I went on business to the Hurricane Electric data center in Fremont, California. It is a big data center in the heart of the Silicon Valley. It has rows upon rows of server racks. I went there to get a physical backup of the TWiki.org server, which I moved to a server in the cloud.
I processed a photographic, a balanced, and a paintery HDR photos from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, added a TIE fighter, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, desaturated the image, and added some vignetting. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

I got a CMA (Cable Management Arm) with my server too, but unfortunately it didn't fit in my rack, I was so disappointed, and just look at that mess.
Update November, 15, 2011
Installed new Dell R510 server, labeled all the cables in the rack, added new KVM, and changed OS on LEVIATHAN.
R510 Specs:
Name: CynoGriffon
2 x Intel Xeon E5620 @ 2.4 GHz
24 GB of RAM
8 x 2TB Seagate HDDs totalling 16TB (10TB Usable with RAID-Z 2)
8GB USB Flash drive Running OS
OS: FreeNAS
The R510 is a beautiful server, by far my favorite.

Version 5 of the rack diagram.
This one includes some numbers about connections. As you can see, we can out of power sockets on the RS2 rack. This is because we failed to order enough sockets/PDU's.
I blame myself for not being more on top of what was being ordered, I assumed the person knew what he was doing.
As I cannot add any more stuff to that rack, I had to move hardware around a bit. I wanted to avoid cross-connected the power from one rack to the other.
I was not impressed by the amount of patch points the cable engineers provided us with, only 2 rows of 24 patches each, barely enough. Its constrained by the power socket issue though.
I ordered a rack-conversion kit for the IBM 3800 box, so I can take the wheels off and we don't need a shelf for it.
I ended up needing 2U worth of space above each KVM screen to accommodate all the cables belonging to both the HP 16 port KVM box, the foldout screen, and the Avocent 1020 (+adapter). If we had ordered the correct KVM box to begin with (with enthernet built in) I would have won back 2U.
All this messing with cables has me wondering how they do it with large high-density environments. I can hardly get enough spare free in these HP 10000 racks, for all the cables.
If, like us, you use redundant network and power, use KVM cables (with those little plug-devices attached) and also use 1 ethernet for ILO/RSA/DRAC , you are gonna get pressed for space down the sides.
If you where then to use 1U pizza boxes all down the rack, say the DL360G5, you would need mucho power, at least 4 PDU's I am guessing, and large socket boxes.
There is physically NOT ENOUGH ROOM in these HP10000 racks for all that.
An IBM Enterprise rack with extra 11 inches at each side? That would be oke... but these? No way. How do they do it?!

I have a part time job as a system administrator at my department. It's usually more software than hardware (except the occational toner cartridge replacement), but today I had some more physical work.
The scientific staff has got new UPSes, which means that the students get to inherit their old. So today I had to move some server rack brackets from one server rack to another, to make room for the new power backup. I didn't have time to finish during my office hours, so I will complete the move tomorrow. Also some rewiring will be required.

These are my plans for future expansion of my server rack, the first being my current setup (Sept, 13, 2011), the first step should happen within a month.
The arrows point the way, ate step 3 I don't know what direction I'm going to take (more space or additional server to replace the aging DL380) so it's a choose your own adventure.
In the last stage the servers are as follows (top to bottom):
Dell R310
Dell R310
Dell R510
Dell MD1200
HP DL380 G3 (have)
Supermicro custom (have)

It wasn't the best start today, as my trip to work was thwarted by Sheil Road being closed to traffic in both directions.
Not sure why, but the window cleaner apparently speculated that it was an RTC. It was open again when I came home.
When I got to work things picked up a lot, and today was all about the server room and the rack.
We've run out of space in our 42U cabinet, so we've augmented it with another cabinet that's exactly the same. We got the UPS installed into it but sadly it needs a 23A direct mains supply cabled to it, and that's a job for a spark.
A good day's work. Tomorrow starts with moving some printers.
