It was love at first sight when a milk bottle and newspaper landed on a front porch early one Monday morning in Brooklyn. The milk bottle read him like a book when his headline turned bright red and in turn her milk almost to cream when he gave her a second look. The screen door suddenly swung open and as quickly as they were brought together they were torn apart! Once inside the newspaper sections were yanked out. One section was rolled up to swat a fly and another section did "duty" on the bottom on a bird cage. The milk bottle chilled out in the refrigerator next to the olive spread. Sadly as fate would have it destiny as recyclables separated them, again and again, because they came from different elements. But love wasn't blind when the newspaper turned into a dictionary and the milk bottle into reading glasses and he showed her the meaning of love.

This is a fairly typical sight on the river.
The efforts to rehabilitate the Pasig seem to focus on relocating shanties like these. To me, however, these shanties are like the canary in a coal mine. That so many of the very poor settle on the river's banks is a measure of how bad the water is. Those who can afford to live elsewhere do.
