The crowd swelled to about 3000 people and speakers talked from on top of a rental truck. By 4:30pm the crowd was growing too large for the sidewalk, and there was a mass movement of people into the intersection of Lake Street and Minnehaha Avenue.

When the intersection was initially blocked with people, one car continued to move right through the people and ended up runnig over a young woman. Video of that event has been widely circulated. Later, the crowd parted to let the ambulance through to pick up the injured, and the rally continued.

This is the sixth Minneapolis protest over police brutality in two weeks. This one was organized and led by Minneapolis high school students, some of whom walked out of classes last week in protest. The protests are in response to unarmed people of color being killed by law enforcement in the United States such as the Michael Brown who was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Another example is Eric Garner who was wrestled to the sidewalk and held in a choke hold until he was dead. In both cases, it's been announced there will be no criminal charges against the police.

PNNL hosted its third annual Seattle-based Pink Elephant Unicorn (PEU) cybersecurity capture-the-flag at Northeastern University Seattle on Jan. 19-20.

The event welcomed 75 participants, including students, researchers, and cybersecurity professionals, to solve cybersecurity puzzles and practice security techniques in a friendly capture-the-flag competition.

The event replicated exercises from the original 2014 competition launched by PNNL in Richland to invite users of all skill levels to collaborate, innovate, and have fun while solving cyber obstacles. The winning teams—Yeah Risc is Good, Penguinsanon, and Shutitdown—received laser-etched badges and the player voted MVP of the winning team took home a 3D-printed pink elephant unicorn.

After the Lake Street exit, the next exit before downtown was interstate 94. The police seemed determined to not allow the march on another highway. A few police cars moved ahead at a high rate of speed to block the exit to I-94. The protesters paused on the bridge over I-94 but continued to the downtown exit and marched to Minneapolis city hall.

Common chants:

Black lives matter

No justice. No peace.

The march started around 5:30pm with a somewhat disorganized start. The idea was the banners would be in the front of the march, but that idea was sometimes forgotten. The crowd seemed restless and walked fast. That might have been because it was 25 degrees out. The march turned onto Hiawatha Avenue, which blocked northbound traffic. Police cars rode behind and ahead of the march.

Common chants during the march:

No justice. No peace. Prosecute the police.

Hands up. Don't shoot.

When I say Michael, you say Brown. Michael. Brown. Michael. Brown.

In the morning, South High School students held a sit in for four and half hours (the length of time Michael Brown's body was on the street after he was killed). Then they walked out and marched to the Minneapolis police 3rd precinct, traveling down Lake Street and temporarily blocking eastbound traffic. Police cars blocked traffic for the march. Outside the police station, impromptu speakers shared their personal experiences dealing with police. Some spoke of returning to the same location at 4:30pm for another protest and march.
