Poor Sophie, about a week ago, started vomiting and staggering around like a drunk, and as she became worse she was unable to eat or even stand up. Her eyes were constantly darting back and forth (nystagmus).

We've never had a dog that was this sick who survived, so we were worried.

It turns out she has "old dog vestibular disease," and as far as I can tell it's a lot like having drunken bedspins but lasts a lot longer; and the good news is that it's usually self-limiting.

And now - great news: she's doing better. She can now walk on her own (still staggering) and is able to eat. She may never make a full recovery, but we are happy for the progress she has made.

This spiral expands at a linear rate, in effect expanding rapidly at the early stages, but then slowing down as subsequent additions are proportionally smaller to the total size. While these spirals appear very simple the question of how they acquire their size in the first place remains unanswered. Is it from a exponentiation expansion which then stops at a certain point to give way to a linear expansion? Or is it a self-limiting expansion which ends at a certain size? Or is the linear expansion made up of much smaller expansion? (as illustrated here). However, this still does not answer the fundamental question of how the spiral acquires its mass in the first place.

We have similar problems, and similar theories, on how particles acquire their mass and how space expands. While constructing these spirals, it struct me that at one scale we are looking at the uncurling of matter into a space, while at the other scale, space is expanding while matter is drawing together under its own gravity.

Nazca Booby Birds (Sula granti)

A Nazca Booby nest with two eggs, is normal. The birds here are able to nest on the ground, but there are problems for some chicks.

Two eggs are laid but only one chick will survive. There are no ground predators, but still, not all the chicks will survive. The stronger of the two will peck the weaker one until death. Scientists explain that through evolution, the species needed some way to limit the population to guarantee food for all. Wildlife is abundant here so some species must to be self-limiting or the food supply could not sustain the species.

A great deal has been learned from the wildlife on the Galapagos Islands. The Islands are isolated from the mainland of South American by distance and ocean currents. Each species has had to adapt here or become extinct.

Visitors, eco-tourists, are becoming more common. How much longer will the wildlife here be isolated and unique? Will today's fourth grade student get to see the Galapagos and all its wonders, when she is an adult?

One thing I need to watch out for with this new winder is that it'll be easier to wind in under tension. The extension cord reel was self-limiting to some extent because there was so much friction in it, if I wound under too much tension the winder would bind. This one may offer me new opportunities to hurt myself if the winder implodes from "band aid" forces.

