Medal ceremonies were held today at United Nations Headquarters in observance of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers (29 May). Members of peacekeeping operations who lost their lives during service were honoured with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal. The Captain Mbaye Diagne Medal, given to UN personnel who demonstrate exceptional courage in the face of extreme danger, was awarded to the late Chancy Chitete of Malawi, and received by his widow Lachel Chitete Mwenechanya. Private Chitete was honoured for his "brave and selfless" action during an operation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in November 2018, when he sustained fatal injuries while saving a fellow UN peacekeeper, who survived.

The story of the Rainbow Crow is a "Lenape legend", symbolizing the value of selflessness and service. After a long period of cold weather, the animals of the community become worried. They decide to send a messenger to the Great Sky Spirit to ask for relief. The Rainbow Crow, the most beautifully feathered bird, offers to make the arduous journey. He travels safely, and is rewarded by the Great Spirit with the gift of fire. He carries the gift in his beak back to his people, but he is not the same bird upon his return. The fire has scorched his plumage black, with only hints of his previous color, and his voice has been made rough and hoarse by the smoke. In this way, his sacrifice is commemorated.

More than ninety thousand Hongkongese took to the street today to protest against the implementation of Communist's National Education in Hong Kong.

 

According to the National Education curriculum resource handbook, the one-party system in Communist China is a superior system, much better than the multi-party system in the U.S.A. and many democratic countries. In the handbook, the Communist Party of China is also described as a political entity which is advanced, selfless and always working for its people.

 

According to a poll carried out by the University of Hong Kong, 52% of the public polled said National Education should be stopped and only 12% said it should be implemented. In another poll carried out by the Hong Kong Teacher Association, 70% of Hong Kong teachers are against the implementation of national education and 67% of Hong Kong teachers worry that such subject would become a political brainwashing machine.

 

Many locals believe the implementation of National Education is a political intervention masterminded by the Beijing Communist Government in an attempt to control Hong Kong's education system and to brainwash the young ones in Hong Kong.

In 2012 a giant black oak tree was discovered in a field at Wissington Fen in East Anglia. A 13.2m long section of an immense tree had been preserved deep in the peat for 5000 years. The tree is believed to have been 55 metres tall. For comparison, a present day oak tree is around 20 metres. Black oak is the nation’s rarest and most precious hardwood. It was decided that this incredible discovery needed to be preserved for future generations. Over ten years a team of privately funded specialist crafts people created a stunning sculptured table known as the Jubilee Oak Table

 

The black oak was discovered in 2012, the year of HM the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and was completed and unveiled in 2022, the year of HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The table was dedicated to HM the Queen and is a “Table for the Nation.”

 

The table has only been on public view once before at Ely Cathedral throughout 2022.

Alongside the table will be panels detailing the history of black oak (or bog oak). They will also detail elements of the 10 year project to turn the wood into a functioning table.

The church is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rochester in the Church of England and the seat (cathedra) of the Bishop of Rochester, the second oldest bishopric in England after that of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The edifice is a Grade I listed building (number 1086423)

 

The Rochester diocese was founded by Justus, one of the missionaries who accompanied Augustine of Canterbury to convert the pagan southern English to Christianity in the early 7th century. As the first Bishop of Rochester, Justus was granted permission by King Æthelberht of Kent to establish a church dedicated to Andrew the Apostle (like the monastery at Rome where Augustine and Justus had set out for England) on the site of the present cathedral, which was made the seat of a bishopric. The cathedral was to be served by a college of secular priests and was endowed with land near the city called Priestfields.[3][a][b]

 

Under the Roman system, a bishop was required to establish a school for the training of priests.[4] To provide the upper parts for music in the services a choir school was required.[5] Together these formed the genesis of the cathedral school which today is represented by the King's School, Rochester. The quality of chorister training was praised by Bede.

 

The original cathedral was 42 feet (13 m) high and 28 feet (8.5 m) wide. The apse is marked in the current cathedral on the floor and setts outside show the line of the walls. Credit for the construction of the building goes to King Æthelberht rather than St Justus. Bede describes St Paulinus' burial as "in the sanctuary of the Blessed Apostle Andrew which Æthelberht founded likewise he built the city of Rochester."[c][7]

 

Æthelberht died in 617 and his successor, Eadbald of Kent, was not a Christian. Justus fled to Francia and remained there for a year before he was recalled by the king.[8]

 

In 644 Ithamar, the first English-born bishop, was consecrated at the cathedral.[d] Ithamar consecrated Deusdedit as the first Saxon Archbishop of Canterbury on 26 March 655.[9]

 

The cathedral suffered much from the ravaging of Kent by King Æthelred of Mercia in 676. So great was the damage that Putta retired from the diocese and his appointed successor, Cwichelm, gave up the see "because of its poverty".[10]

 

In 762, the local overlord, Sigerd, granted land to the bishop, as did his successor Egbert.[e][11] The charter is notable as it is confirmed by Offa of Mercia as overlord of the local kingdom.

 

Following the invasion of 1066, William the Conqueror granted the cathedral and its estates to his half-brother, Odo of Bayeux. Odo misappropriated the resources and reduced the cathedral to near-destitution. The building itself was ancient and decayed. During the episcopate of Siward (1058–1075) it was served by four or five canons "living in squalor and poverty".[12] One of the canons became vicar of Chatham and raised sufficient money to make a gift to the cathedral for the soul and burial of his

 

Gundulf's church

 

Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury, amongst others, brought Odo to account at the trial of Penenden Heath c. 1072. Following Odo's final fall, Gundulf was appointed as the first Norman bishop of Rochester in 1077. The cathedral and its lands were restored to the bishop.

