Originally Tuol Svey Prey secondary school in Phnom Penh, this became security office 21 (S-21), the biggest prison in Kampuchea. Thousands were held and tortured in "Building B", pictured here, which now has photos of the victims and details of court cases. From 17,000 people imprisoned here between 1975 and 1978, only seven survived; one of them, Heng Nath, has painted picture of the tortures which took place here, and some of the implements remain.
Duch, the head of Tuol Sleng, was a former schoolteacher, Kong Kech Eav. He ran the secret security police and perfected the Khmer Rouge's purge system. Photos were taken of everyone admitted here, and when they were close to death, to prove that the enemies of the state had been killed. But the torture was secret. Bulletin boards kept rules for the inmates, including not to cry out. Interregators were told to promise prisoners the right confession could save their lives, or the lives of their families. Prisoners had to write and sign their own confessions. Tuol Sleng was the nerve centre of the system of terror.
According to Elizabeth Becker's "When the war was over" there were Tuol Slengs all around the country but killings were never done out in the open. At Tuol Sleng the confessions were written down, detailing the party debates, intrigues and power struggles that took place in 'democratic Kampuchea'.

A gate to keep the cows in place but not the goats. We joked that it was another security checkpoint: passport please!
The reason it took 24 hours to drive 700km was 1. the difficult zigzag road up the mountain. 2. too many tea stops (I don't understand the 1.5hr dinner stop at 3.30am) and 3. the six security checkpoints we had to stop at, show passport/visa and write passport/visa number in secuirty logbook (along with destination to/from, occupation, reason for travel, contact in pakistan, duration of stay, mother's maiden name etc). at one stop we even had our mugshot taken, it was in a little mud hut in an isolated desert surrounding. that in itself was a unique experience. although that was about the 20hr mark and by then I'd become numb to all sensations. As you can see, humour only returned after about 3 weeks. (We took the bus back the same way and it was only about 18 hours! Faith in humanity Fully restored)

On May 22, 2020, members of the Diplomatic Security Service Basic Special Agent Course (BSAC) Class 146 conducted Protective Security (PRS) training at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, Va., where the Foreign Affairs Security Training Center is located. PRS training is the final exercise in BSAC and simulates dignitary protection in a motorcade and on foot. During this training, the special agent candidates wore face coverings and maintained social distancing in accordance with recommended protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. With the arrival of the Covid-19 virus and social distancing so many things we took for granted are now in sharp focus. The virus will impact everything. Social behaviours will change. I don’t think people fully realise how profound this moment in time is. We don’t yet know how much it will change society.
Touch or haptics, from the ancient Greek word haptikos, is important for communication. We can use technology to speak to each other when thousands of miles apart, but we cannot replace touch, which is the most sophisticated of our six sense.
Touch is visceral, intuitive and the fastest way to communicate information because it evokes a gut reaction. It by-passes rational thought. Think of your reaction to touching a hot stove.
A 2009 study by Matthew Hertenstein found that participants were able to communicate eight out of 12 emotions by using touch alone. The research suggests touch may be more effective at subtly conveying emotions than verbal and facial communications.
From a hug to a kiss, to a pat on the back and a touch of the hand, we must now weigh up the risks of transmitting a potentially deadly virus to our colleagues, friends and loved ones.
