With the arrival of the Covid-19 virus and social distancing so many things we took for granted are now in sharp focus. The virus will impact everything. Social behaviours will change. I don’t think people fully realise how profound this moment in time is. We don’t yet know how much it will change society.

Touch or haptics, from the ancient Greek word haptikos, is important for communication. We can use technology to speak to each other when thousands of miles apart, but we cannot replace touch, which is the most sophisticated of our six sense.

Touch is visceral, intuitive and the fastest way to communicate information because it evokes a gut reaction. It by-passes rational thought. Think of your reaction to touching a hot stove.

A 2009 study by Matthew Hertenstein found that participants were able to communicate eight out of 12 emotions by using touch alone. The research suggests touch may be more effective at subtly conveying emotions than verbal and facial communications.

From a hug to a kiss, to a pat on the back and a touch of the hand, we must now weigh up the risks of transmitting a potentially deadly virus to our colleagues, friends and loved ones.

Security measures, including razor wire and concrete barriers, were erected around the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis in anticipation of the Derek Chauvin trial. The trial, which began in March 2021, stemmed from the death of George Floyd in May 2020. The extensive security presence reflected concerns about potential unrest and protests following the highly publicized case. The Government Center serves as a central hub for county administration and judicial proceedings.
