Architect: Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975)

Built in 1916

St Birgitta’s Chapel is the first chapel of the cemetery and this is the altar in the chapel of St Birgitta.

The Eastern Cemetery (Östra kyrkogården) is famous for its design and beauty far beyond Swedens borders. The Cemetery was created by the architect Sigurd Lewerentz, who from 1916 until his death in 1975 was engaged in the cemetery's various stages of development. After a contest Lewerentz was chosen to design the cemetery and the related buildings.

Markus Kyrkan, Sigurd Lewerentz, 1962

Malmövägen 51,121 53 Johanneshov, Stockholm

Sigurd Lewerentz’ most noted building came into existence after winning an invited competition in 1956.

Two buildings are located on either side of a courtyard – on one side, the church itself, which is linked to the parish premises ad assembly hall; and on the other the registrar’s offices with a belfry tower and archives.

Dark bricks from Helsingborg are freely laid in running bond – the vertical joints have varying widths which meant that no brick needed to be cut. Lewerentz referred to Persian architecture as a source of inspiration. The church in Bjorkhagen demonstrates how it is possible to be both visionary and well rooted, Lewerentz was already regarded as a phenomenon in Swedish architecture. His integrity and sure handed sense of form leaded to solutions that were several decades before their time. The church was awarded the first Kasper Salin Prize in 1962.

My brother, Tronn, found Pusskin out in the country in -30 C weather (Alberta!). She ran out in front of his truck when driving home from work, so he pulled over to see if he could find her. He walked over to the ditch and yelled, 'Pusskin!'. She literally ran up and jumped into his arms - the name has since stuck. I went from a proud Aunt to a full on Momma to Sigurd and Pusskin a year ago and loving every minute - they are both little survivors!

ANSBACH, Germany - Representatives of Emergency Services Directorates and Fire Chiefs from garrisons across Installation Management Command, Europe (IMCOM-E) met at the IMCOM-E Fire and Emergency Services Region Training Center in Ansbach on Urlas Kaserne to tour the facilities and observe certification training of U.S. and German firefighters Oct. 17, 2018. The USAG Ansbach facility is the singular fire training facility for IMCOM in Europe.

While on site the visitors learned about the different training opportunities, observed and took part in and refreshed their fire-fighting and rescue skills in a variety of training scenarios including fire ground operations, breaching and rescue operations, equipment maintenance, hazardous materials response and emergency communications procedures.

Pictured: Engine 1 from the Installation Management Command Europe Fire and Emergency Services Region Training Center in Ansbach, Germany, sprays water at a fire emanating from the facility's aircraft fire training simulator. Fire and rescue training is a required, regular part of fire fighters annual performance testing and certification.

Fire Protection Specialist Sigurd Mack from IMCOM-E Headquarters in Sembach, Germany explained that Ansbach site was invaluable in qualifying and certifying the proficiency of a firefighter's skill.

"The course objectives and structure offered here is based on requirements issued by the National Fire Protection Agency, which the Department of Defense has adopted " Mack said. He explained that the course includes academic study as well as weeks of practical exercises, including fighting various types of fires, and required safety measures.

"We adjust training and certification procedures to meet Host Nation safety standards, but within the NFPA framework, and with DoD recognized certification" explained Mack.
