When I met Cody (code_joe on Flickr, foreground right) at a Flickr meetup I organized last February, he told me about a group called Shutterbugs that organizes events on Meetup.com. I've subscibed to the group for months now, but finally went to a meetup of theirs.

It is interesting to note the differences between Flickr / Upcoming and Meetup.com. On Flickr, when you post photos from a meetup, others can comment, favorite, add notes, view your EXIF data, see your photos on the map, tag your photos with keywords (as can you), invite your photos to groups (as you can add them to groups), order prints, use your photos via Creative Commons licenses, etc. On Meetup.com, you can add photos to an album and give them a caption, but that's about all. What Meetup.com does have that neither Flickr nor Upcoming.org has is that there are more event organizing tools, including the ability to review events you have attended. I thought that was handy. It's nice to have alternatives, but I think I still prefer meeting other photographers online on Flickr and offline through Upcoming.org events which can be populated by photos on Flickr. But maybe that's just because it's what I'm used to.
