Hertfordshire. It is one of those lanes where you pray that you are the only one on the road.

When I was out mountainbiking I passed through this piece of woodland just a short distance from home, I thought the pines were so nice that I had to go back with the camera a little later.

I liked the curving line of the singletrack and the treetops as they began to catch the golden light from the sun.

Today I got up for sunrise at the location where Nine Mile Creek dumps into the Minnesota River. A walk with the dog there, on the previous evening, was capped off by a sunset, of exceptionally glorious color, which jump started my desire to get out with the camera.

The Minnesota River shore is a popular spot for fat tire riders where they have created a winding path that gracefully threads its way between the trees. It also provided an easy path to follow as I hiked to the area where I had counted eleven roosting eagles the night before.

We last visited Sandwell Valley Park trails a couple of years ago, and Kay decided she would walk down this rock garden. She had a thing about them. This year, she didn't even realise she had done it.

My knees are enjoying having a granny-gear to use up this section of my commute. 26/36T on the MonsterTrucker sure beats 34/34T on the MonsterCrosser.

Yes, that is a toaster.

I'm heading back out on the road for a couple of weeks and wanted to share another fall mountain bike photo before I left. I may not get another chance for fall photos this time around. This one is from late last fall - October. It was probably one of the last rides of the year. Maybe I'll get lucky and the aspens will stay golden for a few weeks.

As much as I love winter and skiing, I'm kinda tired of being cold. Here's to warm summer days in the mountains.

Unfortunately summer evenings have slipped through our fingers, long nights setting in.

Check out this short I put together for Eskapee and get some inspiration for next year..

The Quiraing, Isle of Skye

After Kilt Rock we continued north for the Quiraing. This was always going to be the hit or miss location for me on account of Mrs R's height "issues" and before someone pipes up... we're not talking short***e either! Having failed to get her to the top of the Old Man (ooh matron!) viewpoint that is, this was always going to be a non-starter. However, I convinced her that it was worth the drive at least as the alternative was the long way round to Uig and our holiday home in Kensaleyre.

The Quiraing can only be reached by another single track road that cuts straight across the peninsular between Staffin (east) and Uig (west). The drive was quite uneventful compared to the Elgol trip with very few cars on this remote road. What did surprise me was to find a cemetery quite a way along the road and near one of the walking routes for the Quiraing. It had a very nice tarmacked car park as well, but you couldn't park there as the gates are permanently padlocked unless you are soon to become a patron. The main parking area sits on top of the plateau but you have to negotiate a switchback to reach it. The first is a right-hand bend that gradually steepens and then a tight left-hand, which is even steeper - if my memory serves me right - before summiting for the car park.

It occurred to me... if you were to die on Skye then you'd better kick the bucket on the east coast. Those on the west would have the more perilous journey to the cemetery. I wouldn't fancy the chances of the coffin staying put in the back of the hearse travelling down that switchback... just a thought.

Anyway, cutting to the chase... raining, dull, flat light, Mrs R underwhelmed again (although she did like the Storr), we didn't stop and carried on to Uig for a bit of light lunch. I have no idea what this picture has to do with all this waffle!

Is there anything better than riding good singletrack in the aspens?
