Our chair is called 'The Seat of Selfless Heroes'
What our chair means to us:
Here is our chair - fit for an everyday hero. We are proud to say that everyone in Year 6 has contributed to its design and creation. When we were given the brief to design a chair for 'an everyday hero' we initially started to think about the heroes in our community. We came up with the National Health Service, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Army, the Police, the Air Ambulance and charities such as the Salvation Army, Crisis and Shelter. As many of us have parents or family working for these organisations, we felt it was important to represent them as the selfless work they do for our communities on a daily basis, is essential and can change lives. Each spindle has been painted according to the colours of each organisation: the Police - the spindle has been painted blue and yellow; the Army - green and brown to represent camouflage; blue and white for the NHS; read and white - to represent the Salvation Army, Fire Service, Crisis and Shelter; orange and black - for the RNLI; Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is green and yellow.
We were inspired by Jesus' words, 'I am the Vines, you are the branches, If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.' The legs of our chair are like the trunk of a tree - supporting and giving the strong foundation - just like those who remain strong for others and give up their time to care. Then the vine connects and wraps around the chair - showing that everyday heroes all connect in a similar way - there to support and bring light to others. Everyday heroes walk in Jesus' steps and selflessly give their time for the good of other people. Finally, the seat has been covered in beautiful flowers and leaves made by Year 6 to reflect the natural world. Around the back of the chair, the words from the Galatians taken form the Bible are inscribed on it. It states, 'And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.' Inspiring words for us all to live by.

