Just outside of IAIS Burr Oak Yard, train BIRDSW bound for CSX Barr Yard heads west through Robbins, IL with IAIS 150 (Ex NSM SD38-2) at the helm. Seen here heading under the Rock Island searchlight cantilever as the engineer opens up the throttle with some smoke on the Metra Rock District. Taken: 2-2-20

It’s over a year later and all four IAIS SD38-2’s have been put in storage at Silvis Yard for three new GEVO’s. Shortly after this was taken, they were stored after a month, these always one of my favorite units to catch, always made an attempt to shoot one when they came to town. Luckily, all sets of Rock Island signals are still up and active.

Iowa Interstate 513 is tied down on the mainline at Silvis, IL with CRBI-27 while the 0730 SISW-28 works the yard with a pair of GP38-2s.

Former CNW SD50 7009 sits in the "save" line at NRE's Silvis facility. Most of the engines that appear to be "saved" have been shuffled around and occupy the two southern most tracks, along the long driveway from the east end.

A pair of Iowa Interstate GP38-2's deadhead the IAIS business cars Abraham Lincoln and Hawkeye from South Amana to Silvis for a future trip with the Board of Directors. Holding the mainline at Silvis is BICB-17 with a pair of ES44AC's.

You're not seeing things, those cars were purchased from the KCS. The paint compliments the IAIS, so they were kept in the same colors.

The line-up of locomotives is still impressive at the NRE site in Silvis, Illinois. Think of all the history at the site from locomotive design to paint liveries.

Various motors from various lineages await their fate at NRE's former Silvis Shops. NRE has closed this facility and all these motors will be either scrapped, or find new homes,

Silvi Paese, a quaint village perched on the hills of Abruzzo, Italy, is steeped in history and rustic charm. The photograph captures an ancient wooden door, its surface weathered and scarred by the passage of time. The once sturdy planks now bear the marks of countless seasons, with cracks and splinters testifying to years of exposure to the elements. The door, though aged and worn, stands as a silent sentinel to the stories and lives that have passed through its threshold.

The facade surrounding the door is equally ravaged by time. Large sections of the stucco have crumbled away, revealing the underlying bricks of the wall. The exposed brickwork, with its irregular shapes and worn edges, adds a layer of texture and history to the scene. The wall, like the door, tells a tale of endurance and resilience, having withstood the wear and tear of centuries. The decay, rather than diminishing its beauty, enhances the rustic allure of the structure, evoking a sense of nostalgia and timelessness.

Silvi Paese itself is a place where history and tradition are deeply intertwined. Situated in the province of Teramo, this medieval village boasts a rich cultural heritage. The narrow, winding streets are lined with buildings that reflect the architectural styles of different eras, from the medieval period to the Renaissance. The village offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, which has influenced its history and economy for centuries. Once a strategic lookout point, Silvi Paese played a crucial role in the defense against pirate invasions and other maritime threats.

The surrounding region of Abruzzo is known for its picturesque landscapes and historical significance. Nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the area is dotted with ancient villages, castles, and churches. The region's history dates back to Roman times and is rich with legends and folklore. Silvi Paese, with its weathered door and crumbling facade, is a microcosm of this historical tapestry, encapsulating the passage of time and the enduring spirit of the Abruzzese people.

Railroading Heritage of Midwest America's Train Day and Car Show at Silvis, Illinois. The star attractions were Santa Fe B40-8W 537, UP DDA40X 6936, and Jeddo Highland Coal Company 0-4-0T No. 85 which pulled short trips around the yard. There were rides on a Dakota Southern motor car and even a hand pump car in operation during the event.

Providence and Worcester Railroad road freight WONR is at MP 43 on the Norwich Branch mainline, the historic Norwich and Worcester Railroad which opened through here in 1840. They are heading back south 40 miles to their home terminal of Plainfield, CT after making a turn up to Worcester put have paused here to pull and spot Impact Plastics less than a half mile to the north and will pause again just ahead to work International Paper before continuing south.

Leading the way are four four motor GEs, two in Genesee and Wyoming orange and two in original PW red and brown. 3910 on the point is an ex LMX General Electric B39-8E, part of a group of 102 built in 1987-88 for GE's leasing arm and immediately put on long term lease to Burlington Northern. PW picked up six of them around 2001, but this particular one came to the road later as a replacement for 3908 that was damaged in 2019. 3910 looks fresh because it was only just renumbered and painted in June 2022. Prior to that it still wore LMX gray and its original number, 8534, as an RLCX and then NREX lease unit before spending some time in the Silvis deadline.

I had the drone hovering over the old pedestrian bridge pier and although I may have been slightly higher than the old bridge, this certainly gives the feel for what it could have been.

With the yard crew now on CBBI's power, they didn't waste anytime getting the outbound ready to go. After a few moves, the crew would break up the power leaving 509 and 516 to run CBBI alone while 513 would pilot the 2nd eastbound, SIBI, later in the night.

That's Tom Farence down below, wishing just like me that BICB's rear-end wasn't sitting so far east.

ATSF B40-8W 537 with a freight train in Kansas City, Kansas on October 27, 1997. This locomotive was recently restored to its original colors by Railroading Heritage of Midwest America (RRHMA) in Silvis, Illinois.

With the sale of NRE's former Rock Island Silvis Shop to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest American (Friend's of 261), the yard is going to start looking different soon. NRE has assembled all of their "keeper" locomotives onto 2 tracks. Everything saved were 6-axle EMD's: SD40-2s (including various rebuilds and tunnel motors) and SD50s.

NRE is leasing back a portion of the property for 5 years, so these EMD's will stick around a little bit longer.
