From the archives.

In the spring, sharp-tailed grouse form mating grounds, or leks, where they congregate to compete for territories and perform mating displays for visiting females. This crowded scene leads to fighting among the males as they attempt to outcompete one another and win the affections of the onlooking females.

There's something about the smell of newly sharpened pencils. It takes me back to kindergarten.

This is the front of a Photo Album which was probably made by Cecil Sharp following his visit to Winster on 4 July 1908.

This particular album is complete. It contains a display of six photographs (each 3" x 2") which have been mounted and glued down to expose the photograph. All of the photographs are reproduced in this Set.

Also elsewhere within this Set is another front album cover which was sent to F. Staton, East Bank. Unfortunately, Mr. Staton's album is incomplete. However, the photograph on the back of the two covers is identical.

It seems reasonable to infer that Sharp had a number of these Albums made up and that he may have sent them to various people in Winster. Two of the images from the Album pages have been reproduced in this Set to illustrate the double page layout.

Sharp (or his assistant) took many photographs during his visit and you can enjoy many examples here..

Sharp's visit has been well documented elsewhere but not on this site.

Some of his photographs have been published (before 1992) as modern postcards by the English Folk Dance & Song Society. Examples of some of these postcards are also included in this Set.
