Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Ma Songs are inhabited by the Spirits during the Vegetarian Festival every year. The act of self mutilation is done in the belief it will bring good luck to them and their families. It is the Ma Song's choice as to what object they will pierce their cheeks with. Actions such as tongue piercing, self cutting, and facial piercings in general are all pretty common from my experience. Apparently the spirits keep the ma song from bleeding profusely and supposedly it doesn't hurt them. Truly an amazing thing to witness first hand.

This picture is meant to send the message of how real cutting and depression are in todays youth. I no longer struggle with any of those. Praise be to my Lord Jesus Christ. Alone.

I'm sorry I let myself go. And I'm sorry I let you down.

I never meant it.

Just let me be alone; I deserve it.

Helping IuliPhotography this week, and I was inspired by the atmosphere of this abandoned insane asylum. I am happy to have been able to get a chance to make some photos and collaborate. More will come. A big thanks Iuli !

Artist Statement:

Women are constantly objectified for their bodies in photographs.

I know that being apart of "this" world, I have to accept that objectification is sometimes glorified. Some women would even argue that it is empowering. But whether you agree or disagree, the significance behind my pose with this chain is to exhibit how we are sometimes our own worst enemy. It is not meant to be seen as pornographic, but artful.

One of the main messages I represent is that: We are the keepers of our own freedom, from labels, stereotypes, and other judgments. And yet, at times it can be a struggle.

I’ve incorporated a long chain that wraps around my neck and ankle, to show the inner struggle I personally feel. The ends of the chain are not held by anyone, and although I’m not physically holding either end, this represents how these specific negative point of views are only thoughts and opinions that I confine myself to. If only I choose to give little importance to these thoughts, then may I be truly free to accept the fact that I am beautiful the way I am, despite all the ways one person can say otherwise.

I wanted to keep a gentle face without any sexual tension in body language or eyes. In my mind I was thinking of all the things that I am disgusted and saddened by when it comes to the media, the modeling world, etc, which can have us thinking negatively about ourselves and even, each other. This pose could be taken as suggestive, but I hope you will be able to see the innocence and strength of the composition of my body. And in a way, it is meant to be hypocritical, to evoke you to think all of those nasty thoughts that make me cringe and hate myself for.

Will Not Be (Tamed) :: The title is written like this because to me, I tell myself I can't be swayed one way or the other, however it may be just that--that I allow myself to become apart of the phenomenon which I resent. Which is why "Tamed" is within its own restraint, because it is a muted secret but boldly noticeable.

Took this photo because I felt sad about this young lady on the bus. If someone you love is cutting themselves there is a problem. Your family doctor can recommend someone to help them. Please don't hurt yourself.

WAMENA, INDONESIA - OCTOBER 10: Women of the traditional, Dani tribe, from Lembah Baliem show their amputated fingers on October 10, 2009 in Wamena, West Papua, Indonesia. The primitive tribe still live a very traditional existence due to the remoteness of their location, only reachable by plane. Situated at an altitude of 1,600m in the heart of the Cyclops Mountains, Wamena is the only town in the valley though it is estimated that 250,000 Dani live in the region, with the valley having one of the highest densities of population in Papua Province. The tribe were once famed as a head-hunting tribe and still demonstrate specific customs today, including the women cutting off segments of their fingers whenever a relative dies. THEME: Self mutilation + Depression.

Once on a yellow sheet of paper with green lines, he wrote a poem.

& He called it "Chops", because that was the name of his dog.

& That was what it was all about.

& His teacher gave him an "A", & a gold star.

& His mother hung it on the kitchen door & read it to his aunts.

This was the year that Father Tracy took everyone to the Zoo, & he let them sing on the bus.

& His little sister was born, with tiny toe nails & no hair.

& His mother & father kissed a lot.

& The girl around the corner sent him a Valentine, signed with a row of X's, & he had to ask his father what the X's meant.

& His father always tucked him in bed at night, & was always there to do it

Once on a peice of white paper with blue lines, he wrote a poem.

& He called it "Autumn", because that was the name of the season. & That's all that it was about.

& His teacher gave him an "A", & asked him to write more clearly.

& His mother never hung it on the kitchen door, because of the new paint.

& The kids told him that Father Tracy smoked cigars, & left butts on the pews. & Sometimes they would burn holes.

& The girl around the corner laughed when he asked her to go see Santa Clause.

& the kids told him why his mother & father kissed a lot.

