This is the emblem for America's National Park Service (NPS), a government agency responsible for many specific types of parks. The sign is on display at Mammoth Cave National Park, in west-central Kentucky. Mammoth Cave was established in 1941 and is the 26th national park in the system.
The NPS is in charge of the following types of units: national parks, national monuments, national lakeshores, national seashores, national preserves, national reserves, national rivers, national recreational rivers, national scenic rivers, national riverways, national wild rivers, national recreation areas, national historic sites, national historic parks, national historical reserves, national parkways, national battlefields, national battlefield parks, national battlefield sites, national military parks, national memorials, and national scenic trails (it's obvious that bureaucrats are in charge of these designations - lots of unnecessarily redundant labels).
The park service is not in charge of national forests, national grasslands, national resource lands, national wildlife refuges, or national volcanic monuments.
True national parks can only be established by the legislative branch of America's federal government (i.e., the Senate + the House of Representatives = "Congress"). The first national park in America was Yellowstone in Wyoming, back in 1872.
National parks are public land - they belong to everyone. But the park service has a contradictory mandate to provide access for the benefit of the people and for certain types of recreation, plus preserving scenery, nature, historic sites, and archaeological sites. Because of this, the park service denies access to many specific areas in quite a few national parks.
Over 120 countries have national parks and there are over 1,000 national parks in the world.
Problems in national parks include overcrowding and overuse, which are consequences of global human overpopulation (the # 1 environmental problem on Earth is not climate change - it's human overpopulation; the carrying capacity of Earth may be about 1 billion only). Chronically overcrowded parks in America include Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Yellowstone, and Mammoth Cave. Private vehicles are mostly prohibited in some parks due to overcrowding (e.g., Zion and Yosemite).
Other problems associated with national parks include development at & near park boundaries, poorly thought-out fire policies, poor visibility (air pollution), and vandalism.
Unlike national parks, national monuments can be established by the executive branch of America's federal government. The first national monument in America was Wyoming's Devils Tower, which was established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. Many true national parks were formerly national monuments.
Name changes and label changes have occurred with several NPS units. Some units no longer exist, like Fossil Cycad National Monument - vandals (scum) stole and/or wrecked all the fossils that were present.
Most national parks and national monuments are nature-based, but some are not.