 

Gundulf's first undertaking in the construction of the new cathedral seems to have been the construction of the tower which today bears his name. In about 1080 he began construction of a new cathedral to replace Justus' church. He was a talented architect who probably played a major part in the design or the works he commissioned. The original cathedral had a presbytery of six bays with aisles of the same length. The four easternmost bays stood over an undercroft which forms part of the present crypt. To the east was a small projection, probably for the silver shrine of Paulinus which was translated there from the old cathedral.[f] The transepts were 120 feet long, but only 14 feet wide. With such narrow transepts it is thought that the eastern arches of the nave abuted the quire arch.[14] To the south another tower (of which nothing visible remains) was built. There was no crossing tower.[15] The nave was not completed at first. Apparently designed to be nine bays long, most of the south side but only five bays to the north were completed by Gundulf. The quire was required by the priory and the south wall formed part of its buildings. It has been speculated that Gundulf simply left the citizens to complete the parochial part of the building.[16] Gundulf did not stop with the fabric, he also replaced the secular chaplains with Benedictine monks, obtained several royal grants of land and proved a great benefactor to his cathedral city.

 

In 1078 Gudulf founded St Bartholomew's Hospital just outside the city of Rochester. The Priory of St Andrew contributed daily and weekly provisions to the hospital which also received the offerings from the two altars of St James and of St Giles.[17]

 

During the episcopates of Ernulf (1115–1124) and John (I) (1125–1137) the cathedral was completed. The quire was rearranged, the nave partly rebuilt, Gundulf's nave piers were cased and the west end built. Ernulf is also credited with building the refectory, dormitory and chapter house, only portions of which remain. Finally John translated the body of Ithamar from the old Saxon cathedral to the new Norman one, the whole being dedicated in 1130 (or possibly 1133) by the Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by 13 bishops in the presence of Henry I, but the occasion was marred by a great fire which nearly destroyed the whole city and damaged the new cathedral. It was badly damaged by fires again in 1137 and 1179. One or other of these fires was sufficiently severe to badly damage or destroy the eastern arm and the transepts. Ernulf's monastic buildings were also damaged.

 

Probably from about 1190, Gilbert de Glanville (bishop 1185–1214) commenced the rebuilding of the east end and the replacement on the monastic buildings. The north quire transept may have been sufficiently advanced to allow the burial of St William of Perth in 1201, alternatively the coffin may have lain in the north quire aisle until the transept was ready. It was then looted in 1215 by the forces of King John during siege of Rochester Castle. Edmund de Hadenham recounts that there was not a pyx left "in which the body of the Lord might rest upon the altar".[14] However, by 1227, the quire was again in use when the monks made their solemn entry into it. The cathedral was rededicated in 1240 by Richard Wendene (also known as Richard de Wendover) who had been translated from Bangor.[14][18]

 

The shrines of Ss Paulinus and William of Perth, along with the relics of St Ithamar, drew pilgrims to the cathedral. Their offerings were so great that both the work mentioned above and the ensuing work could be funded.

 

Unlike the abbeys of the period (which were led by an abbot) the monastic cathedrals were priories ruled over by a prior with further support from the bishop.[19] Rochester and Carlisle (the other impoverished see) were unusual in securing the promotion of a number of monks to be bishop. Seven bishops of Rochester were originally regular monks between 1215 and the Dissolution.[20] A consequence of the monastic attachment was a lack of patronage at the bishop's disposal. By the early 16th century only 4% of the bishop's patronage came from non-parochial sources.[21] The bishop was therefore chronically limited in funds to spend on the non-monastic part of the cathedral.

 

The next phase of the development was begun by Richard de Eastgate, the sacrist. The two eastern bays of the nave were cleared and the four large piers to support the tower were built. The north nave transept was then constructed. The work was nearly completed by Thomas de Mepeham who became sacrist in 1255. Not long after the south transept was completed and the two bays of the nave nearest the crossing rebuilt to their current form. The intention seems to have been to rebuild the whole nave, but probably lack of funds saved the late Norman work.

 

The cathedral was desecrated in 1264 by the troops of Simon de Montfort, during sieges of the city and castle. It is recorded that armed knights rode into the church and dragged away some refugees. Gold and silver were stolen and documents destroyed. Some of the monastic buildings were turned into stables.[22] Just over a year later De Montfort fell at the Battle of Evesham to the forces of Edward I. Later, in 1300, Edward passed through Rochester on his way to Canterbury and is recorded as having given seven shillings (35p) at the shrine of St William, and the same again the following day. During his return he again visited the cathedral and gave a further seven shillings at each of the shrines of Ss Paulinus and Ithamar.

 

The new century saw the completion of the new Decorated work with the original Norman architecture. The rebuilding of the nave being finally abandoned. Around 1320 the south transept was altered to accommodate the altar of the Virgin Mary.

 

There appears to have been a rood screen thrown between the two western piers of the crossing. A rood loft may have surmounted it.[23] Against this screen was placed the altar of St Nicholas, the parochial altar of the city. The citizens demanded the right of entrance by day or night to what was after all their altar. There were also crowds of strangers passing through the city. The friction broke out as a riot in 1327 after which the strong stone screens and doors which wall off the eastern end of the church from the nave were built.[24] The priory itself was walled off from the town at this period. An oratory was established in angulo navis ("in the corner of the nave") for the reserved sacrament; it is not clear which corner was being referred to, but Dr Palmer[25] argues that the buttress against the north-west tower pier is the most likely setting. He notes the arch filled in with rubble on the aisle side; and on nave side there is a scar line with lower quality stonework below. The buttress is about 4 feet (1.2 m) thick, enough for an oratory. Palmer notes that provision for reservation of consecrated hosts was often made to the north of the altar which would be the case here.

 

The central tower was at last raised by Hamo de Hythe in 1343, thus essentially completing the cathedral. Bells were placed in the central tower (see Bells section below). The chapter room doorway was constructed at around this time. The Black Death struck England in 1347–49. From then on there were probably considerably more than twenty monks in the priory.

