A Karen Padaung woman, North of Thailand near Mae Hong song
The Padaung are a sub-group of Karen living in Kayah state of eastern Burma on the Thailand border. They number less than 40,000 people in total. The Padaung call themselves "Lae Kur" or "Kayan". They have their own language which belongs to the Kenmic group in the Tibeto-Burman language family.
The Karen themseves are not one homogeneous group but rather a loose confederation of heterogeneous and closely related tribes. Among the smallest of the Karen tribes in Thailand are the Karen Padaung.
In Thailand, only a few families of Padaung have settled temporarily as refugees in Muang District of Mae Hong Son Province, near Ban Tha Ton in Chiang Rai Province, and as of June 2005 a small group near Chiang Dao. Generally they live among other hilltribes groups, mostly Karen.
The Padaung escaped from the Kaya State in Burma to Thailand in the mid to late 1900's and are actually refugees of a political turmoil. They belong to the Karenni sub-group of the Karen People, which are still fighting for their independence in Burma.
We did a small group shoot in downtown Boise right before a mandatory mask mandate took effect. Fun shoot with three gorgeous models. Britni was one of them - she is a blast to shoot with. I love how quickly she can change expressions and can cover so many looks in one shoot. As always, I enjoyed shooting with her and can't wait for the next one.

I've shot with Taryn numerous times over the years. She recently took an extended break from shooting to get married and have a beautiful baby daughter. Now she's getting back into it and we're both happy about that. I've always had great chemistry with Taryn - she is so much fun to shoot with - and I think it shows.
We did this shoot on another gawd awful hot afternoon in Caldwell, Idaho in an underpass that at least provided shade. We both loved the shoot but it left us sweaty and exhausted. I took these photos in mid-August 2022.

These photos are from a shoot I did with the lovely Anna way back in August 2004. Anna was a wild child back then but a blast to shoot with and be around. Sweet and funny too - we had a great chemistry. We started this shoot at Lake Hood until one of her piercings fell into the dirt and gravel parking lot. After we found it we had to rush to a local tattoo parlor to get it cleaned and re-set. While Anna was getting this done I was stuck with some very dubious looking characters waiting to get ink or piercings. Some were scary. We finally finished at the tattoo shop and finished the shoot in South Anchorage. What a fun adventure!
