#latergram Went to @bean_brothers in Seoul last week and tried the Adado.

A washed Ethiopia from Yirgacheffe, it's a mix of local landraces and some JARC 74 varietals. The roaster describes it as having a clean texture and body, roasted medium-light, with notes of peach and jasmine tea.

As straight espresso, I'm really getting that tangy peach. Wonderful floral jasmine note. Very bright but not too astringent and very balanced. Easily one of the best espressos I had in Korea.

Sadly modern macchiatos just aren't as common as I'd like, as I'm sure this would have made a killer one. No cortados here, and their macchiatos aren't of the modern folded and poured kind. I tried it as a flat white, and the foam weight was great, but it's just too much milk for me.

A great shop, a must visit if you end up in Seoul looking for coffee.

A washed process Caturra varietal produces by various smallholders in La Plata, Huila, Colombia. The roaster’s notes are bkackcurrant, honey, and almond.

As straight espresso I get lemon, almond, biscotti, cassis. Great balance. It’s good to be back.

As a macc I get the cassis and almond dominant.

Went to @prototype.coffee in Vancouver to have their tasting flight of the Rungeto Kii (with the Aklilu Honey as a cold brew finish).

First, the Rugeto Kii, as espresso and macchiato. A Kenyan mix of SL-28, SL-34, and Batian varietals, this coffee was grown at 1.6-1.8 kmasl by local small holders and washed processed.
.
As straight espresso, it’s juicy in mouthfeel with a dominant pineapple tasting note. Nice gentle tartness and lingering acidity. A bit of a lingering viscosity, hence that guava note.
.
After some steamed milk to prime the palette, it’s really gentle in a macc. Pineapple is still there but much more muted, almost like white grape. Gentle acidity maintains in milk.

The Ethiopian makes an absolutely wonderful cold brew. Sweet and smooth, watermelon really prominent.

Visited @iktsuarpokcoffeestand this week to try this year’s Mohamad Ali roasted by @thebarnberlin on split.

A little different each year, this natural processed batch of mixed heirloom varietals from Jimma, Ethiopia is grown at 2050 m.a.s.l. It is named for the producer Mustafa Mohamed Ali and grown according to organic certification practices. The roaster's notes are strawberry, chocolate, and creamy.
.
In straight espresso it’s tart with notes of cherries and chestnut. A touch winey, I don’t get the strawberries this year.

More of a gentle cheery vibe than strawberry in a macc. Very nice in milk, very demure wineyness persists.

At @moduscoffee in Vancouver trying the last of the Latif on split.

A washed Caturra from Taminango farm, Nariño, San Lorenzo, Colombia grown at 1.7-2.0kmasl. Sharif’s notes are cane sugar, green grape, and apricot pie.

Tart green apple as straight espresso. Tart grape vibes too. Tobacco leaf note, nice sour vibe (not unpleasant!). I’ve had this one a few times and like it a lot.

Apricot in the macc. Nice and sweet. Sharif’s roasts are such a wonderful expression of what he’s trying to achieve with @moduscoffee. Also @jeskaa is easily one if the best baristas in the city, which certainly doesn’t hurt. 😉

Grabbed a split of the La Reforma by @stereocoffeeroasters at @dismount_to, one of my favourite neighbourhood haunts in TO. 😊

A washed Red Bourbon grown by the Alvarez family near the Santa Ana Volcano at 1.3-1.5kmasl in El Salvador. A third place winner in 2011 the @cupofexcellence, this particular roaster’s tasting notes are blackberry, cherry, and milk chocolate.

I get bright, winey, nice red fruit character as straight espresso. Low-key but still pretty expressive. I like this one.

Nice and mild tartness in a macc. Sweet like a bourbon should. Great both ways.

A naturally processed heirloom varietal from Darii Kojowa, Guji, Ethiopia. The roaster’s notes are sweet, syrups, and sugar plum vibes.

Bright and astringent as straight espresso. Nice balance for something as bright as it is. Wonderful syrupy character
.
Has kinda a bergamot/herbal character in milk. Still really nice. Reminds me of a single origin espresso that I’d get in Seattle.

Went to @revolvercoffee to try the Mohamed Ali by @thebarnberlin on split.

A natural processed batch of mixed heirloom varietals from Jimma, Ethiopia grown at 2050 m.a.s.l. The coffee is named for the producer Mustafa Mohamed Ali and grown according to organic certification practices. The roaster's notes are forest berries, ripe strawberry, and chocolate, with some subtle jasmin and black tea notes. I missed this coffee the first time it came to @revolvercoffee, although I did have the batch roasted by the lovely people at @ovenheavencoffeeroasters, this is the first time I've tried it roasted by @thebarnberlin.

Straight, it lives up to the hype and is very much worth your time. Like candied cranberries. Bright and tart with a very smooth finish. Really complex and good; adventuresome and rewarding. A bit of a lingering floral character. A lot going on.

Still very tart and balanced in a macc. Really magical both ways. Still super complex.

Glad I got to try it this time, a wonderful espresso.

At @tlscoffee in Toronto trying some of the Los Narajos on split.

A IHCAFE 90 varietal grown at 1.45kmasl in Celaque, Honduras and washed processed. The roaster’s notes are caramel, kiwi, and candies pecans.

Very bright, juicy, astringent, with a bit of a winey vibe as straight espresso. Nutty finish. The notes aren’t very distinct but it’s enjoyably bright espresso. .
Really caramel-y in a macc. Get the kiwi on the onset. Super expressive in milk, still has the gentle nutty finish of the straight espresso. A really nice macchiato, all said and done.

A washed heirloom varietal from Shakiso, Ethiopia.

Gentle and floral as straight espresso, got this kumquat vibe going on. Really juicy, love the mouthfeel.

Great milk with good integration as a cortado. Lovely roasted lingering aftertaste. Very tea-like. Maintains its floral character.

At @sorrycoffeeco in Toronto having a split of the Finca Maputo from @sethtaylorcbd.

A washed processed Typica varietal from Ecuador grown at 1.35kmasl. The roaster’s tasting notes are wildflower honey, soft lemon, and orange blossom.
.
As per usual, @sethtaylorcbd tends towards the brighter side with his roasting. As straight espresso it’s bright and juicy with a loud but surprisingly gentle lemon note. Floral with a strong acidity and good balance.
.
Super nice in a macc. The sweetness of the roast really comes out and the lemon is nice and doesn’t compete with the milk. Nice and mellow.
