Walking through the neighborhood this evening and my sharp eyed son spotted this sharp shin hawk. The hawk was not 10 feet up the tree and sat for a minute as I got off at least 10 shots.

💎 Winter Mood

⦁ Winter feels like a season of mood swings never deciding whether to be cruelly cold or gently warm. Some days are freezing, sharp enough to sting; others are merely chilly, almost comforting. Leaves fall from the trees, and everything turns white, like the moment when hope begins to fade. Yet within that loss, there is also a quiet promise a new beginning waiting patiently for the season to end, so the trees can grow their leaves again.

⦁ The wind blows so hard it feels as if the trees’ motivation is being torn apart, stripped bare by forces beyond their control. Still, the snow remains white and steady, like faith that refuses to disappear. When light touches the snow, it shines brighter than we ever expect, reminding us that even in the coldest moments, beauty survives.

⦁ Because at the end of every tunnel, there is always light. So never lose faith. Winter does not last forever, and the trees will grow new leaves again.

Was messing around with wall designs and ended up with this thing. Version of Quincy Sharp's office, not really based on anything specific.

Threw a bunch of stuff on his shelves that he's hoarded from his inmates. :)

Small as accipiters go, but high intensity — that encapsulates the identity of Sharp-shinned Hawk (a smaller relative of Cooper’s Hawk and American Goshawk [formerly called Northern Goshawk)]. This image from Carburn Park, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, shows some salient features of Sharp-shinned Hawk: those piercing eyes, the long talons, and a long banded tail (which enables navigating among trees in chase of prey, usually small songbirds).

Sharp-tailed grouse.

Recently we were invited to visit Manitoulin Island to see a sharp tailed grouse lek.

It was amazing. We were in a blind and the birds were about 10 feet away.

We saw about 40 birds, some down in the grass and a few more in the open. This one was at the road side as we were leaving.

Tympanuchus phasianellus

Scientists place Sharp-tailed Grouse in genus Tympanuchus, the prairie-chickens. The word means “drum nape” and refers to the purple air sacs (extensions of the esophagus) that displaying males inflate at the side of the neck. These sacs are not simply adornments. They amplify the male’s cooing courtship call and may help to show off his overall health.

The bird feeders have not been well-patronized lately as our local Sharpie has been keeping an eye on the activity. Amazingly, this bird perched only 25 feet away from me for 5 minutes and didn't seem to mind me so close.

They keep on building these sharp, tall objects down the coastline, blocking everyone's sun and the cool sea breeze.. What a shame.

Sharp as a tack HMM

ran out f time so looked through some photos taken in italy and though this was an odd flower - star shaped, sharp as tack because of the detail in the 'hairy' stars Macro Mondays HMM

Was outside today when i noticed something all puffed up in the neighbors cherry tree. an hour earlier i watched it chase a flock of sparrows into a bush. it looked like he was successful at the time.

i ran inside and attached the 300 f4 and 1.7X to the d300 and mounted it all to my tripod.

incredibly it allowed me to walk up to within about 30 feet from him before flying off.

in the original file there looks to be a blood spot on its lower breast where it blends to white.