Impossible Is Not What It Seems – It’s Just A Word Everyone needs to have a dream. A dream that encourages them to work hard to achieve it. The problem we have is the limitations other people put on us or we put on ourselves and we won’t accept that impossible is just a word. Who has the right to say “you will never be like whoever” or that is “just a pipedream”? It’s your dream and only you have the right to go for it or to give up. The dream you have requires action, not limitations or criticism by people who don’t share your own vision. If everyone worked with limitations, there would never be a new world record, any gold medal would never be won and big business people with high influence would never exist. Nearly everyone has big dreams and great aspirations based on our own passions and interests. Unfortunately, in so many cases, our dreams stay as just dreams. And our aspirations tend to “collect dust” like the excess stuff we put in our attics. Impossible Is Just A Word, But We Consider It As More. It’s a sad fact that instead of experiencing exciting adventures of achievement and working towards our goals, we all too often get mixed up living from day-to-day, barely existing. Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher. A very common problem when setting goals is thinking of the word impossible. Many people get to thinking “I can’t do this. It’s too hard. No one can do this”. It’s impossible – until somebody does it and then comes the “I should have, could have, would have, but…” stage If everyone thought about the word impossible in this way, there would be no invention, no innovation, and certainly no breakthroughs in human accomplishment. Remember when scientists were baffled when they looked at the humble bumblebee. They said it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly “theoretically”. Nobody thought to tell the bumblebee this, so it carries on flying regardless of the “theory”. There are those people who dream totally outrageous dreams and don’t take any action on them. This results in shattered dreams and aspirations. Thinking of “impossible” as more than just a word will see you limiting yourself with self-doubt and self-limiting assumptions. You will never be able to break past this feeling of your goals being out of reach no matter what you do. If you don’t take action and plan your progress towards your goals and dreams, you could find yourself hanging on to the “impossible dream”. I’m Possible Is A Better Way To Approach This. Turn this “impossible” word into 2 separate words. I’m possible. When you see this in front of you instead of just the one word of “impossible”, you will see things in a totally different light, A good exercise to do is this: Take a piece of paper and write down your ultimate dream or goal. Under one heading write down things you know you can do easily. Under another, write the things you are able to do with a little more effort. And under one more, list the things that that you once considered ‘impossible’, but are now just a little more difficult for you to do. Eliminate the word impossible from your thought process and get to work. Look at all the headings and strive every day to accomplish the goals that are listed under ‘you know you can do easily’. As you accomplish them, move on to the next heading that you are able to achieve with a little more work. Because you’ve now worked from easy to more difficult, AND achieved these goals, what do you think will happen when you take on the things you once thought were impossible, but listed as a little more difficult? As you move gradually through this process, you will find the goals you once thought were impossible are not so hard after all! The “impossible” is indeed possible! You have proved that impossible is just a word! The technique here isn’t to limit your imagination, it’s to aim high. Working towards that ultimate goal little by little. It will help to have a goal that is a realistic one though. Those who just dream without working hard to achieve the dream and goals always end up disappointed and disillusioned. My father told me about reading comics about men in space and landing on the moon when he was a lad. They used to laugh and say they would love to be the first man on the moon, never believing it would happen. Been there and done that. If you had told people 100 years ago that you could send mail electronically from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would not only wonder what electronically meant, but say you were out of your mind. Yet millions of emails are sent every day. Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Very true! To accomplish ones dreams, you need hard work and discipline. Remember that the 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one. So dream on! Don’t let yourself get caught up with limitations. Think big and work hard to achieve those dreams. As you progress, you will realize that impossible is just a word and almost anything is possible when you focus and apply yourself. The journey is critical for the artist — get out of the house! Find things that excite your passion, and give yourself to the passion of your artistry.

But...

Do not go unarmed. Your armor is the skill of your technique and your knowledge of what works and what doesn't. Your horse is the speed with which you execute new work. Be like the salamanders which are the coat of arms of this knight: abandon home when it becomes too constraining, and be swift when the rotting log is engulfed in flames.

Your destination is Egypt. Not literally, of course. Egypt is the land of alchemy in the language of Tarot, where lead is transformed to the other metals, and eventually to pure gold. After weeks of photos, videos, news cycles, and social media outrage about #PutinWarCriminal premeditated destruction of lives, livelihoods, and landscape as the International Community looks on, this scene from the coffee roasting factory's retail counter seems strangely normal; free of air raid sirens, bombs, artillery explosions, gunfire, and maiming of creatures including humans. Centuries ago news traveled slowly and often had to be sought out, rather than like today where it is hard NOT to get some fragment of events on the opposite side of the planet.

In the past 500 years of coffee drinking people would take in the flavorful warming brew and from the excitement of novelty, as well as the unaccustomed caffeine, they would talk and talk, hatching ideas, dreaming dreams, reviewing the news of the world as they knew it. Some of that continues in 2022 when two or more get together for coffee. Coffee shops are among the list of "third places," neither home, nor work. As such there is none of the baggage or inhibition associated with either home or work. This morning the shop was hopping; most tables had one or more coffee sippers in place. After 2+ years of pandemic restrictions, worries, and self-limiting life, seeing so many unmasked people in the shop seems out of the ordinary.

www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/possible-vaccine-linked-heart-p...

Possible vaccine-linked heart problem mostly mild, experts say

Doctors offered reassurance Tuesday following several dozen reports of mostly mild heart problems after Covid-19 vaccinations, but suggested recipients and their families pay close attention to possible symptoms, such as chest pain and shortness of breath.

It remains unclear whether the vaccine is the cause of the heart problem, called myocarditis. Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's vaccine safety group said it was looking into "relatively few reports" of the condition in vaccinated individuals — primarily teenagers and young adults.

The CDC did not respond to questions about the exact number of reports. However, NBC News identified at least 55 suspected cases nationwide.