 

The modern paintwork of the quire walls is modelled on artwork from the Middle Ages. Gilbert Scott found remains of painting behind the wooden stalls during his restoration work in the 1870s. The painting is therefore part original and part authentic. The alternate lions and fleurs-de-lis reflect Edward III's victories, and assumed sovereignty over the French. In 1356 the Black Prince had defeated John II of France at Poitiers and took him prisoner. On 2 July 1360 John passed through Rochester on his way home and made an offering of 60 crowns (£15) at the Church of St Andrew.[27]

 

The Oratory provided for the citizens of Rochester did not settle the differences between the monks and the city. The eventual solution was the construction of St Nicholas' Church by the north side of the cathedral. A doorway was knocked through the western end of the north aisle (since walled up) to allow processions to pass along the north aisle of the cathedral before leaving by the west door.[27][28]

 

In the mid-15th century the clerestory and vaulting of the north quire aisle was completed and new Perpendicular Period windows inserted into the nave aisles. Possible preparatory work for this is indicated in 1410–11 by the Bridge Wardens of Rochester who recorded a gift of lead from the Lord Prior. The lead was sold on for 41 shillings.[g][29] In 1470 the great west window at the cathedral was completed and finally, in around 1490, what is now the Lady Chapel was built.[27] Rochester Cathedral, although one of England's smaller cathedrals, thus demonstrates all styles of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.[30]

 

In 1504 John Fisher was appointed Bishop of Rochester. Although Rochester was by then an impoverished see, Fisher elected to remain as bishop for the remainder of his life. He had been tutor to the young Prince Henry and on the prince's accession as Henry VIII, Fisher remained his staunch supporter and mentor. He figured in the anti-Lutheran policies of Henry right up until the divorce issue and split from Rome in the early 1530s. Fisher remained true to Rome and for his defence of the Pope was elevated as a cardinal in May 1535. Henry was angered by these moves and, on 22 June 1535, Cardinal Fisher was beheaded on Tower Green.

 

Henry VIII visited Rochester on 1 January 1540 when he met Ann of Cleves for the first time and was "greatly disappointed".[31] Whether connected or not, the old Priory of St Andrew was dissolved by royal command later in the year, one of the last monasteries to be dissolved.

 

The west front is dominated by the central perpendicular great west window. Above the window the dripstone terminates in a small carved head at each side. The line of the nave roof is delineated by a string course above which rises the crenelated parapet. Below the window is a blind arcade interrupted by the top of the Great West Door. Some of the niches in the arcade are filled with statuary. Below the arcade the door is flanked with Norman recesses. The door itself is of Norman work with concentric patterned arches. The semicircular tympanum depicts Christ sitting in glory in the centre, with Saints Justus and Ethelbert flanking him on either side of the doorway. Supporting the saints are angels and surrounding them are the symbols of the Four Evangelists: Ss Matthew (a winged man), Mark (a lion), Luke (an ox) and John (an eagle).[52] On the lintel below are the Twelve Apostles and on the shafts supporting it King Soloman and the Queen of Sheba.[53] Within the Great West Door there is a glass porch which allows the doors themselves to be kept open throughout the day.

 

Either side of the nave end rises a tower which forms the junction of the front and the nave walls. The towers are decorated with blind arcading and are carried up a further two stories above the roof and surmounted with pyramidal spires. The aisle ends are Norman. Each has a large round headed arch containing a window and in the northern recess is a small door. Above each arch is plain wall surmounted by a blind arcade, string course at the roof line and plain parapet. The flanking towers are Norman in the lower part with the style being maintained in the later work. Above the plain bases there are four stories of blind arcading topped with an octagonal spire.[54]

 

The outside of the nave and its aisles is undistinguished, apart from the walled up north-west door which allowed access from the cathedral to the adjacent St Nicholas' Church.[28] The north transept is reached from the High Street via Black Boy Alley, a medieval pilgrimage route. The decoration is Early English, but reworked by Gilbert Scott. Scott rebuilt the gable ends to the original high pitch from the lower one adopted at the start of the 19th century. The gable itself is set back from the main wall behind a parapet with walkway. He also restored the pilgrim entrance and opened up the blind arcade in the northern end of the west wall.[55]

 

To the east of the north transept is the Sextry Gate. It dates from Edward III's reign and has wooden domestic premises above. The area beyond was originally enclosed, but is now open to the High Street through the memorial garden and gates. Beyond the Sextry Gate is the entrance to Gundulf's Tower, used as a private back door to the cathedral.

 

The north quire transept and east end are all executed in Early English style, the lower windows light the crypt which is earlier. Adjoining the east end of the cathedral is the east end of the Chapter Room which is in the same style. The exact form of the east end is more modern than it appears, being largely due to the work of Scott in the 19th century. Scott raised the gable ends to the original high pitch, but for lack of funds the roofs have not been raised; writing in 1897 Palmer noted: "they still require roofs of corresponding pitch, a need both great and conspicuous".[56]

 

On the south side of the cathedral the nave reaches the main transept and beyond a modern porch. The aisle between the transepts is itself a buttress to the older wall behind and supported by a flying buttress. The unusual position of this wall is best explained when considering the interior, below. The southern wall of the presbytery is hidden by the chapter room, an 18th-century structure.

 

he western part of the nave is substantially as Gundulf designed it. According to George H. Palmer (who substantially follows St John Hope) "Rochester and Peterborough possess probably the best examples of the Norman nave in the country".[60] The main arcade is topped by a string course below a triforium. The triforium is Norman with a further string course above. The clerestory above is of perpendicular style. From the capitals pilasters rise to the first string course but appear to have been removed from the triforium stage. Originally they might have supported the roof timbers, or even been the springing of a vault.[61]

 

The easternmost bay of the triforium appears to be Norman, but is the work of 14th-century masons. The final bay of the nave is Decorated in style and leads to the tower piers. Of note is the north pier which possibly contains the Oratory Chapel mentioned above.[62]

 

The aisles are plain with flat pilasters. The eastern two bays are Decorated with springing for vaulting. Whether the vault was ever constructed is unknown, the present wooden roof extends the full length of the aisles.

