Shell shot with a macro lens

One of the "shell trees" on Wild Beach at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge / Assateague Island National Seashore (NPS). Visitors like to decorate the remnants of trees, once in the marsh, but now overtaken by the beach as it shifts.

The day we stopped by the Ehler farm to see this MM-1210 was quite an exciting day. They had several older John Deere's, Internationals, Case's, a Massey as well as a few other tractors all plowing corn ground. This is the first sheller my Grandson had ever seen up close.

Yep, you are seeing these right.

Though not apparent from this photo, the beach is made entirely from millions of cochina shells. The beach is on the way to Monkey Mia, and the whole area is covered in shells to a depth of up to 3 metres. It was amazing to see.

Visited in April 1992. (also in July 1993)

This is scanned from the original slide.

Billions of tiny white 'coquina bivalve' sea shells form Shell Beach. The coquina bivalve shellfish has no predator in this locality. The shell fish have existed in huge numbers for thousands of years, then died natural deaths then been washed ashore. Shell Beach is covered for a 60km-long stretch to a depth of some seven to ten metres. Shell Beach is one of only two shell beaches like it in the world.

I took a picture of this shell that I bought a few days ago.

Olive shells are gastrpods in the family Olividae. All have cylindrical, glossy shells with narrow, elongated apetures.

Letttered olives havea thick shell with a small pointed spire about 1/9th total shell length. Shells that are not faded or beach-worn are covered with overlapping, slightly blurry, brown zigzags that are darkest below the suture and as part of two, broad, spiral bands. Oliva reticularis (the Netted Olive) has no bands and a larger spire of about 1/7th total shell length.

The species' range is from North Carolina to Florida and the Gulf states of North America, including Louisiana and Texas; It also occurs in Mexico, and may also occur in Brazil. The lettered olive typically lives in near-shore waters, on shallow sand flats near inlets. The empty shell is occasionally, or sometimes commonly, washed up onto ocean beaches.[

Lettered Olives are carnivores and actively prey on bivalves and crabs.

The lettered olive is the state shell of South Carolina.
