I had every intention of travelling to Salisbury Plain this evening to find a poppy field, but then I got a last minute tip off about this field, which saved me quite a considerable journey! The field looked great, and the light just got better and better, a magical evening. I even saw a badger rustling through the poppies, but I couldn't photograph him in time.

Letter on front and reverse penned on 18th December 1914 and addressed to a Herr Randolf Doll in Steinsfurt. Postage cancelled a day later.

I tried to mimic layers of patterned paper. It seemed like it should be simple... but took me a lot longer and was a more painful endeavor than I care to admit (and I learned some lessons along the way, haha), but here it is. Finished card measures 5"x5" square (or 12.7cm square). Thanks for looking!

*Edit: For those of you interested, here is how I made the card:
1. Using large post-it notes (the wide kind), I masked off the center portion to stamp the heart flourish first.
2. Then I used two post-its to mask off a thin strip on the top for the houndstooth, brayered it in light blue, then stamped with houndstooth. I repeated this for the bottom strip.
3. I masked off the top and bottom edges of the card so I could brayer the brown center strip --- and good thing I noticed, I almost brayered the entire strip in brown before I realized I still had to mask off the center scallop for the sentiment! *phew* So after brayering, then I stamped the raindrop background & embossed in white.
4. I stamped two hearts in the center, and the sentiment over it.
5. I cut out portions of the scallop edges to slide the ribbon through & added buttons.
A couple things I learned:
1. When using a brayer (e.g. making the brown center), I should wait next time to make sure the ink is entirely dry if I'm going to emboss anything over it. Even though I used dye ink, rolling over it several times with ink probably made it more moist than usual, so when I sprinkled embossing powder over the polka dots, they were clinging all over! yikes.
2. When using a mask for my center scallop, I should have used a post-it note. I was a little lazy & instead used the scrap piece of recycled printer paper I was playing around with (meaning, it was already printed on the back side), and even though I used a glue pen (dried) for "temporary adhesive", rolling over it with a brayer several times isn't going to be great! It stuck a little, and also left a little black imprint in one spot where there was text on the back side. hahaha. Thankfully, I was able to erase it or cover it up with buttons. :P Thanks for reading this LONG explanation!

Most Wednesdays, the UP sends a local over to Rockford, IL, from Belvidere. In addition to customers in the lovely downtown area, the train services the former Kenosha District, or KD line, which only goes as far as Loves Park these days to Rock Valley Oil & Chemical at Windsor Road. But nearby Cimco Resources, via a spur beginning at Riverside Boulevard, also recently started receiving carloads of scrap steel, doubling the number of customers on the KD line. On 3-30-16, the local delivered a couple loads and pulled this empty gondola away from the plant, maneuvering in the parkway trackage along Material Ave.
