On Sunday, March 19, 2017 Tigers Shotokan Karate entered a team in the "Karate-Do Federation 4th Open Championship" in Barking, London. This was a significant event; arranged by the English Karate Federation, and was much bigger than many of us had envisaged.
My son, Karl, was a member of the team that travelled to the event from Hertfordshire. I'm guessing, but there must have been at least 400 karateka competing in the championship and the standard was exceptionally high. I am very proud to report that Karl won a Bronze Medal in the category "Kata - Boys: 3rd-2nd Kyu / Age 9 to 12 Years". His elected kata was "Bassai Dai" and he did a sterling job against strong competition.
Unfortunately Karl did not win a medal in the "Kumite" (or freestyle fighting) category, but his tenacity and "Courage, Courtesy and Compassion" in combat made me very proud. He is a credit to St. Columba's College.
Karl was the only participant from St. Albans to come home with a medal, and this is a notable achievement.

Here are some of the students from DFMAC's Karate/Kung Fu for kids class. These students worked hard Monday night drilling self-defense techniques while practicing teamwork and control! Learning the ways of martial arts can be challenging sometimes, but these students are taught to have positive attitudes and to always try their best even at the most difficult of times.

Gus normally tears up any yarn that he can reach. This was amazing self-control on his part. You can see that his body is sort of in a relaxed position, but don't be fooled. His ears are way up on his head and his eyes are very wide - there is no relaxing around this much yarn.