Hans Nielsen (1911-1965) was a German actor and assistant director. He was known for such films as Titanic (1943), Nachtwache/Keepers of the Night (1949) and Town Without Pity (1961). He appeared in more than 130 films between 1937 and 1965
Hans Albert Nielsen was born on 30 November 1911 as the son of a merchant in Hamburg, Germany. After attending secondary school he took an apprenticeship as a merchant,. He only completed it for the sake of his parents, because he took acting lessons with Albrecht Schoenhals and Erich Ziegel and also trained in singing. In 1932, Nielsen made his theatre debut at the Hamburger Kammerspiele. Further engagements took him to Augsburg, Kiel and Leipzig in the following months. Many actors and performing artists fled Nazi Germany, but Nielsen remained. In 1938, Nielsen went to Berlin and performed at various theatres. The talented actor had already attracted the attention of the film industry in the mid-1930s and Nielsen made his screen debut with a small part in the romantic comedy Daphne und der Diplomat/Daphne and the Diplomat (Robert A. Stemmle, 1937) in the same year he appeared as pilot Billy Sefton in the melodrama Tango Notturno (Fritz Kirchhoff, 1937). A year later, he took on the role of Max von Wendlowsky in the Zarah Leander film Heimat (Carl Froelich, 1938), based on the play by Hermann Sudermann. Productions such as the initially banned historical drama Preußische Liebesgeschichte/A Prussian Love Story (Paul Martin, 1938), the adventure Aufruhr in Damaskus/Uproar in Damascus (Gustacv Ucicky, 1939), and the crime thriller Alarm auf Station III/Alarm at Station III (Philipp Lothar Mayring, 1939) followed until the end of the 1930s. In the 1940s, Nielsen appeared in the euthanasia drama Ich klage an/I Accuse (Wolfgang Liebeneiner, 1941) as Dr Höfer, which is still considered a ”reserved film’ today. In the drama Titanic (Herbert Selpin, 1943) about the sinking of the luxury liner RMS Titanic in 1912, Nielsen played the German first officer Petersen. Titanic was commissioned by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels with the intent of showing not only the superiority of German filmmaking but also as a propaganda vehicle which would depict British and American capitalism as being responsible for the disaster. The addition of an entirely fictional heroic German officer, Petersen, to the ship's crew, was intended to demonstrate the superior bravery and selflessness of German men as compared to the British officers. The film's original director, Herbert Selpin, was arrested during production after making disparaging comments about the German army and the war in the East. He was found hanged in prison, and the film was completed by Werner Klingler, who was not credited. Although the film had a brief theatrical run in parts of German-occupied Europe starting in November 1943, it was not shown within Germany by order of Goebbels, who feared that it would weaken the German citizenry's morale instead of improving it, as heavy Allied bombing raids made a film depicting mass panic and death unappealing. Goebbels later banned the playing of the film entirely, and it did not have a second run. Until the end of the war, Nielsen appeared in productions including the drama Der große König/The Great King (Veit Harlan, 1942) starring Otto Gebühr. The comedy Dr. Phil. Döderlein (1945) remained unfinished.
After the end of the Second World War, Hans Nielsen was able to continue his earlier successes on the big screen with mostly high-profile supporting roles, but also leading roles. He appeared, for example, as King Peter Petroni in the comedy of mistaken identity Herzkönig/King of Hearts (Helmut Weiss, 1947) and as Wolfgang Grunelius in the episodic film In jenen Tagen/In Those Days (1947) directed by Helmuth Käutner. It was one of the Rubble films made in the wake of Germany's defeat during World War II. In 1949, he shone alongside Luise Ullrich and Dieter Borsche in the drama Nachtwache/Keepers of the Night (Harald Braun, 1949). He impressively portrayed the pastor Johannes Heger, who finds himself in a conflict of conscience. In 1950, he was seen in the role of chief inspector Thomsen in Kurt Hoffmann's crime thriller Fünf unter Verdacht/Five Suspects (1950), based on the novel ‘Thomas verhört die Prima’ by Herbert Moll and Rudolf Becker. He often played good-natured, likeable and elegant roles, like the presiding judge in the satire Hokuspokus/Hocuspocus (Kurt Hoffmann, 1953). He usually appeared older in his roles than he was, often playing the benevolent head of the family. However, many of the productions in which Nielsen appeared were successful not least because of him. In the criminal melodrama Teufel in Seide/Devil in Silk (Rolf Hansen, 1955) with Lilli Palmer and Curd Jürgens, he was the committed defence lawyer, as well as in the legal drama Gestehen Sie, Dr. Corda!/Confess, Doctor Corda! (Josef von Báky, 1958) with Hardy Krüger and Kriegsgericht/Court Martial (Kurt Meisel, 1959), based on the story ‘Kreuzer Pommern’ by Willi Berthold with Karlheinz Böhm, Christian Wolff and Klaus Kammer as three shipwrecked German marines. In Wolfgang Liebeneiner's romanticised historical film Königin Luise/Queen Luise (1957), he lent character to Minister Karl August von Hardenberg alongside Ruth Leuwerik as Queen Luise. His role as Max Mertens in Anders als du und ich/Different from You and Me (Veit Harlan, 1957) is rather negligible. As Filmdienst.de notes: ‘The film by no means sees homosexuality as a positive alternative to life, and also defames abstract painting and atonal music, which it portrays as the expression of such an ‘attitude to life’.’ Nielsen did not become a real screen star in German post-war films, probably because he was confined to the type of dignified grand seigneur, the ‘actor of sober businessmen and grumpy but spirited clergymen’, as one critic once described him.
Hans Nielsen founded a cabaret group, ‘Die Außenseiter’ (The Outsider) after the war, and appeared in revues by Günter Neumann. Engagements took him to the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the Renaissance Theatre and the Theater am Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, among others. One of his most important theatre roles was that of the Cardinal in the 1963 premiere of Rolf Hochhuth's play ‘Der Stellvertreter’, directed by Erwin Piscator at Berlin's Theater am Kurfürstendamm, with Dieter Borsche as Pope Pius XII. During the 1960s, he also appeared in films like Sherlock Holmes und das Halsband des Todes/Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace (Terence Fisher, 1963) with Christopher Lee, Scotland Yard jagt Dr. Mabuse/Scotland Yard Hunts Dr. Mabuse or Scotland Yard vs. Dr Mabuse (Paul May, 1963) starring Peter van Eyck, and Das indische Touch/The Indian Scarf (Alfred Vohrer, 1963). His only Hollywood film was Town Without Pity (Gottfried Reinhardt, 1961) with Kirk Douglas. In addition to his extensive acting work for theatre and film, Hans Nielsen was also a sought-after dubbing actor. He was the German voice of Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, Trevor Howard, James Stewart, Fred Astaire and Spencer Tracy. His final film was the Western Die Hölle von Manitoba/The Hell of Manitoba (Sheldon Reynolds, 1965) starring Lex Barker and Pierre Brice. Hans Nielsen died in 1965 in West Berlin at the age of just 53. He had previously been admitted to hospital with back problems and was diagnosed with leukaemia on examination. The popular act or was laid to rest in the Heerstraße Cemetery in the Berlin district of Westend. The actor had been married to Anna Katharina Elisabeth Novian since 1937; despite having a daughter together, the marriage failed. After the divorce, Nielsen married his second wife Annemarie Giersch, who brought a son into the marriage. Wife number 3 was Jutta Jusseit. The couple married a few months before his death in 1965. In 2023, film historian Thomas Barthol published a biography of the artist entitled ‘Hans Nielsen: Der charmante Kavalier’, who never played in the top league of film stars, but ‘knew how to convince with his acting and vocal skills’.