That number includes 14 cases under investigation by the Department of Defense among members of the military, but it may be an underestimate. And some, but not all, state departments of health are tracking such cases.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health said 18 cases in teenagers or young adults have been reported in that state. As of Tuesday, all but one had been released from the hospital and are "doing fine," Dr. Deidre Gifford, acting commissioner for the Connecticut DPH, said during a news conference earlier this week.

Seven cases have been reported to the New York State Department of Health, three cases are under investigation in Idaho, and six have been reported in Oregon. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment has received four reports.

"In recent weeks, there have been rare reports of myocarditis and pericarditis occurring after Covid-19 vaccination in the United States and Europe," the CDC said in a statement. "Reported cases appear to be mild and often go away without requiring treatment."

Myocarditis and pericarditis are conditions that involve inflammation in and around the heart.

Cases have been reported more often in males than in females, according to the CDC. The onset occurs more often following the second dose, typically within four days of receiving that shot.

The agency is coordinating its investigation with the Food and Drug Administration, which authorized the vaccines for emergency use.

Still, the conditions are rarely serious, and often resolve quickly, experts said.

Dr. Alexandra Yonts, an infectious diseases specialist at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., has seen two cases of myocarditis in older teenagers, both within a few days of their vaccinations.

"Both cases were mild," she said, adding that the patients' chest pain went away by the time they got to the hospital. She reported both cases to the CDC for investigation.

Indeed, most cases go away on their own without patients knowing they ever had the condition, said Dr. Steven Nissen, chief academic officer of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.

He advises caution about any apparent link between the vaccines and heart problems.

"Keep in mind that Covid itself can cause myocarditis," Nissen said. "What we have is a disease that kills people, including young people, and a theoretical incidence of myocarditis."

"We ought to be very careful before we hype this up," he added.

What causes myocarditis?

A number of viruses can cause myocarditis, including enteroviruses, which tend to be more common during the summer months.

Infections from those viruses have been much rarer since the start of the pandemic, thanks to masks, said Dr. Hugh Cassiere, director of critical care services for Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital at North Shore University Hospital, part of Northwell Health, on Long Island, New York.

"Now that people are taking their masks off, we're transmitting more virus" once again, he said.

The CDC noted that the number of reports of myocarditis and pericarditis following Covid-19 vaccinations has not risen above the expected baseline rates, meaning the agency would have expected to see similar rates regardless of vaccination.

Symptoms can include fever and fatigue, but also shortness of breath and a very specific type of chest pain, Cassiere said.

"When you lean forward, it hurts more, and when you lean back, it feels better," he said.

Dr. Manesh Patel, chief of the division of cardiology at Duke University School of Medicine, said he's only seen one possible case, which he, too, reported to the CDC.

This kind of myocarditis "is usually sort of self-limiting, or improves as the heart gets better, even when it's inflamed," he said. "Just like with an infection, it gets better over time and so it's usually — thankfully — not very long-lasting in most cases."

Treatment may involve anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, and in some cases, a medication called IVIG.

Generally, children who have myocarditis will follow up with a cardiologist for about six months to make sure there are no other significant problems, Yonts said.

"I think it’s something we should be observing their children for, so if they are complaining of chest pain, they should take that seriously and monitor and talk to their pediatrician," she said, about what parents should do.

Cassiere, Nissen, Patel and Yonts all agreed that it is biologically plausible the vaccines could be causing the heart inflammation.

"When the body has a massive immune response, there's inflammation in lots of different areas. That's part of the reason people get side effects in general," Yonts said.

All also agreed that it's best to remain cautious about linking the two before more is known, and encouraged vaccinations regardless.

Complications seen with Covid-19 in children have been much more severe "than anything we've seen in these reports over the last month," Yonts said.

Everyone has a backstory. It’s the personal mythology that we weave around our lives, from the beginning to the present. You see, a backstory is more than just a personal history. These origin stories often form the narrative that we use to explain who we are, where we came from, and how we got here. Problems arise when these stories become devices that we use to justify our behavior or to prevent ourselves from changing or growing.

You could say that a backstory might become a “holding you back story.”

