A narrow plane of focus was created by using a tilt-shift lens (NOT a software effect)!

Selective colouring. I think it works quite nicely here - just a shame I had to cut Sian's hand out (bloomin' cigarettes, tsk!)
Q1. I like to take close up images, or very neat images. Unfortunately I don't have a set of criterion to generate these types of photos, I just take them when I feel it's necessary. Selective focus tends to make images look more real than real life, by accentuating the depth of field so greatly and neatly (by blurring backgrounds and keeping the subject sharp) to the point that they are almost too satisfying to look at.
Q2. Specifically I used selective focus, and some rule of thirds. Rule of thirds has become standard in my thought process - I always try to generate the right amount of space in an image to spread things apart just enough.
Q3. The short focal depth of f3.5 helped take such a close up image leaving multiple close-up objects in and out of focus. The lowest ISO also helped in leaving such a warm tone, since higher ISO settings also tend to generate a greenish tint in the image. Having set the shutter speed to 1/400 helped create a dynamic image by darkening the image slightly.
