V-Shape - Red-shouldered Hawk launching before feeding on insects. I love this pose as it clearly shows the red shoulders that this species is named after. Often times it is difficult to see the red shoulders clearly when the bird is perched.

It was a special experience observing this bird feeding for around 2 hours by the coast. In over a decade of photography I have never had such an opportunity photograph an adult of this species up close as they usually tend to be quite skittish.

Species: Red-shouldered Hawk

Location: Northern California, CA USA

Equipment: Canon EOS R5 + EF 100-400mm IS II + EF 1.4x III Extender

Settings: 1/1600s, ISO: 2500, f/8 @560mm, Handheld, Electronic Shutter

…I was attracted to this uniquely shaped arch with window inset - I expect some serious extensions took place some time, quite possibly Henry Fox Talbot during his stay here? Have a great W/End folks, Alan:-)

A rather strange and unbalanced composition, but I like the odd shapes and colours

This was one of the many alternatives for the MM theme this week. Fallen lily stamen and petals make a fair bit of mess!

Thanks for stopping

I did look at Geometry shapes but still, I was hesitant :D

Memory warps time, as it does the sights and sounds and smells of reality; for what shapes it is emotion, which can twist what seems clear, just as the surface of a pond seems to bend the stick thrust into the water.

It's a cliché, I know, but light is everything, and how light falls and makes shadows is how we see shapes and their volume.

And it is something of an obsession with me, as it crosses over between photography and painting/drawing. So I have sessions where I just take a variety of shapes - mostly ones I've painted white - and photograph them with a variety of light sources and directions. It might be completely uninteresting to others, but I decided to raid one the folders from those lock-down months in 2020.

I also used them in a web page on my Photography website, called "Painting with Light" If you'd like to see yet more 😊
