Here's a self portrait for my birthday. I can't say it was the best birthday ever.

Photo of me, looking at my self, looking at my self, etc., looking at my self portrait on Flickr. An Internet feedback experiment continuing from the previous shot...more to follow. Minimal photoshop work was done on this series.
(Each portrait of me was shot lighted with a different colored light, so while the color may look fake, it is pretty much what was there, with minor tweaks. Also, the colors get exaggerated/distorted with each iteration.) Part of a series/set called Self-Conscious.
The series works well as a slideshow too, if you have a moment to try it)
For me the highlight of the museum was the work of self taught taxidermist, Alex Walker. This must have been one of his earlier pieces. Still, quite arresting , no?
So, there I was standing outside the photo lab in the wind and rain with my Holga. The red counter showed ony 10 exposures so I needed to take 2 quick shots to use up the roll (don't like waste). Looking around nothing came to mind so there was only one thing to do - close up lens, arms outstretched and 2 quick self-portaits. Got some strange looks as I wound on between 11 and 12 but like I said it was raining and the street was nearly deserted.

Converted to monochrome with blue filter, and adjusted in Aperture, split-tone effect applied in Photoshop Elements.
Basically playing with my new tripod and flash:
- Gitzo Basalt Explorer legs
- Bogen Grip Action Ball Head
- Canon Speedlite 430EX
Flash was bounced against the ceiling and wall.
lesson #8 was portraits or a self portrait challenge, I had a few awesome people lined up in case my self portrait picture didn't turn out, I am happy that the tripod and self timer trick did the job!

Self portrait in available light. I like to take self portraits as it's a good way to practise techniques and lightning schemes. In this particular case, this is a narrow lightning (with the shadow side towards the camera), and a rembrandt lightning scheme, as light comes from aprox. 45º and above, creating that iluminated triangle on the cheek just under the eye and not going under nose level. Although light was hard, I like the overall result.
