The Desert Lion king looks to expand his kingdom by assaulting the border 'Dragon' castle of the Chin.

The castle is a centre of trade for the region and the road to the gate doubles as a dry moat in times of siege.

The Desert Lions dig a trench to get them closer to the walls without exposing themselves to the deadly Chin crossbows. They pepper the defenders with ballista bolts while their heavy infantry attempt to gain access to the battlements via the ladders.

However, the Chin defenders are repelling any assaults and the king must reconsider his strategy.

Day 219 of 365: a year in songs and photos

Song: Depeche Mode, Personal Jesus

A few years or so ago I called myself an atheist. I'm more on the agnostic side of things now. I believe in something, I'm just not sure what. Not an all-seeing god, I know that much. But....something. A power, a force, a thing that guides the universe through its life. Nature. Fate. Something.

Did you ever try to think of this place as nothing? Before there were planets, before there were stars, before the sun and the moon and all the space matter between. Was there ever nothing? It literally blows my mind to try to perceive that in my head. I have to stop myself from thinking about it because it feels like it will short circuit my brain. Nothing. Was there ever a time when there was nothing? This place had to get here somehow. And if some force created some dust that eventually became our universe, where did that force come from? Where did that dust come from?

I'm a scientific person by nature. I'm cynical and I disbelieve a lot of what is told to me. So believing in God was always a struggle for me, even though I was raised Catholic. Always in the back of my mind there was a thought of, how is that possible? And when I would ask someone that question, they would just respond with, with faith all things are possible. I never had that blind, unwavering faith needed to fully believe in God and heaven and all that the Bible teaches us. So for me, believing that an all powerful being created everything we see around us with just a wave of his hand is incomprehensible.

I was sitting in church during my grandfather's funeral mass last year and I looked around at all the stained glass, the statues, the crucifix, all the signs of faith and devotion that were scattered among the church. I looked at my friends and relatives around me, all of them reciting the words to prayers with meaning, if not fervor. I found myself caught up in the rise and fall of the sit/stand/kneel rhythm, reciting the words along with the crowd. I still knew all these prayers and all the motions. There was a time when all that ritual and recitation meant something to me, but now it was like reciting a passage from Macbeth in front of my 9th grade English class. So why did I join in? For my grandfather, I suppose. Because in my mind, there is always that little slice of space I save for my what ifs and a big one is what if I'm wrong? What if there is a God and a heaven? What if Jesus was not just a regular man with mission and a posse, as I believe, but the true son of God who could perform miracles? What if I'm wrong? And that's not about me. It's not about me getting up to heaven and being turned down because I didn't believe. It's about the ritual prayer surrounding the dead and dying. What if prayer means something? What if every prayer counts? So I say the Hail Mary and the Our Father because I don't want to short change Grandpa on a prayer. I don't want him to be up there in heaven looking down on his funeral and wondering why I was unraveling the thread on my sweater instead of saying a Hail Mary for him. I know that sounds strange to most of you, but it's what goes through my head.

Which is what leads me to recognize that I am not an atheist. If I am leaving that door open that I could be wrong, then I am not a true atheist. But that door is wide and it opens to a big place that encompasses more than the Catholic God. In fact, it opens to no god at all, but to the idea of something god-like. Possibilities. Fate, Nature, a spaghetti monster.

I do believe there is something guiding us. Something that lays out a path for us. Whether or not we follow that path is our own choice. Everything we do has a purpose in this world. Every choice we make, every mile we walk. I may not believe in a greater god, but I do believe in a greater purpose.

My daughter gave a reading at grandpa's funeral. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.

To everything there is a season,

and a time to every purpose under the heavens

I spent the entire ride to the cemetery thinking about that, which lead to thoughts about faith and hope and belief. Looking out at miles and miles of the dead laid end to end at St. John's Cemetery, the inscriptions on their headstones testaments to faith. The families that erected these statues and headstones and memorials have true faith that their loved ones have gone to a better place. They have true faith that there is somewhere beyond here where souls gather to watch over the living, a place with no pain and no sorrow. It's an incredible thing to believe. It has to be a great comfort to the living to know that the loved one they are burying is seated in a kingdom with their god. It must help to ease the pain of loss. I wouldn't know. I don't have that faith. I don't have that belief.

What I do believe in is something I can't put a name on. Something that binds us all and keeps us moving on despite what we have put this world through and what it puts us through. Something that keeps life going, that keeps humanity from dying out and our universe from collapsing. A force that is outside our full understanding, yet exists in each of us in many different forms. A force that moves us along to our destiny, unseen, but felt deeply in thousands of ways.

Maybe love is what I believe in, in all its forms. Love of each other, love of this world, love of your family, love of friends, love of your god, unconditional love, romantic love, love of life. Maybe that is what lights the stars.

I photgraphed my friend Lauren in different outfits.

These birds taunted me the whole trip - a new species that I never quite 'got'. Despite lying in wait for hours getting nothing but a tick infestation, and despite seeing or hearing them at five or six locations, this pic (rescued entirely by electronic darkroom magic) is probably the best of 100 attempts. They do tend to keep inside dense stream-side undergrowth but are not particularly shy or retiring.

Stiking colour and markings - in a more complete view the buff sides are quite stunning. Said to be declining due to loss of riverside vegetation from cattle and and burning.

After a total fail of a wander about Newcastle looking for dark spaces to paint in, I ended up in the side crypt of St Nicholas' Cathedral waving the Lenser P14 covered with a red plastic bag as a diffuser. A bit of the yellow and blue LED swirlage could probably have done with not being there.

The now trendy neighbourhood of Manhattan's Lower East Side is a mix of old tenement buildings and modern towers. Restaurants, bars and galleries abound in this once working class district.
