Acacia auriculiformis, called simply "auri" on Guam, is an Australian acacia widely planted around the world. Because of the tree's tolerance to acid soils, it is commonly used to restore degraded lands. On Guam plantations of A. auriculiformis are also being established to shade out grasses and cut down on grass fires. On better soils the tree fixes nitrogen. The species can be invasive, as the seeds are spread by birds. On Guam that has not been a problem since the bird population was decimated by the brown tree snake. Immature seedpods of Lunaria (Honesty) do their best to imitate Munch's The Scream.

I went to have a little potter in the garden today to se how much tidying up needs doing. I am loathe to cut back too much at the moment incase there is a hard frost soon and the plant roots aren't well protected. Or at least, that's my very lazy for excuse for not actually doing any work...

There is a fair bit of weeding to do as you can see from the edges of the photos and I probably ought to do that sooner rather than later.

A couple of plants are actually still flowering from last year and some are even flowering anew this year already because it has been so mild. As I looked around, I spotted these Physalis skeletons, glistening with raindrops. I like the contrast of the old seed pods turning into skeletons, with the seeds inside, hopefully ready to create a new crop of plats later this year.

I love these plants, they are vibrant and so different to the other things we have in the garden.

G is for ..... Garden for the January SH (though I may change this if I can get the other shot I have planned).

This is a mature seedpod of a Tropical milkweed plant, about ready to split, prior to seed release.

Well, a seed pod dropped off a tree, but it does look alien, doesn't it?

Seed pods for a tree or bush of some kind - I'm not sure what. They look like blueberries, but spikier.

Wild cucumber seed pods shot with dual flash units: built-in and off-camera unit at the top of the frame. I wanted to make the spikes more dramatic by using the flash units. I set the built-in flash to -1 and set the external unit to -0.5. I found that there are nearly an infinite number of variations in setting these flash values and moving the external unit closer or farther.

With any luck there'll be quite a few seeds to grow on!

Cardiocrinum are large bulbous perennials with heart-shaped leaves and trumpet-shaped flowers resembling lilies, followed by erect oblong seed capsules, as may be seen here in this image!

Monocarpic, the bulbs dying after flowering, but more are created at the base of the dying plant, which will flower in two years' time, thus making it almost deathless!

C. giganteum is a perennial to 2m in height, with leaves to 30cm across, and terminal racemes of fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers marked with purple within the mouth.

I do love it's dramatic appearance!

These are the seed pods of the Forsythia. They look almost like the flowers.

Husks of Spring blossoms, green Summer leaves and seed pods, pale yellow Fall leaves, and stems that will weather the Winter rains.

I've also been trying to get H. schizopetalus to set seeds. I've looked and looked and never found H. schizopetalus seeds for sale. One of my friends thinks that all H. schizopetalus in the US is the same clone, as he's also tried unsuccessfully to get it to set seed. This aborted on December 19, almost two weeks from pollination, which is about the best I've been able to get. This was pretty well filled, and had many developing seeds that I have put into culture. Eventually I want to convert H. schizopetalus to tetraploid, and seeds are the easiest way to do that.

Cynthia's new figure in wax. I don't know how the seed pods will come through in the bronze but they look very good now.

this is an Ashe magnolia pod, a lovely small endangered southern tree. Its leaves are enormous! They can be a foot wide & 3 feet long; the flowers are often 6" long, white, and smell wonderful. This one lives at my favorite nursery.

Some interesting looking seedpods and remaining red leaves of a shrub in winter.

A stunning purple seed pod, probably of Saraca sp. (Fabaceae), photographed at Darwin Botanic Gardens, Darwin, Australia. Few photos or species descriptions make reference to these brightly coloured seed pods, so if anyone can confirm the genus or identify to species, that would be greatly appreciated. The white spots on the pod appear to be mealy bugs of some sort, which are being attended by Green Tree Ants.