 

The crossing is bounded to the east by the quire screen with the organ above. This is of 19th-century work and shows figures associated with the early cathedral. Above the crossing is the central tower, housing the bells and above that the spire. The ceiling of the crossing is notable for the four Green Men carved on the bosses. Visible from the ground is the outline of the trapdoor through which bells can be raised and lowered when required. The floor is stepped up to the pulpitum and gives access to the quire through the organ screen.

 

The north transept is from 1235 in Early English style. The Victorian insertion of windows has been mentioned above in the external description. Dominating the transept is the baptistery fresco. The fresco by Russian artist Sergei Fyodorov is displayed on the eastern wall. It is located within an arched recess. The recess may have been a former site of the altar of St Nicholas from the time of its construction in 1235 until it was moved to the screen before the pulpitum in 1322. A will suggests that "an altar of Jesu" also stood here at some point, an altar of some sort must have existed as evidenced by the piscina to the right of the recess.[64] The vaulting is unusual in being octpartite, a development of the more common sexpartite. The Pilgrim Door is now the main visitor entrance and is level for disabled access.

 

he original Lady Chapel was formed in the south transept by screening it off from the crossing. The altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary was housed in the eastern arch of the transept. There are traces of painting both on the east wall and under the arch. The painting delineates the location of the mediaeval north screen of the Lady Chapel. Around 1490 this chapel was extended westwards by piercing the western wall with a large arch and building the chapel's nave against the existing south aisle of cathedral. From within the Lady Chapel the upper parts of two smaller clerestory windows may be seen above the chapel's chancel arch. Subsequently, a screen was placed under the arch and the modern Lady Chapel formed in the 1490 extension.

 

The south transept is of early Decorated style. The eastern wall of it is a single wide arch at the arcade level. There are two doorways in the arch, neither of which is used, the northern one being hidden by the memorial to Dr William Franklin. The south wall starts plain but part way up is a notable monument to Richard Watts, a "coloured bust, with long gray beard".[65] According to Palmer there used to be a brass plaque to Charles Dickens below this but only the outline exists, the plaque having been moved to the east wall of the quire transept.[66] The west wall is filled by the large arch mentioned above with the screen below dividing it from the present Lady Chapel.

 

The Lady Chapel as it now exists is of Decorated style with three lights along southern wall and two in the west wall. The style is a light and airy counterpart to the stolid Norman work of the nave. The altar has been placed against the southern wall resulting in a chapel where the congregation wraps around the altar. The window stained glass is modern and tells the gospel story.

 

The first, easternmost, window has the Annunciation in the upper light: Gabriel speaking to Mary (both crowned) with the Holy Spirit as a dove descending. The lower light shows the Nativity with the Holy Family, three angels and shepherds. The next window shows St Elizabeth in the upper light surrounded by stars and the sun in splendour device. The lower light shows the Adoration of the Magi with Mary enthroned with the Infant. The final window of the south wall has St Mary Magdelene with her ointment surrounded by Tudor roses and fleurs-de-lis in the upper light with the lower light showing the Presentation in the Temple. The west wall continues with St. Margaret of Scotland in the upper light surrounded by fouled anchor and thistle roundels. The reference is to the original dedication of the cathedral as the Priory of St Andrew. The lower light shows the Crucifixion with Mary and St Peter. The final window is unusual, the upper light is divided in three and shows King Arthur with the royal arms flanked by St George on the left and St Michael on the right. RIP - Tribute to Tony Perez

This is the story of an artist, a virtual friend whom you’ve never met in person, but with whom you share an undying passion for art. It’s a friend that was chosen from the thousands of photos on Flickr and whom, almost by chance, becomes part of your daily life through the exchange of comments on photos, sharing of ideas, and invitations to events, all leading to the inevitable exchange of artworks. These artworks arrive at any time of the year, packages coming in as a sort of “Santa Claus,” to celebrate the idea of spontaneous art, fun, generosity, and selflessness. It is this friend that we have the honor to celebrate in this corner today at Sk8 Like Canvas Vol. 2, thanks to an idea by Mr. Klevra.

>TonyTony< was the screen name of Tony Perez, an artist born to Spanish parents in northwest London and who landed in the US, more precisely, Kentucky. It’s from there he sent his beautiful multi-layer stencils out into the world via internet. His hyper realistic stencils reflect his own experiences and passion for vintage “Made in the USA” of the 1920s and 50s, including hot rods, swing, jazz, rockabilly, cult horror films, and so on. Pitched somewhere between low brow and urban art, he was an outsider who loved to march to the beat of his own drummer, just like us.

Tony posted his last masterpiece on Flickr on December 6, 2010. It was a beautiful 70x100, 13-layer stencil done in red tones that realistically captured the spirit of John Lennon in celebration of the 30-year anniversary of his death. It was still there on December 21 when Tony wrote his last commenting thanking everyone for the kind words that he’d received – punctual and polite as always. At 11 pm that same night a sudden heart attack took Tony away from his loved ones, friends of his posting comments immediately following the incident to let everyone know. It was a lightning bolt that struck through the clear blue sky, as they say in these cases.

While it isn’t our place to sing his praises or comment about him personally, being a person we never knew personally, what we can do, as both artists and curators being “on the ground,” is to continue to circulate his art to the public. This display starts with two skateboard pieces that Tony had already completed for the first edition of Sk8 Like Canvas. To this we have added some of the pieces that we had the pleasure to exchange with him, stencils on vinyl, record covers, cardboard, newspaper, and canvas, which are consistent with his practice of transforming everyday objects into masterpieces. His compositions, full of tonal subtlety, which layer upon layer show a rich hyperrealism that was always present whether the subject was a lost pop icon, vintage portraits of strangers, or old school tattoos – Tony was a window into his own time.

