1969 Jane 1973

Feminist Underground Abortion Service

110+ member performed over 11,000 illegal abortions in Chicago

"Those of us who were members of Jane were remarkable only because we chose to act with women's needs as our guide. In doing so we transformed illegal abortions from a dangerous, sordid experience into one that was life affirming + powerful." Lauren Kaplan

Wangari Maathai: Founder of the Greenbelt Movement

"The Greenbelt Movement is commited to increasing public awareness of the relationship between environmental degradation, poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, mismanagement of natural resources and the political and economic impact of these throughout Africa." -Wangari Maathai

Celebrate People's History

Wangari Maathai, born in Kenya, Africa, wished to restore her country's degraded environment while providing poor rural women with better economic lives. The Greenbelt Movement deliberately discouraged participation by technicians and managers from outside the community, to encourage confidence in local peoples, who are often overwhelmed by experts and come to think they are incapable and backward. As of 1995, more than 60 thousand women have planted over seven million trees in their communities. The Greenbelt Movement has spread to over 30 countries.

Did you know...

Lucy Terry Price (1730? ~until~ 1821) is the first published African American poet. Her poem, written while she was a slave, is entitled "Bars Fight." "Bars Fight" describes a deadly confrontation between British settlers and American Indians prior to the American Revolution. Years later (1855) "Bars Fight" was published in The History of Western Massachusetts. Lucy's husband Abijah bought her freedom and they moved form Massachusetts to Vermont. Don't think Lucy kicked back and wrote lots more...nothing else tat she may have written survives. Abijah predeased Lucy. When it came time for her son's higher education she argued in front of the board of trustees of Williams College for his admission. Unfortunately, she was unsuccessful. And when her neighbors tried to seize her land? She argued her case in the state supreme court. Impressing the justices with her presentation, she (rightly won her case. Find out more about this African-born woman!
