This sweet boy has been in the forefront of our thoughts the last couple of weeks. He has fought upper respiratory, digestive, and allergy issues off and on for his whole life (12yo), but has taken it all in stride. He thought we were losing him, though, last week when he stopped eating and became extremely lethargic. (You know it's bad when they turn down chicken baby food and tuna.) We have a fabulous vet, however, and she kept trying one thing and another--x-rays, bloodwork, steroids, antibiotics, fluids--but couldn't determine the cause. He had an ultrasound from a specialty clinic, but they didn't find anything either. Our vet gave me an appetite stimulant for him that works like gangbusters, and he now appears to be through whatever crisis it was. He's even batting around toys. We are very happy, because we were not prepared to lose him. He's such a sweet boy. The specialty clinic said he was purring throughout the ultrasound!

This tiny Powderpuff flower is all of 2 inches high. I got down on the gravelly street and tried to shoot it, but finally picked this one and held it up to the blue sky.
An amazing structure. A globe of straight shiny stamens, each ending in a yellow pollen dot. The stem is a bit fuzzy but straight and sturdy despite it's small size. An elegant weed indeed!
Sensitive Briar is a small, thorny, ground-growing vine that is sensitive at the slightest touch. It is found in clearings, open woods and roadsides throughout Florida.

Eleven days ago, on 13 April 2015, I was fortunate enough to witness around 24 or 25 Sharp-tailed Grouse displaying at their "lek" or communal dancing ground. On this particular day, five of us went to see this "secret" location on private property. Perhaps a trip of a lifetime!
We had to leave Calgary really early in order to be at the location before the Grouse arrived before sunrise, and we had to stay until they had all left, roughly three hours later. I had been so excited to get photos of this activity, but have to say that I was disappointed with the quality of all my shots, partly due to not the best light, heavily zoomed (Focal Length [35mm format] - 1200 mm), and also to the conditions under which they were taken. The grassy background really didn't help, lol. Still, needless to say, I am very happy to have had this chance and to get any photos at all! e(Towards the end of this mating ritual, a couple of the Grouse came closer to where we were and I managed to get a few closer photos of individuals, including this female (?).
The following 2:30 minute YouTube video by Alberta Conservation Association is very good for showing the action of these birds. Pretty amazing! The birds remind me of a child's wind-up toy : )
A few evenings ago, I came across an excellent brochure (pdf file) about Sharp-tailed Grouse on the Internet and will use some of the information from it, instead of using my own words to describe what goes on at a lek. I had seen females of this species before, on Christmas Bird Counts, but not a male.
"Sharp-tailed grouse perform spring courtship displays on communal “dancing grounds” called leks. Here, males compete for breeding opportunities by displaying their "dancing” ability to females. Most activity on the lek occurs in the early morning just before sunrise and for a few hours afterwards. The males’ energetic display includes fluttering wings, rapid foot stomping and spinning in tight circles - reminiscent of wind-up toys. The most dominant males court females with low cooing sounds and by strutting around them with inflated air sacs on their neck and fanned tail feathers. It is nearly a winner-take-all form of competition, as only a few of the males are selected as mates by the females.
Leks are found in areas with dry open ground, where dancing activity keeps the vegetation well-trampled. Leks are used over several weeks beginning in late March and are often used for years, even decades. They are an important part of sharp-tailed grouse life, and the loss of suitable lek habitat can be a limiting factor for sharp-tailed grouse in Alberta.
Male sharp-tailed grouse gather on the lek in late March. In April the females arrive, sparking increased displaying by the males. Peak attendance by females on the lek occurs between mid to late April in much of Alberta. Once they have selected a male, hens breed once and then seek out a place to nest, usually in late April to early May.
Leks are an integral part of the lifecycle of prairie grouse. Active leks should never be approached, as any disturbance to the birds may disrupt breeding activities and result in the abandonment of the lek. The locations of active and historical leks are of great interest to grouse biologists.
Native North Americans called the sharp-tailed grouse “Fire Bird” because of their reliance on fires to keep their habitat open in wooded areas. Suppression of natural fire in parkland and boreal areas reduces the amount of open grassland available to sharp-tailed grouse.
Sharp-tailed grouse were an important food source for native North Americans and they continue to be a popular game bird for hunters today.
In Alberta, the sharp-tailed grouse is listed as “Sensitive.”
While exact population numbers are not known, there is a feeling that sharp-tailed grouse have decreased significantly in numbers over the past 40 years. This trend is supported by lek counts, hunter surveys, aerial counts and Breeding Bird Survey data. Declining numbers are the result of a reduction in the quality and quantity of sharp-tailed grouse habitat, particularly the loss of quality nesting and brood-rearing habitat." My son in law and my daughter are going to build a small community here for people that are sensitive to EMF's, RF's, things like 5G antenas, Radio frequencies, Power stations, bluetooth, body electrical voltage and people with symptoms that tradicional medicine are still refusing to treat or diagnose in America.
At first I wasn't buying it, the kids came to my house, waved some magic wands, meters and recorded some high numbers.
They proceeded to tell me that the Spanish flu was caused by the introduction of electricity in 1918 and every time that man messes with the natural order of things, some tragedy happens, and I could relate to it by thinking that every time that man got out of space, something also happened to us, like a Tsunami, earthquake or the likes.
After their findings, they installed filters in every electrical outlet in my house to clear the dirty electricity from the wall, they got someone to install a electricity filter on or near my digital electric meter, they recommended that I hot wire my house for internet, they asked us to give up the Apple Watches, good bye to my beloved Alexas, amplifiers for my TVs, sound bars and subwoofers, they installed switches to cut the power to the TVs when we are not watching it, (smart TVs are always looking for the WiFi), they disconnected the power to my sleep by number beds, as a matter of a fact, they disconnected the switch from the electrical panel and now I don't have electricity at all in my bedroom so my body voltage at night is zero and the door to my microwave is tapped so it's not functional.
My exposure to my own Celular phone is kept to a minimal, yea, I got a land line as well, my house is almost EMF free.