We’ll leave you with Tony’s own words, taken from his Flickr profile, which reminds me of a time this summer when, with Mr. Klevra and Jessica Stewart, we pasted up some of his stencils on newspaper in Pigneto. This long distance paste-up was an honor and it is thank to these exchanges that Tony’s work was able to arrive millions of miles away from Kentucky to places like Rome, Paris, Bogota, and Sao Paolo, Brazil, just another reminder of the power of his art to find its way into the hearts of the many users of Facebook and Flickr.

Currently living in Kentucky, USA

Born and raised in North west London, England to parents from Spain. Being an outsider and out of odds was a blessing and a way of life that has remained a constant thyme in my life.

Started painting and stenciling again after a couple of years of trying to find a balance in my life.

My art is influenced by many things but mainly my love of vintage Americana, thyme's such as Hot rods, 20's through the 50's, music swing, jazz, rockabilly and the life styles, classic movies specially of the horror type, knowing that below the lime light there has always been an underbelly of speak easy's and teenage delinquents. Growing up in London and old enough to remember the late punk scenes has inspired a love for going against the grain. Be it lowbrow or urban art it is a blending of images and thoughts that inspire me.

Every ones art is a reflection on their own personal experiences in life, the small things in life that seem to stand out as we make the journey. The way we view our surroundings and the times we live in. With such a mish mush of culture and commercialism it is easy to look to the past but all ways keeping an eye and your feet planted in the present.

Dylan Van Rooyen, a selfless volunteer in Surrey, is presented with BC’s newest honour on May 31st, 2016. Van Rooyen is a firefighter whose inspirational leadership and involvement with many organizations and events centres on helping Surrey youth and families. His service to community includes countless hours volunteering at organizations like the Child Development Foundation of British Columbia, Tong Louie Family YMCA, Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society as a director and committee member of its charity golf tournament and Leave a Legacy group.

I tried to represent that by holding out the heart, like I'm giving it to you. Lust is all about your own desires and pleasing yourself. I always feel so stupid writing in my diary about boys.

 

Why? Because my view of love is all wrong. I've never actually been in love, so I don't know what it is. What I do know is that what I think is love is nowhere near what love actually is.

 

In 7th grade I thought I loved one guy. Not long afterward, I thought I loved another guy. Just a few months later, I thought I loved still another guy. Currently, sometimes I think I love yet another guy. That is not love. None of it is really real.

 

I think that part of truly loving someone is wanting to grow old with them. True Love isn't something you can "fall out of." Any "love" that can change so quickly, unexpectedly, and abruptly is not love at all, but merely an unhealthy infatuation.

 

I'm pretty sure that most of us have experienced such infatuations. We tend to meet a person, find ourselves attracted to them, and then fantasize about our life together and our perfect relationship and our perfect wedding and how many kids we'll have, even though we barely know them. Later, we realize that that person is a jerk and we were just wasting our time.

 

I'm not saying we shouldn't be attracted to people. After all, attraction is one of the first steps toward true love. Attraction is not bad in and of itself; its "badness" (for lack of a better word) is based on what we make of it. Attraction does not have to lead to infatuation.

 

The opposite of love is selfishness. Infatuation and lust are forms of selfishness, because you are seeking to please yourself by your unrealistic fantasies instead of pleasing God by looking out for the other person and helping guard their heart.

 

I wish it were easy to control our emotions toward other people, but the honest truth is, it's tough. Anyone who has had a "crush" knows this. What we need to do is to TRY to prevent these things. Unfortunately, we'll never be able to prevent infatuation on our own. We can't do anything without God except maybe sin. We have to trust in God, and ask for guidance, as well as help with guarding the hearts and minds of ourselves and those around us.

Today is Veteran's Day in the USA

Dedicating this to my dear friend Kathi Litzenberger~ and all the caregivers who selflessly & lovingly care for family members who are unable to care for themselves. Kathi always has a supportive word for me when I'm overwhelmed, even-though her plate is fuller than mine.

 

~Anastasia has cared for her sister Clarabella since an awful accident injured Clara permanently and took their parents to heaven. Clara always has her sewing machine handy in case Anna's dolly needs a new dress. She loves to let her older sister know how much she appreciates all she does. Cousin Heidi often has the sisters over for tea. She knows that caregivers need a little attention too.

I was walking through the busy square in front of Bath Abbey when, from out of the corner of my eye, I suddenly became aware of this homeless guy - his bedding and other clothes rolled up in a neat bundle by his feet - make a grab for a pigeon. But it, and the other birds, swiftly fluttered to a safe distance.

 

It was then I noticed the large pieces of bread strewn around his feet and the birds soon ventured toward the food again. Another swift lunge and this time he’d caught the pigeon. For one slightly disturbing, fleeting moment, I wondered if he’d caught the bird to eat it, but as I turned to look more closely I soon saw that he’d caught it to remove some fishing line wrapped tightly around one of its feet.

 

He held the bird so gently, as he concentrated on carefully removing the twine. I took a few images as he neared the end of his task – the bird now completely relaxed in his hands. I tapped his leg to thank him for the pictures, he briefly looked up and flashed a quiet, satisfied smile back.

My sticker artist of the year ARREX is a highly interesting, motivated, selfless person who brings together people in the sticker community. So I gladly produce some work for his skull project.

Selfless service is contagious. Gurudwara at Manikaran is a good example of it.

Apart from all the mythology in Hindu and Sikh text (read wikipedia), Manikaran is famous for its Gurudwara and its hot springs. The town is slightly different from the rest of the Parvati valley, which has more of a Psychedelic vibe to it, if you know what I mean. Across Parvati valley there are several hot springs, though one by the side of the Gurudwara is probably the most used. The food that is served in the langar our here is partly cooked using the geothermal heat of the hot water from the this spring. One can stay and eat in gurudwara for free for as long as one wants. The atmosphere inside the Gurudwara, for that matter any Gurudwara, makes one admire the spirit of community service. One cant help but to offer himself selflessly for the service. The food is lovely and the intent with which it is served is even more so. And to top it, there is also hot tea made with black pepper at the end of the meal.

