Theme : A path through the trees

Lose yourself

my dad wrote this urdu saying in my sketchbook that means "mornings come and evenings come, life thus passes by in front of us." two of his nephews -my favorite cousins- died in the last 6 months, so their memory continues to weigh heavily on us. on the right are some packets of origami paper found at pearl river. i think a collage may be in order.

My new sketchbook. I had been using a moleskine type sketchbook that I bought from Hobbycraft a while back. The pages were quite thin for watercolour washes and buckled a lot. I'd done some research on the internet and found that Stillman & Birn were quite a popular brand in the sketching world. I chose the Alpha range becasue I really wanted something in size and format to my sketchbook that I use now - which is landscape and pocket size. The Alpha range is 150gsm and medium grain. Looking forward to giving it a try.

Another day at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). So many things to sketch there and I decided to sketch in the biodiversity gallery. This boy can't pass up sketching a bunch of sharks and bugs!

While I was finishing up this sketch, a group of young kids (approx. 6-7yrs. old) sat literally at my feet. From what I gather from the talk made by the group leader on all things shark and bugs, this was a kind of science group and the quote was said by the group leader/lecturer when she handed out some shark skins, a dinosaur tooth and other items for the kids to touch. Two things really stood out in my mind about this encounter: the group leader was super patient with the kids, especially one know-it-all. And the other was the quote illustrated. Her form of address and tone made me think of Mark Antony's famous opening line in Julius Ceasar: Friends, Romans, countrymen….

(The drawing was cropped on the left side because my scanner is too small.)

I started by looking at the stones in the fireplace, then doodling took off in another direction.

Glimpse into my sketchbook with new work starting to be developed. Currently I am trying to turn lampworked bones into wearable pieces combined with anatomical shapes in gold.