Seva an act of performing selfless service is an important aspect of the sikh religion. Devotees engage in this free service in Gurudwaras washing vessels, cleaning floors, polishing shoes of the other devotees etc. Some volunteer to work in local hospitals, community centers etc to help the community.The person performing this service is called a Sevadar. 8 Ways to Raise Kids to Have Exceptional Character

To raise kids with exceptional character, we must allow them the space to be human. We must support them to go through the normal phases of development where they naturally fluctuate between selfishness and selflessness. We need to give them room to grow and refrain from being obsessive over every single move they make, every friendship or love interest they have, so as to allow their life experiences to help shape them. When children feel loved, supported and believed in they develop good character. When they feel trapped, micromanaged, judged, criticized, ignored, bullied and pressured they live from insecurity.
Our children learn to love themselves by how we love them.
1. Person over performance.
The most significant contribution we give our children is raising them to trust they are loved for who they are, not for what they do or how well they perform. They should not feel as if they have to consistently audition for parental love and approval. We need to validate them as worthy even when they’ve made mistakes, and show them, that although we may be disappointed, it doesn’t impact our love for them. When we love our children in this way, they learn to love themselves. When children have developed a strong and genuine love for themselves at their baseline they develop into gracious losers and humble winners.
Our kids are not going to be great at everything. Each will have their own inherent strengths and weaknesses. We must raise them to trust their hard work will trump both genius and talent in the long-term. If our kids don’t get the results we or they wanted, but they tried their absolute best, we must have as much pride in them for getting last place as if they had gotten first place. If they gave their best effort, we must parent their effort as the win. This is not to say all kids deserve trophy’s for trying because I believe in the value of rewarding those who earn the win on all levels, but we should not lose pride in our own kids because they didn’t get the trophy.
4. Character over grades.
Getting good grades is important because it gives children something to strive for, it puts a goal with an end result in their future and teaches them to organize their social lives, responsibilities and time. In reality, school is easier for some than others. There is nothing about having perfect marks that makes one kid better than another. What separates good kids from bad kids is not grades, but their character. It is better to have a child who works hard to get average grades, but who is kind, responsible, thoughtful, helpful and loving than it is to have a kid who gets perfect marks, but who is an overvalued, entitled person who boasts about being better than everyone else. What matters, underneath grades, is that we parent our children to put responsibilities before leisure.
5. Quality over quantity.
Entitlement is one of the biggest problems in youth today. They have too much, are not required to earn it, have no concern for others, talk down parents, and feel as if they should have what they want when they want it, regardless of how others feel about it. We must teach our children the value of less is more. Loud, bragging, bullish kids are repulsive by all standards. We want to raise children to earn rewards in a hierarchy so as to build their character. In other words, we don’t want their first car to be a BMW. If that is their first car, for the next car to make them feel happy, it will have to be an even nicer one. It’s best to start small and grow rewards in proportion to their needs and maturity.
Beauty is one thing, but it’s not everything. In our image-obsessed society there is a pressure to be ultra- thin, super muscular, to have the right image, the right clothes, the right car, and the right peer group. We must refrain from building our kids into “billboards” that can keep up with Jones’s. We want to raise our children to value who they are internally. We must acknowledge that it is their kindness, their confidence, their self-assuredness, hard-working, responsible, giving, humble and mature nature that makes them beautiful.
7. Self-respect over popularity
When we treat our children with respect, they learn to respect themselves. We must raise our children to know their boundaries so they have an idea of where they stop and others start. Knowing boundaries helps them maintain their individuality under social pressures. Their Yes must be a Yes and their No a No. This means we also need to respect their differences from us. We must encourage our children to stand for themselves even if means losing something. When we raise our children to be perfect and popular, are overly invasive and meddling in their lives, we raise kids who are in danger of losing themselves. Our kids become less concerned about who they are in any given situation because they’re more caught up in trying to figure out who they need to be, or what they need to do to maintain a certain status, image or appearance.
8. Collaboration over competition.
When competition or Being The Best is overvalued, it’s destructive. Just because a kid may be performing well, doesn’t mean they are happy or have it all together. They may be performing well out of the fear of losing support, freedoms or acceptance. The last thing parents should do is compare one sibling to another, labeling one as “easy” and the other “difficult.” The creates a golden child vs. scapegoat dynamic, keeping siblings from ever being able to genuinely connect with each other. For children to be healthy, parents have to be on their team, show tremendous flexibility and create an environment where love and the acceptance of differences override competition and fear-based, cruel comparison tactics to push their kids to succeed. We must raise our children to be who they are and to support each child as having a unique and valuable purpose. Our children must know they are one of a kind; that there is no comparison.

