2/52 Simplicity

I’m feeling a little drained this week so I opted for a simple portrait for this weekly project. And I keep having to remind myself that is okay. The purpose of this project is to exist in photos. They don’t always have to be extravagant and skillfully edited. Sometimes they can be simple. Stay tuned to see what’s in store for next week.

How is it that even a 7 year old gets soooo happy just with a few balloons. I need that simplicity in living.

Make no mistake, simplicity can only be achieved with hard work.

Just like the Dark Knight was a based on the character of Batman, we wanted to create a build which contained the stealthy presence of Batman’s toys but infuse it with the sinister appeal of the Joker. Why? We were intrigued with the clean looks of going all black yet wanted a twist that would mimic the Jokers desire to twist social order – except our twist would be in an automotive fashion. With that said, our 197 6 Toyota Celica was created. Some have dubbed our creation as Japan’s vintage “Muscle” but we just like to call it The Dark Knight aka The SICK2K.

To help carry over the Honda-centric soul of this 1977 Toyota Celica, Randy also decided to install the factory Honda S2000 seats as well as the digital instrument cluster.

Of course the build wouldn’t be complete without the push button start and interestingly enough, that seemingly simple project required that he install the ignition unit into a factory Honda to have it programmed and the dealer – only to have to bring it back to his shop to reinstall the unit.

Starting off with a rusted and beat up chassis, our team re crafted and restored this vintage ’77 Toyota to what is today – a testament of old school flavor mixed with new age technology. The body lines of the Celica have been modified, we incorporated the use of Japanese front bumpers and installed a host of knick knacks that make this build a knock out sensation in the import scene. At first glance the Celica might look like simple but our concept for this build was to build beauty out of simplicity and the attention to detail is what kills the crowd. Powered by a Honda S2000 motor and transmission, this brute beast comes complete with push button ignition, digital gauge cluster (also from the S2000) and a laundry list of so much more. Some have questioned the use of the S2000 power plant and recommended that we stay with the 18RG but in the end we wanted something different while creating a build that was unquestionably unique and different. With that said, many have still frowned upon the decision to do so but in the end all we have to say is, “Why so serious?”

My dress to wear to a wedding. It is fully lined!

Again, another image-only pattern fudging procedure. But dude, crinolines are super easy to whip up. I almost bought a contemporary pattern during one of those 99¢ sales, but it was all just a bunch of rectangular shaped pattern pieces. Seemed a waste.

I'm a sucker for light (aren't all photographers). Sometimes the subject can be simple, but as long as the light is right, simplicity is just fine! I liked the bright statement of the Anthurium flowers in the red vase in an image otherwise desaturated by light. I don't reach for the little Voigtländer 40mm f/2 lens very often, but it often produces very nice results when I do. guys check out my recent favorites! i've just found this great new style of photography, it was kinda strange, with strange concept and strange set up and, even stranger editing. I was surfing through the photo owner's connected accounts then I realized so many people had done this kind. I had thought to myself, oh my god wtf is this why is everyone doing it why am I the only didn't know anything about this yada yada yada but then I found out that it's an actual category called surrealism.

It's cool to know though. Human creativity, as its finest. And mannnnn I'd love to learn how they photoshopped the pictures that way.

I made the wrap version, with the short sleeves and the belt.

The fabric is a cotton voile from Westminster Fibers, in a colorway that is ideal for someone with three black and white dogs.

I thought the fabric would be too sheer to wear without a slip or lining but it turns it's absolutely fine without, which is great. This a perfect summer dress.

Project Details

Pattern: Simplicity 3686, View A & B

Fabric: Wool blend suiting

Lining: 100% Polyester

Notions: 7" zipper; one 3/8" button; four 5/8 buttons; 1/4" wide bias tape; hem tape

Description: Unlined wide leg trousers with wide contured waistband and button flap pockets. (cuffed hem optional)

I really like this style of pants and to me it's one of the easiest trends of this season. In my opinion, this style looks best when paired with a fitted top. I decided to wear this tailored shirt with them and the cuffs really balance out the legs.

These pants are constructed very basically with a fly front... if you've made pants before, these will not be a problem. I added in 3 1/2" of ease because I wanted a bit of a loose, slouchy look and they are very comfortable. These pants have a great rise which is right below the waist. I love the curved waistband. There was not any gaping and I didn't have to make an alteration to it. Instead of using the fashion fabric on the waistband facing, I used the lining fabric because I didn't want to take a chance that the wool would be itchy. I finished off the facings with the 1/4" wide bias tape, just like on a lot of RTW trousers.

I didn't like the faux flap back pocket option so I created double welt back pockets and included the pocket bags and all. I used Claire Shaeffer's method from "High-Fashion Sewing Secrets From the World's Best Designers". The front pockets are triangular shaped, button flaps. I love the front pockets. They are the type that extend to the CF which eliminates gaping. Since view A was the cuffed variation, I opted to use this one so I wouldn't have to alter for additional length as I would normally have to do. I added hem tape to my 1 1/2" hem and left them extra long to be worn with heels.

The last rose of my garden for this season and a cup of tea.,Moment of bliss.