Recently the Gurudwara suffered severe damage due to a landslide on the mountain behind the premises. Apparently even that wasn't a show stopper. When we arrived there, trying to gaze if its open or not, we were surprised to discover it being operational at full swing.

A sad note to history, just after 9-1-1, a Phoenix area Sikh member was killed at Mesa store, a racial crime committed likely by his appearance interpreted as a Middle Eastern or Muslim man. Another was murdered in 2003. This beautiful faith and marvelous religious community built their temple in the last few years and the golden domes can be seen north of Highway 101 near 51st Avenue.

I stand before you today the representative of a family in grief, in a country in mourning before a world in shock. We are all united not only in our desire to pay our respects to Diana but rather in our need to do so.

 

For such was her extraordinary appeal that the tens of millions of people taking part in this service all over the world via television and radio who never actually met her, feel that they, too, lost someone close to them in the early hours of Sunday morning. It is a more remarkable tribute to Diana than I can ever hope to offer her today.

 

Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity, a standard-bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden, a truly British girl who transcended nationality, someone with a natural nobility who was classless, who proved in the last year that she needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic.

 

Today is our chance to say "thank you" for the way you brightened our lives, even though God granted you but half a life. We will all feel cheated that you were taken from us so young, and yet we must learn to be grateful that you came along at all.

 

Only now that you are gone do we truly appreciate what we are now without, and we want you to know that life without you is very, very difficult.

 

We have all despaired at our loss over the past week, and only the strength of the message you gave us through your years of giving has afforded us the strength to move forward.

 

There is a temptation to rush to canonize your memory. There is no need to do so. You stand tall enough as a human being of unique qualities not to need to be seen as a saint. Indeed, to sanctify your memory would be to miss out on the very core of your being, your wonderfully mischievous sense of humor with the laugh that bent you double, your joy for life transmitted wherever you took your smile, and the sparkle in those unforgettable eyes, your boundless energy which you could barely contain.

 

But your greatest gift was your intuition, and it was a gift you used wisely. This is what underpinned all your wonderful attributes. And if we look to analyze what it was about you that had such a wide appeal, we find it in your instinctive feel for what was really important in all our lives.

 

Without your God-given sensitivity, we would be immersed in greater ignorance at the anguish of AIDS and HIV sufferers, the plight of the homeless, the isolation of lepers, the random destruction of land mines. Diana explained to me once that it was her innermost feelings of suffering that made it possible for her to connect with her constituency of the rejected.

 

And here we come to another truth about her. For all the status, the glamour, the applause, Diana remained throughout a very insecure person at heart, almost childlike in her desire to do good for others so she could release herself from deep feelings of unworthiness of which her eating disorders were merely a symptom.

 

The world sensed this part of her character and cherished her for her vulnerability, whilst admiring her for her honesty. The last time I saw Diana was on July the first, her birthday, in London, when typically she was not taking time to celebrate her special day with friends but was guest of honor at a charity fund-raising evening.

 

She sparkled of course, but I would rather cherish the days I spent with her in March when she came to visit me and my children in our home in South Africa. I am proud of the fact that apart from when she was on public display meeting President Mandela, we managed to contrive to stop the ever-present paparazzi from getting a single picture of her.

 

That meant a lot to her.

 

These are days I will always treasure. It was as if we'd been transported back to our childhood, when we spent such an enormous amount of time together, the two youngest in the family.

 

Fundamentally, she hadn't changed at all from the big sister who mothered me as a baby, fought with me at school and endured those long train journeys between our parents' homes with me at weekends. It is a tribute to her level-headedness and strength that despite the most bizarre life imaginable after her childhood, she remained intact, true to herself.

 

There is no doubt that she was looking for a new direction in her life at this time. She talked endlessly of getting away from England, mainly because of the treatment she received at the hands of the newspapers.

 

I don't think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down. It is baffling. My own, and only, explanation is that genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum.

 

It is a point to remember that of all the ironies about Diana, perhaps the greatest is this: that a girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.

 

She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys, William and Harry, from a similar fate. And I do this here, Diana, on your behalf. We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair.

 

Beyond that, on behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative and loving way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men, so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned.

 

We fully respect the heritage into which they have both been born and will always respect and encourage them in their royal role. But we, like you, recognize the need for them to experience as many different aspects of life as possible, to arm them spiritually and emotionally for the years ahead. I know you would have expected nothing less from us.

 

William and Harry, we all care desperately for you today. We are all chewed up with sadness at the loss of a woman who wasn't even our mother. How great your suffering is we cannot even imagine.

 

I would like to end by thanking God for the small mercies he has shown us at this dreadful time; for taking Diana at her most beautiful and radiant and when she had so much joy in her private life. Above all, we give thanks for the life of a woman I am so proud to be able to call my sister: the unique the complex, the extraordinary and irreplaceable Diana, whose beauty, both internal and external, will never be extinguished from our minds. Uncle Raben is an incredible man. His personable and selfless nature balanced against his playful sense of humour make him an instant friend to anyone who takes the time to visit. Having previously worked as a land and game officer in Sarawak where he was tasked with regulating illegal hunting and poaching he now spends his time tending to his longhouse in Bario. He's also quite the resourceful individual, once administering his own stitches in the wild after suffering a sizable wound in the jungle without hope of medical facilities or a nearby doctor. I remember him laughingly telling me the surprised doctor's reaction after having finally reached one: "There's nothing to be done here, you've already taken care of everything."

@//W//@ AHHHHH Excuse me while I freak out and flail around for a moment asdfghjkllllll-

 

Okay okay okay, SO, i've had Rift borrowing Euclid's body for a few months now because i've been making her a lot of things and just for a little change of pace. I actually kind of really love having multiple dolls share a body because I store my dolls heads away and out of sight while they aren't on bodies so after a while of not seeing them its just the most magical experience opening that box and seeing them again. When I took Eui's head out of the box to put them back on their body....gosh I was just reminded of how much I adore them all over again. xD Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that. I think that has a lot to do with why I adore Rift so much too, after not seeing her for a while my face just lights up with excitement!

