Well-named for the butcher's bill that resulted from this part of the battle.
This photo was taken from Little Round Top, from which Union Gen. Howard repulsed many Confederate attacks on the second day of the battle of Gettysburg. The valley and stream between where I am and Devil's Den is rightly called the Valley of Death and Bloody Run.
On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 4th NY Battery, part of General Sickles' 3rd Corps, stationed several cannon on top of the boulders. Sickles' advance was ill-advised, having exposed much of his force to counterattack. The 1st Texas, the 15th Georgia, and the 3rd Arkansas infantry attacked Devil's Den from the Triangular Field, and after terrific fighting the 3rd Arkansas, with support from the 1st Texas, took Devil's Den from the Union troops, who retreated to Little Round Top, from where I acquired this photo.
The rest of Day Two's fighting involved the Confederate assault of the union forces on Little Round Top, which failed. More on that next photo.
These granite boulders are igneous rock, part of a huge ribbon (a "diabase sill") of molten magma that long ago (180 MYA) poured between layers of sedimentary rock through what is now Gettysburg battlefield.
VW Brasilia.
Official first day of show. Some cool cars, and some cool parts at the swap. Any doubt, just ask.

It took four days spread out by about a month to complete my trip, and when I pulled up to this sign, I knew that within 10 minutes, I'd have traveled all of MN Hwy 1 with the exception of a 10 mile spot by Greenbush. I'm going to have to redo the trip a few more times to get all the pictures and the stories that I want. It was a fun trip. And I hope to do with someone else again in the future.