Alan's nomination storyinspirational guy selfless gives all they can without a thought truly an inspiration to every day people gymforheroes team member :)I have always enjoyed sport as I was brought up as a forces child and continued this in my 24 year military career. I set up Gym for Heroes as a National event to raise £1m for Help for Heroes and in the first year we raised £103k for the cause. We have just completed or second year and are yet to find out how much we have raised. I push myself to my limits and hope that others will follow my lead; this year during a 24hr non-stop challenge (8hrs row -8hrs bike -8hrs run) I covered a distance of 401km which will now be the target distance for next year. The challenge will continue until we have reached our target (I have Sophie and Sally who volunteered to run the site with me). I have be asked to do the Marathon Des Sables next year
I am no great altruist, though some mistake me for one. With only the rarest exceptions, humans won't act with no expected return, and I'm certainly no selfless saint. We all want a thing in return – maybe money, food and shelter, payment in kind. If we deny ourselves all those, we might earn recognition, respect, and love. If we go one step further and act with total anonymity, we can still gain self-gratification, or approval from the god of our choosing. There is rarely output without return, and we do ourselves no good imagining there should be. Don't get me wrong – I want to be useful. I get no joy from offering nothing to no one, locked away and living for myself alone. That was my biggest frustration as a child, trying to believe that endless play was good enough. So when you see me uncovering cemeteries and unearthing stones, putting hours and days of effort in, I'm only doing it because my audience supports it. I work for them, and could never justify the effort without it. I'm not volunteering, it's not a hobby, this is my method to survive.
I was raised around a lot of religious talk, from folks who genuinely believed in self-sacrifice. I accept the theory, but severely doubt the practice. It's one in a million that we'll choose the hard ask, and half of those who do are bitter for it. Organ donators cast aside by their recipients, charity regret, realizing that they really wanted equality in the end. I've learned that we love because we want love, we practice for payment, work for wages. We make ourselves of value with the goal of being valued in return. I live with that philosophy in mind, every day, trying to put out an equal amount for what I need back. Of course, I'm lucky to love what I do. That love takes back some sting of desperation, keeps me going good on the bad days. If you're ever tempted to believe I'm better than I am, just remember what you read here. I am equal to my action only, and I thank you for helping me act.

The North Carolina Museum of Art has a large display of sculptures of French artist Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). This is my favorite. When I was there, the late afternoon sun coming in made every photo almost impossible. Neither the color nor the black and white convey the full impact of this masterful depiction of anguish. I never realized how much emotion can be conveyed in bronze. This viewing experience has enhanced appreciation of sculpture in general and of Rodin in specific.
Edward III, King of England, claimed authority over France at that time. In 1346 he began an 11-month siege of the port city of Calais in an early battle in the Hundred Years’ War. Unable to take the city by attack, Edward decided to starve the city into submission. His plan succeeded. He would spare the lives of the citizens of Calais if six of its prominent leaders would come to his encampment; they would be barefoot and without headwear, nooses around their neck, and hand over the keys to the city and beg for mercy. Six burghers ultimately volunteered in this act of selfless heroism. They expected to be executed but were saved through the intervention of England’s pregnant queen, Philippa of Hainault. She feared the killing of the burghers would be a bad omen for the birth of her child. Pierre de Wissant is one of those six burghers.
To honor this act of self-sacrifice, the city of Calais commissioned Rodin in 1885 to execute a monument. His finished work was The Burghers of Calais (Les Bourgeois de Calais). Rodin used the head of Pierre de Wissant alone in a larger-than life sculpture. The modeling of the head was done in 1884-1885 and enlarged in 1909. The figure in the North Carolina Museum of Art was cast in 1980 by the Musée Rodin.
The bust shows Pierre de Wissant with parted lips, eyes nearly shut, head leaning slightly to the side, and an elongated neck—all features contributing to the pathos of the situation of self-denial and sacrifice. His features reveal the emaciation resulting from the effort to starve out the city. His decision shows in the facial agony to sacrifice his life for his fellow citizens. Rodin remarkably creates a human being in flesh and blood using only bronze.