Anyway, another reason Rift was out for so long was because I had been slowly assembling the pieces of a special little something for Euclid off and on and was finally ready to go ahead and make it. That special something of course is their new wig!

 

xD Okay so this is going to be a loooong story to explain the context of why this is a thing even with me leaving a lot of details out but if you want to know more i'll put it below.

 

//CHARACTER RAMBLE BLAH

So you know how Eui's previous wig was missing a section on the right side? Well it wasn't to replicate the side-shaved hairstyles that are trendy these days but because canonically in their story part of Euclid's hair is burned off...by Faustus. It would take a long time and be quite spoilery to explain everything so i'll save that for a different day but the short version is that Euclid was in great danger and it forced Faustus to act upon the situation to save them and while he did, he also ended up hurting Euclid in the process. If you didn't know, my unicorn characters, the Unitiros, all are made up of a specific type of tangible energy that they both consume and exude and gives them life and while Euclid's is that of water/ice, Faustus' is that of fire. Unfortunately due to events that happened prior it left Faustus largely unable to control his power over Fire and he would burn almost anything/anyone he touched (including his trio) and when he did intentionally use his power it was wild and unpredictable so he would not use it unless he thought it was the only option. He was not always like this however, and this event marked the beginning of a lot of misunderstanding, betrayal, and heartache for all of them.

Anyway, In their species the hair is EXTREMELY important as a symbol of status and the only time one should ever drastically cut their hair is if they have been severely shamed. The Unitrios are also intensely harsh, catty, and judgemental in nature and even in Euclid's case where the mutilation that happened to their hair was not their fault, it does not change the fact that they are considered severely shamed and would henceforth be shown very little worth and respect and mostly avoided by other members of their species. Not only that, as the Unitrios form romantic trios rather than pairs, if even one member of the trio has been shamed in any way it reflects equally on the status of the other two so despite what happens to Euclid being deeply traumatic and unintentional, they are forced to suffer even more as the events leave them and their trio largely considered "dead" to the rest of their community. Like I said, I won't get into all the detail here but just know that events that caused Euclid to need saving from combined with the shame and disowning brought upon by Faustus' actions left Euclid in a deeply traumatized and basically "comatose" state (one under normal circumstances they should have died from) for a long time . Faustus of course felt deep, all consuming guilt for the terrible pain that he caused Euclid both physically (burns do physically hurt Unitrios but do not leave lasting effects on their skin nor can kill them in normal circumstances, but can still burn away their hair) and mentally and he felt like a liability to Euclid and everyone else around him, someone who could only hurt the ones he loved rather than protect them and this mindset caused him to become very distant to Euclid for a long time; time when they really needed him the most.

Fast forwarding quite a lot but eventually though time and the love and compassion of Hyacinth (the other member of Faustus and Euclid's trio...*cough*) Euclid is largely able to recover from these events and instead of cowering in shame from what happens they become a stronger (albeit completely different) person from it and learns to wear their scars with dignity despite what foul rumors and disrespect are aimed at them. But even the strongest of people have their insecurities and even at this point if Euclid were to be insulted for it they'd play it off with a witty remark, deep down they were still very much insecure about it as it was a constant reminder of mistakes they believe they had made. In truth, Euclid never blamed Faustus for what happened but rather blamed them self for creating the events that lead to it happening.

Fast forwarding again a bit into the future and the truth about what happened that day and who/what exactly was the cause of a lot of their trio's misfortunes, Faustus's affliction of being unable to control his power, and how Euclid even survived that day finally came to light. Again, huge spoilers there so won't get into all of that now, but because of the way a lot of things happened both Euclid them self and most other people assumed that Euclid was the center cause of everything that went wrong when really they weren't, or at least, they were not responsible for causing Faustus's affliction which essentially started this avalanche of awful.

So where does the new wig come in? Well, before Euclid's innocence was know regarding the cause of Faustus' affliction, Calliope (Faustus' younger sister) somewhat disliked Euclid purely because once Faustus and Euclid had met suddenly Faustus had very little time for Calliope anymore and Unitrios siblings are extremely (I mean almost uncomfortably) close. Then when Faustus' became cursed with his terrible affliction Calliope rather unfairly began to pin Euclid more and more as the cause of it with every passing day as more things went wrong. Calliope's own prior bias against Euclid and deep unwavering love to her brother caused an otherwise compassionate and reasonable person to become cruel and bitter to someone who didn't deserve it and said some truly heartless things. When it was finally revealed to everyone that Euclid was not the cause of what happened to Faustus, Calliope realized that she had projected so much anger and cruelty onto Euclid who was not only innocent the whole time but had endured so much more cruelty and pain than anyone she had ever know and felt so much shame and guilt for being a part of it. Calliope wanted to do something to atone for her wrongdoings and perhaps help Euclid to forgive her and she knew there was only one thing she could give that could ever show how sorry she was; her hair. Calliope knew that everyone else in their community had been doing the same as her in heartlessly judging and disrespecting Euclid all because of what happened to their hair even with how undeserving they actually were and knnew their community would still continue to insult and devalue Euclid so long as their hair was still mangled as it was. Ordinarily it would not be possible to do what Calliope had wanted, but she happened to have a friend who is a master of mending and thought just maybe she could help. Her friend, Xinka, is from a sort of "dragon-like" species and she was the unique ability to mend any of the scales that fall off back into her body since they do not naturally grow back. This ability is normal for those of her species but she is exceptionally gifted with it and can bond all manner of things together in a similar process from fabric to stone. So in an act of selflessness Calliope enlisted Xinka for her help and cut off some of her prized, unusually long and fast growing hair for Xinka to mend onto Euclid's burned areas so finally they would not have to bare such constant shame and torment any longer (and thankfully Calliope has such full, long and curly hair that cutting some away in strategic places made it almost completely unnoticeable so she would not have to bare the same ridicule, though she did intentionally cut the long locks of hair framing her face as she felt she needed the experience of "wearing her scars with dignity" as Euclid did). Oh course, Euclid being the wonderfully kind and understanding person that they are never thought ill of Calliope even when she was at her worst as she knew she acted that way out of love for Faustus and no matter their differences this is always something they will have in common. Euclid was completely overcome with the purest of love and thankfulness for what Calliope and Xinka had done for them as it was truly the greatest and most selfless gift that could ever be given. Now instead of looking back at their reflection as seeing a missing piece, a reminder of all the pain and heartache they has to endure, they see beautiful locks of blue hair as clear and radiant as the water itself reminding them that it is the people who they love and show love in return who will always be a part of them.