& His father never tucked him at night. & His father got mad, when he cried for him to do it.

On a paper torn from this notebook he wrote a poem.

& He called it "Innocence: A Question",

because that was the question about his girl.

& That's all that it was about.

& His professor gave him an "A", & gave him a strange steady look.

& His mother never hung it on the kitchen door because he never showed her.

That was the year that Father Tracy died, & he forgot how the end of "Apostle's Creed' went.

& He caught his sister making out on the back porch.

& His mother & father never kissed, or even talked...

& the girl around the corner wore too much makeup.

That made him cough when he kissed her, but he kissed her anyway... because that was the thing to do.

& at three A.M, he tucked himself into bed, his father snoring loudly.

That's why on the back of a brown paper bag, he tried another poem...

& He called it "Absolutely Nothing".

Because that's what it was really all about.

& HE GAVE HIMSELF AN A,

& A SLASH ON EACH DAMNED WRIST,

& he hung it on the bathroom door,

because this time,

he didn't think that he could reach the kitchen...

The Vegetarian Festival is celebrated in the month of October all over Thailand, but mostly in Phuket. The festival is also known as the “Tesagan Gin Je” or the “Nine Emperor Gods Festival”. This festival is filled with tradition and excitement. Most of the people taking part in the festival are of Chinese heritage, 30% of the population in Thailand. The festival started in 1825 when a Chinese circus act came to town and a sickness broke out amongst the artists. They healed themselves by following a strict vegetarian diet. These days the festival is a VERY exciting event full of surprises and amazing photo opportunities. If you haven’t experienced something like this before, brace yourself…….

Story: "Cutting was my release. When my parents would fight, blame me for everything that was wrong with our family. When my boyfriend would verbally abuse me. When my friends stabbed me in the back. When I would get bullied in school. When I felt like I had nothing else good going for me. Everywhere I looked something bad would happen in my life. The mirror even hated what it saw. The razor became my best friend, my only friend. It was the only thing that never judged me, never yelled at me, never made me hate myself. I felt so free from everything when I cut, I was numb, I can't explain it. I would only cut when I was depressed which was 98% of the time, it became an obsession. I would cut in the high school bathrooms, my bedroom etc (the rubber band trick is a joke). I always wore long sleeved shirts so it was never addressed to anyone's attention. Finally my time was up, my mother walked in on me when I was out of the shower drying off and saw my arms, legs, she started yelling and screaming..."what the fuck is wrong with you?! didn't we raise you better than that? How could you?" I was forced to see a psychiatrist which led to unanswered questions and antidepressants which didn't help at all because I refused to take them, I wanted to get better on my own and I learned the hard way. I cut myself for the last time on July 16th 2011, I slit my wrist so deep that I was gushing blood and passed out almost immediately, my mother heard me fall upstairs in the bathroom and that's all I really remember. I woke up in the hospital with my parents sitting around me crying. I was hurting those that I love, something I didn't want or plan on doing. I had to stop. I wanted to stop. I nearly died! I didn't wanna kill myself. I would never want my parents to find me dead.. I finally asked for help, I went and got treatment. It helped me tremendously. I opened up and finally spoke up, definitely the best feeling in the world. Cutting was no longer a release for me when I started hurting others. I'm not perfect but I'm working on not hating myself, I'm told it gets better...I feel better now, thank you". - Anonymous

Day 255: So this is me beating myself up, as usual. I think we're all terribly good at it, unfortunately...if I said half the things I say to myself to other people, I'd have no friends at all lol Anyway, hope you like this one...it was actually pretty easy to do.

I believe Ms. Meredith has a similar shot of herself in her stream somewhere...I wasn't trying to copy cat, but I think it's pretty darn similar nonetheless. Anyway, you should definitely check out her stream if you've been living under a rock and don't know who she is :)

"So if you wanna burn yourself, remember that I love you.

And if you wanna cut yourself, remember that I love you.

And if you wanna kill yourself, remember that I love you.

Call me up before you're dead, we can make some plans instead.

Send me an IM, I'll be your friend."

Loose Lips - Kimya Dawson

When I first heard these lyrics I thought they were just belittling a very serious issue, but after rethinking it, I see it as simplifying the solution: no matter how many people seem to not care, there is always someone who does. Whether it's a parent, a sibling, the guy at the bookstore, a counselor, a priest, a message board poster, an uncle, the kid you babysit, or your dog - there is always someone who loves you and wants you to live. Don't give up.
