I just returned from an eight day long railfan trip with two friends, an annual adventure that always takes us somewhere new in search of locations to explore and trains to photography. This time we met in Minneapolis, Minnesota and excepting only brief sojourns into adjoining areas of Wisconsin the entirety of the trip was spent in the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes. After we all met on Friday we headed out for an afternoon exploring the complicated Twin Cities Terminal complex and then ended our day down river along the busy joint BNSF and CP River Subs to Hastings. Saturday was spent entirely around the Minneapolis & Saint Paul areas and then most of the day Sunday as well before heading down along the Mississippi again to spend the night in Winona.

Monday was focused on one specific goal in that small southeastern city and once it was accomplished we headed up state and spent the remaining five nights in Duluth. The twin ports area and the Iron Range have become a railfan mecca of late due the concentration of older classic GE and EMD power operating on the CN’s former Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway. To put it mildly, the trip was wildly successful beyond anything I could have hoped for and I came away with thousands of photographs of a region that had long been on my bucket list to visit. So consider yourself warned that I will be sharing hundreds of photos of this trip over the coming weeks and months and I hope they give you a tiny fraction of the joy looking at them that I had in capturing them. I will share a top shot from each day of the trip. Not all days were equal of course and the beginning of the trip in the twin cities was plagued with dreary and overcast weather not lending itself to the best photography and some days yielded far more trains than others based on the goals of the day and the location we were at.

Day 7 was the third of four full days and five nights spent with Duluth as our base as we explored the railroads of the famed Iron Range region. This is an area that needs no introduction to even the most casual fan as the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway is in a word legendary. I won't bore you with pages of history as I couldn't do the road or region justice anyway. It simply needs to be experienced for oneself. But I will direct you to two resources. Absolutely check out the fabulous historical information here: www.missabe.com/

This was undoubtedly the most wildly successful day of a highly successful trip. We were up and out early based on intel about a southbound ore train and then kept the party rolling all day with some lucky catches and some obscure out of the way chases that visitors rarely bother with. Of all the days this was probably the hardest to choose a favorite from. But I suppose this is the most dramatic so I'll offer it up as the first of many photos from this day.

Southbound U713 has a trainload of pellets fresh from the Minntac taconite plant headed south to Proctor Yard. The sizzling train is steaming in the cool damp morning air as the same tunnel motor trio from the prior day glows in the morning light with fan favorite BLE 909 leading the way. They are approaching the intermediate signal at MP 26.6 on modern day CN's North Division Missabe Subdivision mainline.

A much photographed sunset by people in Southern Ontario. Well covered by TV news and The Weather Network. What do you do when you only have your 150-600mm zoom lens with you on a wildlife search and this event happens. Two images stitched together for a panorama.

The same halter top as before. The pants are no name pants I got from a friend. They have shiny flecks all over them to make them look like faux snakeskin. The finish of the material is a cotton/denim.

We made another delicious visit to Sheboygan's Las Brisas restaurant Friday evening. I would have shown the margarita as well, but it "evaporated" and I couldn't guarantee that the fajita would be untouched before the next one arrived. ;-) Yes, I caught the steam rising from this delightful dish.

We've been having record breaking temperatures of 101°F, high humidity with little relief in sight. Ouch!

Early in the day Badlands National Park was hazy/smoky due too the wildfires in California. Fortunately, later in the day, the smoke cleared out and some really nice light lit up the area that I was at and I was able to get a few shots that I liked. (and a bunch that I didn't like...delete, delete delete)

Sizzling in the pan: mustard seeds, cinnamon sticks, star anise, kasuri methi and turmeric. It's the spice base for a mild Malaysian curry; I then added soy sauce, shallots, fresh ginger, garlic, aubergine, tomatoes and lentils, lots of water and simmer for 30 minutes.
