"We were talking about the idea of Brush for a while, quite a few years actually and I suppose just the time was right. It felt exciting, but almost a little bit impossible, but we thought: “Let’s just do it.” From signing the lease till opening we had literally two weeks. I was working from home then and coming down in the evenings, so it was exhausting, but it’s one of those things where you know you just got to do it and you run on adrenaline. It was like a massive whirlwind. We really wanted to open before Christmas and we did on the 15th of December 2014. It was amazing that we actually opened on time. It was full-on but we were pretty determined to do it. We didn’t know exactly how it’s going to look, we had an idea, but it wasn’t till the end when it actually all came together. I loved it from the beginning, I loved the location, the space, just having something of our own. It felt like such a massive achievement. I think what really made it all worthwhile is people’s reactions to the shop. Everyone was impressed which is what we wanted, I wanted people to love it as much as we did, that’s all we could have asked for.
I come from working at different hairdressers and I love my job, I love doing hair, but finding the environment that you love is not as easy. I managed to avoid all parts of hairdressing that I don’t like and put all the parts together which I do like. Now I am the happiest I’ve ever been when at work, really.
- What do you like about your job?
I like making people feel good about themselves, to make them feel happier about themselves. I come from a healthcare background and I enjoy having one-to-one with people, showing that you care. Some people come in and literally just spill their problems, so I have a strict line of confidentiality. People come from all walks of life, you get to have really interesting conversations, and I really enjoy that part of the job.
- What do you need to be a good hairdresser?
Obviously you need the technical skills and creativity, but I think one of the most important things is to be able to listen to what your client actually wants so you’re both on the same page and also be a good communicator. A lot of people hate going to hairdresser’s, like going to a dentist, they feel very nervous. Especially if it’s a new client, there’s a lot of trust involved, so you have to make a client feel as comfortable as possible.
- Do you see yourself doing this for the rest of your life?
Yeah, I think so.. as long as my arm holds up."

I started my own business after I got sick of working for too little at FedEx. I started Feb 99 and had to close down in Nov 04 as I lost my eye and lived in daily pain (still do) from cancer.