Bacon Day dress for my sister, 1Canoe2 Pigs in Navy. I couldn't be more of a fan of this cotton for garment making. I recommend it highly for a fluffy skirt because it makes you feel encased is silky cotton. It presses crisp, but easily falls into that vintage shirt voile feeling but with more substance.

Smith Theater on Schofield Barracks. The hosts for the event were Col. David B. Womack and Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey D. Sweezer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team command team. On behalf of the 2nd Bde. Combat Team and the 25th Inf. Div. we would like to say thank you for your wonderful service and a job well done.

Sergeant Major of the Army Kenneth O. Preston retired after 35 years of selfless service from the United States Army at Fort Myer March 1. Preston served as the Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey Jr.’s personal adviser on all enlisted-related matters, particularly in areas affecting Soldier training and quality of life. People come here to feed pigeons spending time and money, a selfless expression of care and love. Peace will prevail in Pakistan.
A father selflessly becomes the pillar of his children's dreams, often losing and forgetting his own luster and color as years wear on. Like a gray vintage bus in a garage of garish cars, he remains always reliable, ever strong. Today is his day. Make him feel special.
I lost my dad 14 years ago this September. If there is one person who can define dedication to family, then his life is one shining illustration. Happy Father's Day to all fathers, grandfathers, godfathers and fathers at heart!

Base Commander Rebecca Morrison, aka "The Valkyrie", a femme fatale officer of the Corps who also happens to be fresh out of the IOAC Combat Academy. It is obvious to her subordinates that she is new at this, but her determination and enthusiasm more than make up for it.
Lieutenant Cody Scarr, aka "Scarface', is a young but experienced soldier who lived through both the catastrophic crash of the U.S.S. Blazing Phoenix and the epic War of Mars, and who comes at any situation with a smile on his face and dogged pessimism in his heart. He is usually the one who keeps other, less experienced soldiers grounded.
Commander James Van Helm, aka "Cyborg", is an older, wiser warrior, who is a veteran of the Great Middle Eastern War. That service, however, cost him an arm and a leg in the most literal sense, after he saved two soldiers from being blown to Kingdom Come by a grenade. The families of those soldiers were so grateful for his sacrifice, however, that they paid for his medical care and his cybernetic prosthesis, which allowed him to continue service in the Corps. He now has a bit more respect for the so-called 'Noob Tubes', however.

About The Campaign

Veterans Day, historically known as Armistice Day and officially recognized as a U.S. federal holiday beginning in 1938, celebrates the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and signaling the official end of World War I in 1918.

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Fifteen Soldiers, from the 25th Infantry Division, were honored for their contributions and selfless service during a retirement ceremony Dec. 4 at Sgt. Smith Theater on Schofield Barracks. The hosts for the event were Col. David B. Womack and Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey D. Sweezer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team command team. On behalf of the 2nd Bde. Combat Team and the 25th Inf. Div. we would like to say thank you for your wonderful service and a job well done.

Our chair is called 'The Seat of Selfless Heroes'
What our chair means to us:
Here is our chair - fit for an everyday hero. We are proud to say that everyone in Year 6 has contributed to its design and creation. When we were given the brief to design a chair for 'an everyday hero' we initially started to think about the heroes in our community. We came up with the National Health Service, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Army, the Police, the Air Ambulance and charities such as the Salvation Army, Crisis and Shelter. As many of us have parents or family working for these organisations, we felt it was important to represent them as the selfless work they do for our communities on a daily basis, is essential and can change lives. Each spindle has been painted according to the colours of each organisation: the Police - the spindle has been painted blue and yellow; the Army - green and brown to represent camouflage; blue and white for the NHS; read and white - to represent the Salvation Army, Fire Service, Crisis and Shelter; orange and black - for the RNLI; Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is green and yellow.
We were inspired by Jesus' words, 'I am the Vines, you are the branches, If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.' The legs of our chair are like the trunk of a tree - supporting and giving the strong foundation - just like those who remain strong for others and give up their time to care. Then the vine connects and wraps around the chair - showing that everyday heroes all connect in a similar way - there to support and bring light to others. Everyday heroes walk in Jesus' steps and selflessly give their time for the good of other people. Finally, the seat has been covered in beautiful flowers and leaves made by Year 6 to reflect the natural world. Around the back of the chair, the words from the Galatians taken form the Bible are inscribed on it. It states, 'And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.' Inspiring words for us all to live by.
