NREX 8628 wears faded Southern Pacific colors. A couple former UP units keep it company. The 8628 was built for the C&O in 1966 as an SD40 and later rebuilt as SD40M-2.
Almost fifteen years after the demise of Rock Island, this pair of SW1500s were still present at Silvis.
This Peoria to Silvis train has rounded the wye in Bureau Junction and the two EMD products are in notch 8 to get their train up to track speed.
Silvis Peoria is being lead East by two IAIS SD38-2’s and NS GP60. It picked up IAIS 702 in Bureau Jct. The SD38’s were in full dynamics down hill and full throttle up hill. The Engineer notched up at every crossing and anywhere there were people. We got it at every spot we could. Many people were mindful of others and created photo lines. There was no foul language only SD38’s.

The main building is huge. Inside here you'll find a UP Challenger, a 2-10-2, and more. I wish they had been open this weekend.

No trip to the Quad Cities is complete without a trip to Silvis. My first trip here had Rock Island units sitting on these tracks.

Silvis, Illinois has always been somewhat of an urban legend amongst railfans here in the States. For years, it was home to a National Railway Equipment facility, the remnants of which can be seen on the right hand side of this photograph. It was always said that you usually didn't want your favorite locomotive to go to Silvis. Why? Because chances were it wouldn't come back the same way you remembered, if it came back at all. This wasn't always the case, but it oftentimes was, and the yard became known for its numerous (and massive) locomotive dead lines. Railfans from all over would flock to Silvis to get a glimpse at railroad history. It is not hyperbole to say that a well-framed shot of a Silvis dead line could capture as much as three generations of locomotive design.
The Silvis that most of us know ceased to exist in 2021 when NRE shut it down entirely. In 2022, Friends of the 261 purchased the shop complex, and they are poised to swoop in soon to convert the yard into a hotspot for diesel and steam locomotive preservation. So Silvis's legend will live on, except now, instead of living on through dead, rusty diesels, it will live on through live steam. I think that's a nice tradeoff.
Oh, and the Iowa yard is cool too! You're bound to see BICB and/or CBBI do their thing there if you arrive around 8 in the morning. It's worth a look!