T//w//T So yeah. I left a lot of things out and just gave the bare bones there since its hella spoilery and all of these events span across literally years but yeah, hopefully that explains it decently enough and gives a bit more insight in regards to Euclid's hair which I don't know if I ever explained here before lol xD

^//w//^ So yeah, I had been slowly working with a batch of alpaca washing, combing, dyeing, wefting, etc. over the last month or so getting it ready to work on this super special wig for Euclid and GOSH am I happy with it *A*

Seriously, I was a little hesitant as to how it would turn out since I had some not-so-perfect results with my last few wigs but I'm soooo happy that this came out even better than I had hoped for. ;//A//: Seriously...Euclid is just so perfect I can't. Everything they touch just turns to perfection for me and its just the greatest feeling ever in this hobby. I feel like I constantly struggle with my dolls and feeling that they are lacking or that the things I make/do for them just aren't quite "there" you know? But with Euclid everything just seems to fall right into place just as I want it to and thus the journey of getting them "complete" has been so much more fast moving and enjoyable. Ahh, its hard to explain, but I bet we all have that one doll that somehow exceeds our expectations haha~

TwT Anyways, rambling but yeah! So obviously the blue section on this wig is meant to represent Calliope's hair and I was able to get the color spot on so i'm super happy with that. eue That was another reason why I really wanted to incorporate more blue tones into Euclid's faceup because I knew i'd be making this wig eventually and it to really look like the perfect extension of themselves, like it was meant to be. xD Also...I had a huge happy accident when dying the purple parts because I somehow ended up with two distinctly different shades of purple which wasn't my intention but i'm so happy it happened that way because it really ties together perfectly with the different purple tones in their faceup and also with their seahorse tail. Ack, love it sooo much~ TwT Ahhh, and also I forgot to mention that this is actually more like Euclid's natural hair texture. It should be a liiiiiitle less curly and more wavy but its pretty close. Euclid purposefully styled their hair more smooth and somewhat "masculine" when it was in its burned state as an additional layer of change in their persona, but this wig represents Euclid going back to a time that was lost, taking a moments reprieve to revive a side of them they never thought they could get back.

...xD Also these eyes aren't for Euclid haha I was just trying some Oscardoll eyes in them so I could see what size I need for them because my next big eye hunt is going to be for them...but these looked super good so figured i'd leave them in for a while haha. Euclid actually has two ever so slightly different colored eyes (one more blue and the other more purple) but its hard to find ones that are dark enough and have a subtle but noticeable difference so eventually i'm going to try and track down two pairs of dark purple and dark blueish purple Oscardoll eyes for them so wish me luck xD //shot

 

OKAY WOW RAMBLING. Alright i'm done....xD Except that I wanted to say that my Fairyland Momo bunny is on her way home!! Yaaay so excited! xD I'll have to snap a photo of her and my IOS Co together since I haven't posted him here either since he's blank lol.

The centenary of the birth of one of Britain’s outstanding trade union leaders is to be celebrated next week.

 

Jack Jones was born in York Street, Garston on 29 March 1913, His career embraced local politics, fighting in the Spanish Civil War, the leadership of Britain’s biggest trade union and campaigning for pensioners’ rights.

 

Community artworks by local artists Alan Murray and Nicola Taggart will be unveiled on Thursday 28 March in York Street following a procession from Railway Street. which includes local schoolchildren and residents.

 

The artworks include a mural at York Street commemorating key events in Jack Jones’ life. There will also be individual pieces at Railway Street about Garston icons and local people’s reflections of the area

 

Jack Jones worked at Liverpool Docks and joined the Transport and General Workers Union in 1927 He served as the youngest member of Liverpool Council between 1936 and 39. In 1937 he volunteered to fight with the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, being wounded in 1938 at the Battle of Ebro,

 

On returning to Britain he became a full-time official with the TGWU, becoming its General Secretary in 1968.During his time in office he became a household name as the membership of his union grew to two million.

 

On his retirement he fought for pensioners’ rights through the National Pensioners Convention which he chaired from 1979 to 2001.He died in April 2009.

 

“Jack Jones’ life was one of selfless devotion to improving the lives of working people and pensioners, “said the Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson.

 

“He was never interested in personal honours – he turned down a peerage and his whole life was dedicated to helping others. He is one of Liverpool’s greatest sons and it is only right that he should be honoured in his birthplace in Garston.”

 

Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey said: “Jack Jones was an inspiration to all who met him. He was a great fighter who fought fascism and injustice to create a better life for ordinary people.

 

“It is an inspiration to see children from local schools, residents, employers and workers coming together to celebrate Jack’s life and all that he stood for. He was a great man who touched so many lives and it is a privilege to be taking part in such an event in his home town of Liverpool.”

 

Councillor Steve Munby, City Council cabinet member said: “It is very appropriate that we should be honouring Jack Jones at this time as not only is it his centenary but some of the challenges he face in his lifetime are now confronting the city and we should be inspired by his work as we deal with them.”

 

The artwork and a celebration event are being funded by Speke Garston ward councillors, South Liverpool Neighbourhood team, Enterprise Liverpool, South Liverpool Housing, Liverpool Housing Trust and Unite.
