Not the Carpenters or Earth, Wind & Fire but Great Britain's National Bird, the Robin. This gorgeous Robin wasn't half belting out a tune to rival, or even better, any chart topper at RSPB Old Moor the other day.
The Robin is one of the few birds in the UK that sing all year round. This is due to the importance of holding winter territories. Only for a short period in late summer while they are moulting and inconspicuous do they stop singing. Both sexes sing.
Autumn and spring songs are distinctly different. The autumn song starts after the moult, from late summer onwards. It is more subdued and melancholy in its tone, while the spring song is powerful, confident and upbeat.
The spring song can start as early as mid-December, reaching full force in spring. Its purpose is two-fold: to defend a territory and to attract a mate. Therefore, the spring song is far more powerful in males.

Blue Grosbeak singing away. I have been chasing this one for a while. Taken at the Biltmore Estate, Asheville, NC.
An Oriental magpie-robin (copsychus saularis) singing out in the early morning. These birds are known for their melodic song and, sadly, were sometimes kept as caged birds for that reason. Photographed in Khuk Khak, Phang Nga, Thailand.

Kies in unvorstellbaren Mengen lagert dort, wo sich während der Eiszeiten die Alpengletscher ins Flachland geschoben haben. Hier und da werden die Felsenkrümel Jahrtausende später ausgebaggert, aufbereitet und als begehrtes Baumaterial verwendet.
Eine der Förderstätten zwischen Bodensee und Donau befindet sich in Schwackenreute an der Ablachtalbahn Mengen – Stockach – Radolfzell. Anfang der 2000er-Jahre, als der Name »Biberbahn« noch lange nicht erfunden war und Personenverkehr weitab des Denkbaren lag, stand es – wie schon in den Jahrzehnten zuvor – wieder mal nicht gut um die Strecke. Schwackenreute, der riesige Bahnhof im Nirgendwo, wirkte schon halb stillgelegt. Eine 294 brachte von Mengen her vereinzelt Gaskesselwagen zur Entladung. Sporadisch wurde auch Holz verladen. Und in der wärmeren Jahreszeit gab es eben ein bisschen Kiesverkehr. Auf dem ehemaligen Pfullendorfer Streckengleis hat man das »graue Gold« in Schüttgutwagen verladen.
Immer mittwochs, ganz früh, machte sich eine 225 (hier die 081) von Singen her auf, um einen für die Schweiz bestimmten Zug zu bringen, zu beladen und wieder abzufahren. Das Zeitfenster musste streng eingehalten werden, denn für die Rückleistung stand der Abschnitt Stockach – Stahringen nur bis 8.00 Uhr zur Verfügung, ehe dort im Personenverkehr der Halbstundentakt einsetzte.
So begann gegen 7.30 Uhr, kurz nach dem Beladen des letzten Wagens (siehe Bild) stets auch eine relative Hektik. Weichen aufschließen, Zug umsetzen, Weichen wieder abschließen, Schlüssel verräumen, Fahrerlaubnis einholen. Und ab!
Dann herrschte wieder wieder stunden- oder tagelang Stille auf den Gleisen von Schwackenreute.
Lange sollte es auch nicht mehr dauern, bis die Kiestransporte Richtung Radolfzell gänzlich vorbei waren. Das Streckengleis nach Stockach war irgendwann vollständig marode.
Wie es dann zur Rettung kam, ist eine andere Geschichte… ;-)

Le zoo de La Boissière-du-Doré est un parc zoologique français privé fondé en 1984 par Dany et Monique Laurent1, sur le territoire de la commune de La Boissière-du-Doré en Loire-Atlantique, à la frontière du département avec celui de Maine-et-Loire. C'est leur fils Sébastien Laurent qui dirige le parc zoologique depuis 2008.
Le zoo de la Boissière-du-Doré présente plus de 70 espèces et près de 600 animaux sur une surface de 20 hectares.
Les animaux sont présentés derrière des fossés ou des vitres selon les cas. Aucun grillage ni barrière ne sépare les visiteurs de la faune. Des présentations en semi-liberté permettent une approche plus réelle du monde animal.

One of the reasons we went to eastern Washington was to photograph sandhill cranes. Sadly, I was unsuccessful in getting close enough to get decent photographs of cranes. However, this sweetly singing meadow lark made me feel a little better.

Sometimes when my Magpies come inside, and if I don't respond in good time, they will call to announce their presence. In this brief video, one Magpie sings, while the other, just outside the back door, sings a duet. They were fed soon after.
