With the arrival of the Covid-19 virus and social distancing so many things we took for granted are now in sharp focus. The virus will impact everything. Social behaviours will change. I don’t think people fully realise how profound this moment in time is. We don’t yet know how much it will change society.
Touch or haptics, from the ancient Greek word haptikos, is important for communication. We can use technology to speak to each other when thousands of miles apart, but we cannot replace touch, which is the most sophisticated of our six sense.
Touch is visceral, intuitive and the fastest way to communicate information because it evokes a gut reaction. It by-passes rational thought. Think of your reaction to touching a hot stove.
A 2009 study by Matthew Hertenstein found that participants were able to communicate eight out of 12 emotions by using touch alone. The research suggests touch may be more effective at subtly conveying emotions than verbal and facial communications.
From a hug to a kiss, to a pat on the back and a touch of the hand, we must now weigh up the risks of transmitting a potentially deadly virus to our colleagues, friends and loved ones.

Perlyn has been a security guard for 10 years. It was her first job. She chose this profession because the schedule enabled her to take-up night classes. She eventually finished a 4-year course in criminology. She plans to take up the board next year that would qualify her to apply in the military force. Yes, she wants to be in a SWAT team. So she is presently reviewing for the board. She has a regiment to stay fit and is also into networking. She sells health products and her robust physique attests to the effectiveness of her vitamins. She says she is fond of selfies and it became apparent in her ability to strike several poses.
She was the guard-on-duty behind the chapel where they had religious dioramas. I asked her if I could take her picture for the project. She immediately said yes; as she explained, she loves selfies so she didn't mind having someone else take her picture.

2013 United States Presidential Inauguration
The security for the inaugural celebrations is a complex matter, involving the Secret Service, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Protective Service, all five branches of the Armed Forces, the Capitol Police, the United States Park Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. Federal law enforcement agencies also sometimes request assistance from various other state and local law-enforcement agencies throughout the United States.
All the Police Officers and Soldiers that we encountered that day were friendly and very helpful.