The Carolina Wren is sensitive to cold weather. Since they do not migrate and stay in one territory the northern populations of Carolina Wrens decrease markedly after severe winters. Populations in Canada and the northern half of the United States experience regular crashes following severe winters, but their high breeding productivity soon results in a return to higher numbers. These birds are generally permanent residents throughout their range and defend their territory year round; some birds may wander north after the breeding season.
Male and female Carolina Wrens build their nests together. One member of the pair may stay at the site while the other gathers material. The first nest can take a week or more to build, but later ones take shape in as few as 4 days. The bulky nest is cup-shaped, usually domed, with a side entrance and often a woven extension like a porch or entrance ramp. It's loosely constructed of a great variety of materials such as bark strips, dried grasses, dead leaves, pine needles, hair, feathers, straw, shed snakeskin, paper, plastic, or string). The female lines the nest's inner bowl and may add nest material after incubation has begun. Nests may range from 3 to 9 inches long and 3 to 6 inches wide.
Carolina Wrens usually raise two broods in a season. The number of eggs is from five to six and are oval, greyish-white, sprinkled with reddish-brown. Incubation is performed by the female only and lasts anywhere from 12 - 14 days with the first young leaving the nest 12 - 14 days after hatching. Both the male and female feed the young. The young's plumage undergoes no change, merely becoming firmer in coloring.

Ficus benjamina is a tree reaching 30 m (98 feet) tall in natural conditions, with gracefully drooping branchlets and glossy leaves 6–13 cm (2+3⁄8–5+1⁄8 inches), oval with an acuminate tip. The bark is light gray and smooth. The bark of young branches is brownish. The widely spread, highly branching tree top often covers a diameter of 10 metres (33 ft). It is a relatively small-leaved fig. The changeable leaves are simple, entire and stalked. The petiole is 1 to 2.5 cm (3⁄8 to 1 inch) long. The young foliage is light green and slightly wavy, the older leaves are green and smooth; the leaf blade is ovate to ovate-lanceolate with wedge-shaped to broadly rounded base and ends with a short dropper tip. The pale glossy to dull leaf blade is 5 to 12 cm (2 to 4+1⁄2 inches) cm long and 2 to 6 cm (1 to 2+1⁄2 inches) wide. Near the leaf margins are yellow crystal cells ("cystolites"). The two membranous, deciduous stipules are not fused, lanceolate and 6 to 12 mm (1⁄4 to 1⁄2 inch) (rarely to 15 mm or 9⁄16 inch) long.[8]
F. benjamina is monoecious. The inflorescences are spherical to egg-shaped, shiny green, and have a diameter of 1.5 cm (1⁄2 inch). In the inflorescences are three types of flowers: male and fertile and sterile female flowers. The scattered, inflorescences, stalked, male flowers have free sepals and a stamen. Many fertile female flowers are sessile and have three or four sepals and an egg-shaped ovary. The more or less lateral style ends in an enlarged scar.[citation needed]
The ripe figs (collective fruit) are orange-red and have a diameter of 2.0 to 2.5 cm (3⁄4 to 1 inch).[citation needed]
The tree is treated as an ornamental bush and indoor plant in many places. But it is one of the best shade trees. It can grow to enormous size. Its capability of carbon sequestration is also good.[citation needed]
Cultivation
In tropical, subtropical and warm temperate latitudes, the weeping fig makes a very large and stately tree for parks and other urban situations, such as wide roads. It is often cultivated for this purpose, such as in Bourbong Street Weeping Figs in Bundaberg, where it is heritage listed.
F. benjamina is a very popular houseplant in temperate areas because of its elegant growth and tolerance of poor growing conditions; it does best in bright, sunny conditions, but it also tolerates considerable shade. It requires a moderate amount of watering in summer and only enough to keep it from drying out in the winter. Longer days, rather high daytime and moderate night-time temperatures constitute favourable conditions for appreciable growth in a short time. It does not need to be misted. The plant is sensitive to cold and should be protected from strong drafts. When grown indoors, it can grow too large for its location and may need drastic pruning or replacing. F. benjamina has been shown to effectively remove gaseous formaldehyde from indoor air.[9]
The fruit is edible, but the plant is not usually grown for its fruit. The leaves are very sensitive to small changes in light. When it is turned around or relocated, it reacts by dropping many of its leaves and replacing them with new leaves adapted to the new light intensity. The Full-sun Ultraviolet Rocket SpecTrograph (FURST) aims to study the "Sun as a star" when it launches aboard a Black Brant IX sounding rocket on Aug. 11 at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
FURST will obtain the first high-resolution spectra of the Sun in vacuum ultraviolet. Astronomers have studied other stars in the vacuum ultraviolet with orbiting telescopes, however, these instruments are too sensitive to be pointed to the Sun. FURST will be the third launch led by Marshall for NASA’s Sounding Rocket Program within five months, making 2024 an active year for the program.
The launch will be livestreamed on Sunday, Aug. 11, with a launch window of 11:40 a.m.– 12:40 p.m. CDT. Tune in on NASA’s White Sands Test Facility Launch Channel.
