Shoving on the rear of T92 is a pair of B23-7s of Seaboard and ConRail origins. They are smoking it up as the engineer assists the four units on the head end as they traverse the grades associated with valley of the South Fork of the Obion River. This is just one of many short grades they worked along the sawtooth profile of the former IC line between Jackson and Fulton.

An MRL set of Helena helpers shoves a Westbound BNSF train up to the continental divide crossing the bridge at Skyline, MT. These helper sets add 21,000 HP to the train, which is necessary to make it over the pass. When taking this picture, the winds were 60 MPH with 80 MPH gusts the temperature was 16 degrees.

UP local YSB52 has completed its work in Sheboygan and is shoving north past the venerable signals at Saemann Avenue on the north side of town. The train is on its way up the Haven Industrial lead to retrieve an empty centerbeam from Richco Structures in downtown Haven.

Dear Friends, I haven't been able to get out much for morning detail collection recently. Please be patient with me during this dry spell.

The sign over the mailbox says "Don't put ads in here!"

A four pack of SD40E helpers shoves a loaded crude oil train through Portage.

Shoving onto the CSX James River line with 4 loads of wood chips. GP7 number 1 is former L&N while the RF&P 101 is Ex-RF&P 104, on lease from Old Dominion Chapter, NRHS. Interchange takes place two miles west of here at the small yard at Strathmore.

Both of these units have since been replaced by rebuilt/painted former NS GP38-2s.

After pushing a northbound Delaware & Hudson train up the storied Belden Hill grade, three Alcos depart the south portal area of the tunnel. The signals indicate that the train is well on its way to the next landmark, the oft-photographed trestle at Harpursville.

CN/IC Blue Devil C40-8W 2466 shoves a grain train into the elevator in Paxton, IL.

A BNSF coal train rounds the curve at Breezy Point west of Belmont on Nebraska’s Crawford Hill on the afternoon of July 11, 2008. A helper set of three EMD SD75Ms shove on the lone Union Pacific AC4400CW DPU on the rear of the train, with the west unit former Santa Fe No. 218, now BNSF No. 8218.

Shoving at 30MPH from the rear Charger, Amtrak #336 does the best it can down the C&M Subdivision near MP 37. Not entirely sure what the major malfunction was, but they were pretty late....and getting later.

The helpers on the rear of 66Z shove the train uphill. In just a few miles, the upward climb will level off and eventually peak at Gallitzin.

CSX KH00 shoves past the old Reading signals at the LG 41.3 on the Norfolk Southern’s Lurgan Running Track. KH00 uses NS trackage rights to run from Hagerstown to Shippensburg on the Lurgan Branch and then run down the Lurgan Runner a couple miles to CSX track for the remaining 6 or so miles of the trip to Letterkenny.

Wheeling train 643 shoves up grade to the Markwest gas plant at Westland in fading afternoon light. This former Montour Railroad branch was relaid in 2012 after being abandoned for nearly 30 years.

A trio of NJ Transit GP40's shove an empty rail train across the Middle Brook and into the siding at Bound Brook, NJ. The rail train was then left for eventual pickup by Conrail after having dropped rail in Raritan and Annandale along NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line. A remnant of the once four tracked CNJ mainline is still evident by the extra two bridge girders to the right of the train.

With Ardmore distillery dominating the background, 47712 shoves 1Z16 0900 Inverness to Glasgow Queen Street excursion past Kennethmont.

The helpers on the rear of UBHF keep things moving for the last mile before coming to a stop at Thurmont. In addition to providing some extra power, the helpers will make switching out the NVR lumber yard just ahead a bit easier.

A three unit set of manned helpers are pushing hard on the rear of a MRL LM train as it nears the top of Mullan Pass. Just through the cut and around the corner is the famous Skyline Trestle and around the corner from that the east portal of the tunnel through the summit and across the continental divide. Far from home, BLE Tunnel Motor's 910 & 901 are being used as Byron Hill's Shovers, as they shove A49081 18 up into Byron, Wisconsin on the first leg of their trip down CN's Waukesha Sub to Chicago. After separating on the go, the Shovers will return light power toward Shops to shove S708, a molten sulfur load, up the hill.

EJ&E 659, IC 6204, and EJE 662 are the helper set shoving M343 up Steelton Hill 11 years ago today on May 24, 2009. The J SD38-2s worked around the Twin Ports in helper and transfer service from April to October 2009, although one (674) stayed along the Missabe into 2010. Looks like on this day the Helper Link isn't working with the crew on the south-facing unit. Here this helper set is working under the Willard Munger Trail in far western Duluth, MN.

Traffic was really down in 2009, so unfortunately it kind of reminds me of 2020. This was the only train I managed to catch on this beautiful Sunday before Memorial Day back in '09.

Y222 shoves over the top of the hill to the West Industrial Park out of Pinoca Yard.

203 has made up 202’s train and is shoving it to the roadway east of the bridge to perform an inspection and air test. The 122 cars was a result of them not running for 3 days, rather than the mine being busy. According to the locals, the mine is busier than ever and looking to hire 500 more employees, but the railcar traffic was down significantly. The AZER was averaging 3 days per week vs 5-6 days per week a year earlier. I am sure this could change at a moments notice based on the needs of the mine, but the train crew indicated things have been slow for quite some time.

Maryland Midland UBHF departs its origin point with a pair of Geeps shoving at the rear. Although not an everyday occurrence on the MMID, manned helpers appear on UBHF when it is particularly long. The falling leaves of October-November make this an especially prime time to capture these.

A pair of SD60Es shove an eastbound stack train up the hill through Summerhill, PA. The endangered position light signal bridge seems to tower over every other structure in town, although not for much longer.

After dropping a few segments of CWR in Annandale, the NJ Transit rail train heads back east on the Raritan Valley Line with the GP40 trio now shoving the return to Raritan Yard (12/17/22).

Trains must reverse on a headshunt when coming in from the direction of the electric arc furnace. We have been waiting for a movement that never comes at the rear of the coking ovens on the late afternoon of July the 25th 2022. But this train comes in to break up the wait. The day has been hot and the locos side doors flap open keeping its internals from overheating and the slag is hot.

With the favoured blue puller in the lead, CN L518 shoves a cut of hoppers across a small wooden bridge and into Invista. Standing on the ice of Cataraqui Bay, the wind coming off of Lake Ontario sure made for a frigid time out there but it was worth it for a shot you need solid ice for.

Soo 4413 shoves a cut of intermodal towards the Port Terminal intermodal ramp on the evening of June 3, 2018. CN’s Duluth Intermodal Terminal opened last year to handle container traffic for customers in and around the Twin Ports. CP transfers the containers over from Superior and spots them here in Duluth.

Not sure how traffic is doing for CN into the ramp but does provide a chance more photos of CP switching on the pavement of the Port Terminal. Before the intermodal, CP was only using the track on the right so cool seeing them use the interesting switch in the "street" again.