Most of our backstories begin before birth– with the tale of how our parents met. For those with family trauma, these stories may extend to include the trauma our parents and even grandparents suffered. Whether our parents were soldiers or immigrants, farmers or refugees– these stories get woven into our own. Knowing and understanding our history is powerful, but recognizing the gift of that knowledge requires using it to create a future that diverges from our past.

How many times have you heard someone’s backstory and recognized that they are repeating a narrative that they’ve internalized? The woman who grew up in an abusive household and now has an abusive partner, or the unfaithful husband whose father cheated on his mom– these are typical narratives that we see repeated. But what about the subtler ones, the ones that lie hidden deep?

A friend –who was sexually abused as a child– once revealed that she believed that only someone with a similar trauma could truly understand her. While she told herself and others this story, over the years I saw her stumble from one unhealthy relationship to the next. Eventually, she married and had a family with a wonderful, wholesome partner. And after a decade she left him for a man with a dark past who ended up sending her life spiraling. All this because she believed that this man’s backstory matched hers better– was what she actually deserved. We can pay dearly for the stories we attach to ourselves.

Common themes in backstories include ideas about money, class, education, and individual worth. If your backstory involves growing up poor and you feel shame about it, it’s unlikely that you will apply to a top-tier university, even if you have the grades to get a full scholarship. That’s because your story doesn’t make room for a different life. Your story tells you that affluent people will reject you. But the truth is that people are all cut from the same cloth: we are all people, each with our own backstory.

Each time you tell a story about yourself, you reinforce it a little more and ensure that it continues to be true. While there’s no need to lie about a backstory, there are kernels of truth, power, and inspiration to be gleaned from stories of how we’ve overcome loss, hardship, and unfavorable odds. Re-framing your backstory can change your future by removing self-limiting beliefs about yourself. A wise person once said, “What you focus on is what you create,” and I think nowhere is this more true than in the stories we tell about ourselves. Take your backstory to the therapist’s office and heal the parts that aren’t serving you on the floor. See where your improved backstory takes you, and don’t look back.

This deer wandered out of the dunes and into the backyard of the motel we were staying at in Ocean Shores, WA. I've seen deer with these tumors before, so I did a little research, and this is what I found out...

Wart-like growths found on the skin of deer are fibromas. They are popularly referred to as skin tumors, or simply warts. Histopathologists identify skin tumors from deer as papillomas, fibromas, or papillofibromas depending upon the predominate type of tissue making up the tumor.

Fibromas are conspicuous as firm, nodular masses fastened only to the skin and varying in diameter from 10 to more than 100mm. All are fleshy. Some are covered with gray or dark skin which often is scratched and bleeding. Others have a black, dry, hard surface that may be fissured much like the head of a cauliflower (as was the case with this one). The larger ones tend to be pendulous because of their weight and stem-like attachment to the skin.

Fibromas are randomly distributed on deer but occur most frequently about the eyes, neck, face, and forelegs. They may be single or multiple. A heavily infected deer may have 25 or more. Occasionally, in multiple infections, they are so numerous and close together that they join into one large mass. However, the incidence of severe involvement is extremely low. The fleshy or wart-like growths attached to the skin are the only sign of fibromatosis. Infected deer behave normally unless the location of the fibromas blocks vision or results in other physical impediment to normal activities.

It has been learned from experiments that infections stimulate an immune response in host deer, and thus become self-limiting. In most deer, the fibromas develop to only a few mm in diameter; they abruptly stop growing, dry up, and disappear. Only in an occasional deer do they develop into conspicuous skin tumors.

They didn't seem to be bothering this gal much, as she walked along munching grass. I bet those ones around her eye would be rather bothersome, though.

This very large rat suffered. In front of it's paws you can see what I believe is vomitus and blood. Wouldn't their population be self-limiting if we took common sense measures to clean up after ourselves? I know that's likely asking too much of us as a species so instead we kill them inhumanely.

It explores the process of how we honor our divinity and reclaim our innocence, while embracing our sexuality and indulging our mind-altering appetites for pleasure — all in the shadows of shame, self-limiting beliefs, destructive attachments, and maybe even erotically-charged spiritual warfare.
