built a controllable laser pointer!
it consits of a 5v laser module and two servo motors hold together by zip ties and is controlled trough a pololu serial 8-bit servo controller by some python code.
the laser module is simply switched trough the serial ports DTR line, that gives pulses as fast as the serial connection speed.
very unstable thing, but good enough to draw some crappy pictures on walls by taking long exposures (check the exif tags)!
its not easy to speed this thing up since you soon come to the point where you have to calculate the timing of your laser pulses with estimated servo speed and momentum. physics, basically, but i ran out of time to develop it really into someting. next try maybe with an arduino and some realtime assembler code..
I designed this laser cut kit of parts for assembling a scotch yoke, a mechanism for converting rotational motion into linear motion. I'm using it to control a physical camera based on the position of a virtual camera in an After Effects animation to achieve a match move. I got the gumball machine last week and he is this far now,,,,,, it looks like I will have him about right by the time dragon con gets here......look forward to it...hope to find other msties there as well
This service station at Rosebery, an inner Sydney southern suburb, dates from well back in the last century and was used for a parked taxi on 25 October 2009.

Het leuke van deze bediening is de kleinschaligheid ervan, alhoewel dit ook als een bedreiging gezien kan worden. Het ontbreken van de bovenleiding maakt de sfeer compleet. Op woensdag 19 januari is 6416 'Arie' de loc van dienst en passeert net buiten de bebouwde kom van Delden met de afvoertrein 46766 Delden Servo - Bad Bentheim. De trein bestaat uit een schattig twee-assertje en vier vier assers.
Building DIG's arms. He'll be asymmetrical as far as arms go. This is the left arm. The right arm will be a different design and, at this point, have a 3-point pincer hand.

Stepping back from this project, finally. Just need to take some decent photos for use in my feature article. I think this worked out well!
I hooked this up a while back to test controlling the servos and a fan at the same time from different power sources, at the moment you click to select which virtual servo it should mimic.
The next step is to build a mount for the new motor I have and attach it to the servo.
Once that's done and I'm relatively sure I have the components locked down it's time to order more servos and motors.

I mistakenly took the paper coating off the plexi before sending it to be cut which meant that the heat from the laser-evaporated plastic gas scarred the surface of the plexi.

A servo moves the indicator arm as the ultrasonic rangefinder detects things. It's accurate to within a centimeter at close range, and within 5cm at longer ranges.
It works up to 3m, but my wall is 2.73m away. In this shot, my hand is being found a few centimeters away.
I also have an IR rangefinder which is a bit more complicated to use because of the non-linear response, but I'm working on it!
