Cocktail Studies. 2018.

Lots of drink recipes call for simple syrup or sour mix. If you're an aspiring bartender, WatchMojo.com shows you how to make these two ingredients so you can mix drinks like a pro. Here: www.watchmojo.com/index.php?id=8500

Inspired by a breakup this cocktail includes 101-proof spicy bourbon, Torani Amer, lime juice and ginger simple syrup.

Torani Amer is an attempt to recapture and bottle pre-1975 Amer Picone, an aperatif that was very popular in Europe. Its cult status was cemented by the fact that it was forbidden from being exported to America. It's similar to Campari, Cinar, etc. except those are digestifs, meant to be drunk after a meal, and Torani Amer is meant to be drunk before a meal. The taste is a mix of sweet and bitter, of burnt caramel and orange.

I tried to make a cocktail with this and gin and did not end up liking it. I'm thinking it might end up getting mixed with some bourbon. Also it probably wouldn't hurt to cut it with some citrus. OH! Maybe I make some sweet peach iced tea. Hmmmm.

Peach Simple Syrup

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

1 peach, sliced into small pieces

Combine water, sugar, and peach slices into saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer, stirring frequently. When peaches become tender, remove and pulse in a food process. Return processed peaches to saucepan and continue to simmer for a few minutes. Remove from heat, strain, and store.

Since I realize I’ve so far neglected to document this staple of American cocktails.

2 oz rye whiskey (Rittenhouse Bonded)

3 dashes Peychaud's bitters

2 dashes Angostura bitters

1 sugar cube (1/4 oz. simple syrup)

absinthe rinse (Absente Liqueur)

Muddle sugar cube (or stir simple syrup) with whiskey and bitters. Stir with ice and strain into chilled rocks glass rinsed with absinthe. Garnish with lemon zest.

Birthdays=cupcakes, so I made her these vanilla cupcakes brushed with tart lemon simple syrup & lemon buttercream.

Hope you have a great day, A!

Yesterday I made a cocktail version of this by adding a little gin and opting for a lemon-lime mix. It was a hit!

I celebrated last night with a proper Sazerac...the official cocktail of New Orleans.

Also, first time I'd tried the Sazerac 18-year rye. OMG it was awesome.

Lemon myrtle-infused gin, green chartreuse, muddled mint and simple syrup, with a sliver of sugar cane for decoration.

Tried a few herby, fun cocktail recipes this week. Both recipes turned out very nice.

My take on the classic Templeton Rye Old Fashioned. Add 1oz of simple syrup and five dashes of West Indian Orange Bitters to a rocks glass. Muddle one small blood orange, adding the juice and some pulp to the glass. Fill glass with ice and pour in 3oz of Templeton Rye. Stir and enjoy.

I quickly stopped by Erick and Zanna's apartment for Cinco De Mayo.

Erick had a few serrano peppers left, and I decided to make a peppery margarita. Here's the recipe:

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of water

1 habenero pepper or 1 jalapeno pepper or 2 serrano peppers

Tequila

Lime Juice

Triple Sec

Boil the sugar and the water in a pot to create a simple syrup. With a knife or a fork, carefully make several punctures into the pepper(s). Toss the peppers into the boiling simple syrup mixture for about 5 to 10 minutes, letting the oils infuse with the liquid. You can also add a tablespoon of lime juice to enhance the flavor. Next, cool the entire mixture completely.

To assemble the margarita, combine 1 part tequila, 1 part triple sec, 1 part lime juice, and 1/2 part of the peppery simple syrup in a shaker filled with ice. Shake well, add to a salt-rimmed glass, and enjoy.

another gala event for 250 folks - half got this dessert and the rest got lemon tarts.
