You can take those grey shell rocks you find at the beach and sand them smooth. They look much cooler then. While you sand them the shapes visible on the surface change. Alot of times it will look like there are distinct pictures in them. In my case I sand too much and loose them. There is this one guy, though, who is a master! One Day after he got to know me he opened his brief case and spread out a black velvet cloth. Then he carefully placed some of his favorites. They were amazing. They didn't even look like rocks, they looked like...Well, I didn't ever think of taking any pictures. These ones I did because his looked so cool, and I wanted to do it. These are just three test subjects I did - You can at least get an idea of the rock material and the start of the process.
One of the most exotic looking shells I've found - it is quite heavy, and those patterns look like someone painted it.
Purchased from the Shell Shop in Morro Bay, California. Not sure if the shell container is vintage but the sticker is ink-jet printed. I wish they had used a glossy sticker.

This was a gift from an old friend who found it in a thrift store. The shell pieces are hand carved, engraved and drilled, and the cording is done by hand, the clasp an old one no doubt salvaged from a broken string of pearls...
