I visited a new park (to me) here in Vancouver, BC yesterday. Queen Elizabeth Park is the highest point within the city limits of Vancouver and has so many incredibly beautiful trees that are booming with fall color right now. I was exploring the park for the first time and was looking for birds, specifically owls because I had heard barred owls like to hang out in the large trees here. I had no luck spotting owls in the forest so I moved along just walking the paths taking in all of the beautiful fall colors and song birds singing. I walked up a hill to check out a new area but it did not seem too promising when I got up to the top. So i turned around but had three options to choose from. Either the way I had come, or two new paths. I thought I would go back the way I had come in order to better access a different portion of the park. Man that was a good decision! I must have just walked past this Sharp Shinned Hawk in the forest on the way up. It was my first time coming across one of these guys, they are quite small and mainly prey on smaller song birds. It let me get fairly close and did not seem spooked at all. Eventually it got bored of me and took off right at me and flew over my head to land in a tree behind me where it started to try and find some dinner.

Sharp-lobed Hepatica (Anemone acutiloba). In contrast to the Round-lobed Hepatica (Anemone americana) that I typically see, in this species the leaflets are pointed instead of rounded. Furthermore, among the Anemone populations I've encountered in Georgia, acutiloba usually has pure white flowers, while americana has purplish flowers. My newest acquisition for 2011. This set exceeded my expectations in terms of overall performance. It has a 2SK3737 FET RF amp after its front end coils which accounts for its very high sensitivity on shortwave. Main IC is a TA2003, audio is a TDA2822M. Operates on AC or 3 "D" size batteries; in-built voltage regulator minimizes frequency drift on power supply fluctuations. The built-in speaker delivers very balanced sound with a bit of bass. This is one great, very well-engineered receiver.

Good day for the hawk ... bad day for the grosbeak. A harsh reality that plays out every day in the life of a wild creature. Out of nowhere this guy struck like lightning and I was lucky to manage one quick shot before it was off into the timber with its prey. My best guess is sharp-shinned but I'm no expert on these guys
As we entered Theodore Roosevelt NP early in the morning this fellow was nestled down on the cement sidewalk soaking up the early rays of sun.

The image was obtained on a lek on the Idaho-Utah border. The grouse danced under my truck which was my blind.
The mating routine of sharp-tailed grouse involves males displaying communally at a traditional site (one used year after year). This site is known as a “lek.” Males compete for mates by performing a ritualized dance in conjunction with calling (often a booming sound) and inflating purplish air sacs along their necks. Females approach the edge of the lek, observe and eventually select a dance participant to mate with.

Military Odyssey Show ~ Detling. Over 4,000 re-enactors and living history enthusiasts in attendence as well as over 250 stalls, Military Odyssey is the world''s largest multi-period re-enactment show with 3 seperate arenas in addition to the main battlefield, where battlefield re-enactments take place all weekend. With groups covering a vast period of global history, including Romans, Vikings, Medieval, the English Civil War, Napoleonic, the American Civil War, the Wild West, World Wars I & II, Vietnam right up to the present day.
Sharpness Docks at one time were thriving with ships off-loading. Nowadays they are fairly quiet, with perhaps three or four cargo vessels visiting each week.
From the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, view south into the floating dock at Sharpness, and the former North Docks Branch rail swing bridge at SO673028, now in use as a road bridge. Rails into the Docks and Sharpness opened 1875 to freight and a year later for passengers as far as Sharpness, from Berkeley Road by the Midland. With the opening of the line from Lydney, a new station opened at Sharpness in 1879, and the running powers were under the Joint Committee of the Severn and Wye and Severn Bridge Railway Company – docks traffic was provided by all three partners, GWR, MR and S+W.
