I received a text this morning that NS 8098 was at the east end of Silvis yard, so I made a detour on my way to work.
NS 8098 and BNSF 8018 were sent east on last night's SASI "Turn" to handle an ethanol train to Peoria later in the day. Most of the ethanol train was from the inbound SASI, so the SISW crew just used the road power to make their job easier, leaving the regular yard power (seen in the background) to sit.
This is the first time I've gotten a clean, sunny shot of the Conrail heritage, right in my backyard!

The line-up of locomotives is still impressive at the NRE site in Silvis, Illinois. Think of all the history at the site from locomotive design to paint liveries.
A pair of Iowa Interstate GP38-2's deadhead the IAIS business cars Abraham Lincoln and Hawkeye from South Amana to Silvis for a future trip with the Board of Directors. Holding the mainline at Silvis is BICB-17 with a pair of ES44AC's.
You're not seeing things, those cars were purchased from the KCS. The paint compliments the IAIS, so they were kept in the same colors.

Various motors from various lineages await their fate at NRE's former Silvis Shops. NRE has closed this facility and all these motors will be either scrapped, or find new homes,

With PESI-14 tied down on the mainline, the 0900 SISW-14 departs Silvis on its transfer run to Rock Island and the CPKC.
Even though the SD38-2's have been back in service for a while, I still go out of my way to see them as much as I can.

Joe Moth made his last run on the IAIS on December 20, 2024 and finished out to his official retirement on PTO. Joe's last assignment was the 0900SIRDSW which makes a transfer from Silvis Yard to Rock Island and CPKC's West Davenport Yard. On this day, Joe would take the transfer to Rock Island and be relieved so he could enjoy a luncheon put on by the IAIS.
Joe worked for over 34 years, starting on the SOO Line on a section gang in Linwood (Buffalo), IA. He moved to train service after 7.5 years, working for the IMRL, IC, WSOR, and the IAIS.
Congratulations, Joe!!
Thanks to a few text updates from Bob, I was able to catch BICB sliding into Silvis with IAIS 501, CN 5561, IAIS 514 and 5 IAIS 3-pack double-stack cars. The CN SD60F is going to NRE for some minor work.

While the 8258 is still marked for Illinois Central on the sides, it has a faded Chicago Central green diamond logo on the nose!

Silvi Paese, a quaint village perched on the hills of Abruzzo, Italy, is steeped in history and rustic charm. The photograph captures an ancient wooden door, its surface weathered and scarred by the passage of time. The once sturdy planks now bear the marks of countless seasons, with cracks and splinters testifying to years of exposure to the elements. The door, though aged and worn, stands as a silent sentinel to the stories and lives that have passed through its threshold.
The facade surrounding the door is equally ravaged by time. Large sections of the stucco have crumbled away, revealing the underlying bricks of the wall. The exposed brickwork, with its irregular shapes and worn edges, adds a layer of texture and history to the scene. The wall, like the door, tells a tale of endurance and resilience, having withstood the wear and tear of centuries. The decay, rather than diminishing its beauty, enhances the rustic allure of the structure, evoking a sense of nostalgia and timelessness.
Silvi Paese itself is a place where history and tradition are deeply intertwined. Situated in the province of Teramo, this medieval village boasts a rich cultural heritage. The narrow, winding streets are lined with buildings that reflect the architectural styles of different eras, from the medieval period to the Renaissance. The village offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, which has influenced its history and economy for centuries. Once a strategic lookout point, Silvi Paese played a crucial role in the defense against pirate invasions and other maritime threats.
The surrounding region of Abruzzo is known for its picturesque landscapes and historical significance. Nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, the area is dotted with ancient villages, castles, and churches. The region's history dates back to Roman times and is rich with legends and folklore. Silvi Paese, with its weathered door and crumbling facade, is a microcosm of this historical tapestry, encapsulating the passage of time and the enduring spirit of the Abruzzese people.

With the yard crew now on CBBI's power, they didn't waste anytime getting the outbound ready to go. After a few moves, the crew would break up the power leaving 509 and 516 to run CBBI alone while 513 would pilot the 2nd eastbound, SIBI, later in the night.
That's Tom Farence down below, wishing just like me that BICB's rear-end wasn't sitting so far east.

For the first time, UP 4-6-6-4 No. 3985 enters the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America ex-Rock Island shop in Silvis, Ill. RRHMA crews had spent a lot of time cleaning up the shop and it really showed. The place is more than large enough to handle rebuilding 3985, and has an overhead crane that can lift the boiler off the frame, which needs to be done as 3985 has some issues on the bottom of the boiler. Here's hoping she's back under steam soon!
With the sale of NRE's former Rock Island Silvis Shop to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest American (Friend's of 261), the yard is going to start looking different soon. NRE has assembled all of their "keeper" locomotives onto 2 tracks. Everything saved were 6-axle EMD's: SD40-2s (including various rebuilds and tunnel motors) and SD50s.
NRE is leasing back a portion of the property for 5 years, so these EMD's will stick around a little bit longer.
