Raymond Priestley was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 1938 and had little time to settle into the role before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 affected most aspects of university life. He kept detailed personal diaries for most of his life, and those written during his time in Birmingham provide a unique record of the challenges of running the institution in wartime. He regularly added photographs, newspaper cuttings, and other items to his diaries, and these photographs show some of the ways in which the university responded to Civil Defence requirements. One photograph shows Priestley in Home Guard uniform, as part of the University Home Guard Company that was formed. The other photograph shows a student on duty outside one of the sentry boxes, reinforced with sandbags. Students and staff were formed into groups for fire watching duty as well as taking part in military drills in the Senior Training Corps. The Edmund Street buildings suffered bomb damage in late 1940 and early 1941, and incendiary bombs fell on the Edgbaston campus during Easter 1941. Air raid shelters were provided for students and staff in the experimental coal mine on the Edgbaston campus, and in the basement of the Edmund Street buildings in the city centre.
