this is a teaser image - i'll upload the single images as well as a *massive* video of the full 3D volume rendering (DVT) of my skull, teeth, and face - plus the whole story in words! =)
as a bonus, i'll be able to show you the difference between a female and a male skull, as i now possess a DVT (computed 3D x-ray image) of both.
i'll try to get this done within the next two days, but please bear with me - it's already late in the evening, i only got back from the hospital today - and i still need to eat, unpack my bag, and do some laundry. ;)
plus, the whole progress of rendering this video will take me a couple of hours...
anyway, here's the story - in short - before hand; i had a MASSIVE cyst growing in my right maxillary sinus (it nearly filled up my whole sinus, see the image for details and compare it to the empty left maxillary sinus!). the cyst originated from the 1-6 tooth (next to last tooth in the upper right jaw in my images, as i lack the 1-8). the infected tooth - the cause for the cyst - had an incomplete root canal filling that became infected with bacteria (bad dental work). the cyst and some jawbone was removed; two roots of the 1-6 tooth were amputated. the incision was made from 1-4 to 1-7; the maxillary sinus has been opened through the oral cavity in the 1-6 area.
more details within the next days, stay tuned! =)
52-year-old man with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of lungs and cervical nodes, undergoing panendoscopy workup to look for primary tumor. I found the primary in a tonsil, so this is an incidental finding in a biopsy of the right pyriform sinus.
As meaured on the processed section, the parathyroid gland measured 0.3 cm in greatest extent.

Exposures: 10/20
Processing: +1,17 EV added and contrast curve set to "Linear" in Canon DPP, images exported as 8-bit monochome .TIFFs and assembled into .AVI in ImageJ. Movie was sliced into four overlapping segments, which were stacked in Autostakkert2, stitched back in Microsoft ICE and deconvolved (Richardson-Lucy algorithm, Cauchy-type PSF, 3,1 units, 5 iterations) in AstraImage 3.0. Final touches in Photoshop.
Note: it seems that 2400x2000 pixels is the upper limit for resulting picture size in Autostakkert2. Bad news...

Not at all happy with these three photos. Overexposed due to low light, and defective Kodak film. But, it is what it is.

hooray, finally a medical image of myself again... bah. -_-
this is a scan of a print (i know, i scanned it the wrong way around) and it's not that easy to see in the first place - but the right sinus maxillaris contains a large cyst that is extending from one of 1-6's roots, most likely.
1-5 seems to be involved, as it became sensitive to cold things. i've got some facial pain / headache, but i'm hoping to cure that with a bit of cortisone and ibuprofene. sounds mad, and it's not a permanent solution. why dont you get surgery, you may ask. true. but i currently cannot afford to be sick and in pain for a few days - as i'd be after surgery for this - while i can be pain-free and okay with ibuprofen (i just feel an incredibly annoying pressure in my right cheek and eye). it's gonna have to do for about two more months. crap.
good note is, it currently doesnt seem to be badly inflamed or a danger for my right eye. you bet i'd undergo the surgery immediately if it was, no matter what the results would be for me and especially others (e.g. not being able to care for my sick friend)!
what would surgery be? cystectomy and root amputation. in other words: cutting the gums away, exposing the bone. then drilling through the skull from the oral cavity and into the sinus. then removing the cyst from the sinus through the incisions. then sawing off the tooth's roots. then putting / sewing it all back together. and most of all, if you want sedation or general anesthesia, it's not covered by health insurance. what the heck? for a simple gastroscopy that causes no pain but a mere gag reflex, i'd in theory get fucking i.v. midazolam, but for this surgery, i'd get nothing but local anesthesia with lidocaine? thank you very much. well, it makes more money that way, though, i suppose - at least for the hospital. i'd estimate 30% of patients have to go to the psychiatric ward for a day or two after that surgery, as they'd probably have a nerves breakdown. hooray for stupid laws!
"Sinus-Clearing 101" or "Look Dad, No Film!!"
Model: Margaret Warren
Fashion: vintage nightgown
Hair: long, straight (and wet)
Time: about 9:30 pm on a night in May 2007
Place: Northern Alabama woods, near a certain artist's farmhouse outside of Brent and Centerville, southwest of Birmingham
Mood: playful, in the flow
Props: shower curtain, garden hose
Photographer: McKenzie Oerting, PHC (purple-haired chick)
Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC-H5
Film: none :-) "Look, Dad, no film!"
NOTE from the chick pointing the camera:
Our lovely model, Margaret Warren, grew up in a home where creativity was encouraged, at the knee of her father, pulitzer-nominated documentary photographer Earl Warren (who, incidentally, is still shooting, still winning awards). Whereas I grew up ten years earlier, which is significant only in that it places *my* father's formative years during the Great Depression. So my dear daddy -- engineer, corporate executive, "organizational asset" -- invariably uttered a particularly discouraging string of words whenever I produced my camera and tried to take any more than one shot of a subject. It was a line my friends, including Margaret, often witnessed him utter, and one it's guaranteed Miss Warren never heard *her* father say.
Dad (usually when I pointed the camera toward him):
"You're just wasting film now."
You should have seen his face the first time I showed up at a family picnic with a digital camera. Sure enough, he was soon provoked to his trademark summation: "You're just wasting film, now." I cannot begin to tell you how gratifying it was to FINALLY be able to answer him, 'No, I'm not, Dad. I'm not using any film at all!"

OPG (orthopantomogram) of BEFORE and AFTER the surgery - click "ALL SIZES" above the photo and then "ORIGINAL" to view the animation!
details: amputation of 2 out of 3 roots in 1-6; removal of minor amounts of jawbone and opening the maxillary sinus from 1-6 area (incision was made between 1-4 and 1-7); complete revision of the right maxillary sinus (cystectomy).
BEFORE: complete roots on 1-6 tooth (yellow), bacterial infection, massive cyst (red)
AFTER: amputated roots on 1-6 and diffuse shadow (blood and mucus forming after surgery) in right maxillary sinus
sorry for the bad "after" image quality; i was only able to obtain a print which i scanned, while i had the digital image of the "before" surgery status OPG.

As the sun rises over Sinus Iridum, the mountain Laplace casts a beautiful shadow onto the maria floor, plus the mountains along the edge of Sinus Iridum are illuminated. Plato is seen to the top right. This is one of my favourite Moon phases!
Taken from Oxfordshire, UK on 8th October 2019. Taken with a William Optics 70mm refractor and ZWO ASI120MC camera with Powermate 5x Barlow. Mounted on an EQ5 Pro mount on a permanent pier, tracking at lunar speed.
2,000 frame video shot, the best 45% was stacked with Autostakkert! 3, processed in Lightroom, Fast Stone Image Viewer and Focus Magic. I was imaging between 20:30 – 21:20 BST. The seeing was not great and the Moon was quite low in the sky, but I’m always amazed at what this little camera can achieve on such a small refractor!
Panorama of Sinus Iridum

On the large Mare Imbrium there are several "Dorsa": long elevated "wrinkles" in the otherwise rather smooth mare.
