My father has very kindly sent me some copies of his pictures taken on the 19th October 1956. Four years almost to the day before the disaster and some 9 years before I put in an appearance!
Not much going on out there these days, but if you persevere something interesting always turns up. This little hawk surprised me by perching very close to me on a fence rail, and when he flew off, I really wasn't expecting him to land in the field almost as close as when he was perched.

So what is the best resolution for sharp images on Flickr?
Of course, the resolution, in which the images are displayed ... so no interpolation is needed.
But in which rez are the photos displayed? That varyies ...
In my opinion and with my tests, I would say, that the following rezs are good ones:
1024 x 683 (does mean: 1024 x somethingsmallerthan1024, example aspect ratio 3:2)
683 x 1024 (does mean: somethingsmallerthan1024 x 1024, example aspect ratio 2:3 )
These are the resolutions in which images are displayed in the "large" presentation. Also it's the maximum rez for the no-charge usage of Flickr.
Also good ones:
2048 x 2048
2048 x 1366, 1366 x 2048
These can be downsampled to quarter rez with almost no loss in sharpness (due to factor 2), but you also have a large backup of the file on flickr ... (also rez like the following are good ones: 4096x 4096 and so on ..., ... all with multiples of 1024 on the long side).
Examples: Compare these shots, both sharpened, but the 1024x683 shot was sharpened after downsampling:

www.flickr.com/photos/galllo/5829987225/in/photostream/
These shots should be viewed in full rez display. With "large" viewing and with the browser in full-screen mode. Only so, one image pixel is one monitor pixel.

Btw.: Why not optimizing for Medium Size Viewing? This would mean to interpolate the shots down to some rez with 640 pixels on the long side. Too small to see any optimiziation, I think. I did some experiments, trying to optimize for Medium Size Viewing, but there was almost no difference visible.
