodle over coffee while doing a bit more research for a commissioned reconstruction drawing. The steam engine shed has some wooden funnels to help draw smoke away from the working area, suggesting the roof would have some sort of vents in it. Drawn with a Pentel P205 pencil on an A4 sketchpad.

Left and right hands together. I largely wet the paper to begin with, then drew with a crayon in each hand.

Back in 2007, at the beginning of my efforts to learn circle-packing, it became one of my long-term goals to design and fold a mantis shrimp. I decided it was time.

I have never posted a photo of how I begin my design process. I paste a picture (in this case two pictures - these buggers are confusing to look at) into Geometer's Sketchpad, overlay line segments over the features I want to include in my design, then construct a branch- and leaf-node tree based on the measurements of those line segments. The next step will be to construct circles for the leaf-nodes based on those measurements, with concentric circles for the branch-nodes representing separation to mark where the rivers will go.

This will take quite awhile - good thing I have summer vacation coming up...

It was just a matter of time before my true love, unicorns, came out in my sketches. My school books are littered with unicorns. One of my unicorns even made it into our high school magazine once. I drew this with a ballpoint pen on the sketchpad. I can't stop!

Finished my last sketch pad so here's the inside cover page for my new one :-) let the scribbling commence.

paper and a couple of free pencils from the doctor's office are quickly becoming my most precious bits of 'gear'.

so far,.. it hasnt been my gear or even my portfolio that has gotten me the job,... it's been these hastily made sketches that have been sealing the deal. there's something magical about storyboards that make prospective clients get excited,... cos it sure aint my 'talent' for sketching :P

Queen City Draggers' 2015 Tradition Rod & Kustom Show at Quaker Steak and Lube in Milford, Ohio. I've been following the progress on "Taz"'s van for several years now. While it now has a motor, it didn't look it was attached to any drive train. The interior is completely undone, but the exterior is coming along nicely. Suicide doors have been added since I last saw it and the rear is pretty well done.

"Taz" is the owner of the Sketch Pad where he specializes in pinstriping. His great work can be seen on many local hot rods. He also seems to be a mover and shaker behind this and several other area car shows and is a charter member of the newly formed "Queen City Draggers" car club.
