To the Reader, by Ben Jonson

The poet and playwright, Ben Jonson wrote a poem about the portrait of Shakespeare that appears in the First Folio. It is unusual to find a poem like Jonson’s on the verso of an early modern book.

Jonson’s poem praises Droeshout’s portrait as a likeness of Shakespeare’s face, but laments that it cannot communicate the quality of Shakespeare’s wit. Therefore, the poem asks people to look at Shakespeare’s work and not his portrait.

Jonson had written plays for the King’s Men, the acting company in which Shakespeare was an actor and shareholder as well as a scriptwriter. Shakespeare and Jonson may have been literary rivals, but there was also a mutual respect. Jonson’s writing demonstrated a sincere affection for Shakespeare. In the publication Discoveries, Jonson said about Shakespeare ‘I lov’d the man, and do honour his memory (on this side Idolatry) as much as any. He was (indeed) honest, and of an open and free nature.’

Master Simon Wong does not give names to his paintings. The Tao Te Ching states: The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal Name. When the Master uses the finger to point at the moon the student should not just be looking at the finger. The finger is just a tool pointing to the direction. Painting is the same, the medium that is used is not important, it is the mental expression behind the art work that gives a picture its spirit. People posed as statues around Paris to raise viewers' consciousness about the importance of art and to raise funds for art museums. As author Mario Vargas Llosa said in Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (paraphrased): During a s - - t storm the best umbrella you can have is art.

Available Now: Pearl Harbor: The Movie and the Moment Hardcover

aimcollectibles.blogspot.com/2011/11/pearl-harbor-movie-a...

As the title portends, this extravagantly illustrated book has more to do with the recently released movie than with the historical event. Still, its plethora of full-page color photos will prove irresistible to both budding directors and historians. Following a preface by the movie's producer, director, and scriptwriter (and several obligatory pages on the cast), the book devotes the next three parts to an overview of America and Pearl Harbor before, during, and after the bombing raid. The broadly informative text is supplemented by sidebars, a time line of events of December 7, 1941, and illustrations showing how many of these events are depicted in the movie. The final section deals strictly with the creation of the film, explaining how the makers handled stunts and both aerial and underwater shooting. Quotes from the film's participants reveal how period costuming, weaponry, and various aspects of the attack-including the rollover of the battleship Oklahoma-were re-created.

It all started in 1994. TV scriptwriter Stefan Struik had an interview with a meditating hermit in Baarn (NL) who was complaining about gnomes who disturbed the power network in his house. A month later he ran into trolls in a Norwegian clothing store in the Dutch-Frisian village Dokkum. A year before he got surprised by the amount of one meter high garden gnomes just across the border between Germany and Poland. It all seemed to point into a new direction he would hit a few months later. In December 1994 he opened with his sister a small game and bookstore in Delft (NL), named Elf Fantasy Shop. The games were a golden opportunity. Three years later the duo could open an second store in The Hague.

In 1995 Stefan also started a new adventure with a free magazine called Elf Fantasy Magazine. In 2001 the magazine became professionalized and despite it never realised any profits it existed until 2009.

Stefan and his sister already organised lectures in the Elf Fantasy Shops about druidism, Tolkien and other fantasy related subjects. In 2001 Stefan decided to combine a few things into a totally new and unique festival concept that later would be copied many times: the Elf Fantasy fair. Starting in the historical theme parc Archeon (NL) it moved the year after to the largest castle in the Netherlands: castle de Haar. With the exception of 2004 (castle Keukenhof, Lisse) it remained in castle de Haar, Haarzuilens since then. In 2009 a second version of the Elf Fantasy Fair started 400 meters from the border with Germany in the small village Arcen in Northern Limburg. In January 2013 the name Elf Fantasy Fair™ was replaced by the name Elfia™. The spring edition of Elfia is also called the 'Light Edition', while the autumn edition is characterized as the 'dark edition'.

Vintage Italian postcard. Ed, Vettori, Bologna, 40[?], late 1910s or early 1920s.

Bianca Virginia Camagni (Milan, 17 July 1885 - Canzo, 8 September 1960) was an Italian film director, actress and producer active during the silent film period. She was one of the first and most important female figures in Italian silent film directing along with Elvira Notari, Elettra Raggio, Diana Karenne and Daisy Silvain. She is also remembered for the variety of acting roles she managed to play throughout her career. Unfortunately, many of her films are lost.

Bianca Virginia Camagni was born in Milan on 17 July 1885 and trained as an actress in the city's stage companies. She was a woman of refined upbringing who loved the company of intellectuals, men of letters and artists. She could speak several languages, played the piano and travelled throughout much of Europe. Her career began with the theatre and she did not concentrate on film until the eve of World War I She made her debut in 1913 at Mediolanum Film and moved to Milano Films at the beginning of 1914. In June of the same year the Milanese company decided to dedicate a series to her (as it did for the better-known Mercedes Brignone and Hesperia), which was, however, interrupted with Italy's entry into the World War. The actress played various leading roles during this period: in the comedy Dietro un cespuglio (1914) by Guglielmo Zorzi, in the dramas I naufraghi del potere (1914) by Enrico Rappini and Nel nido straniero (1914) by Baldassarre Negroni, in the adventurous Oro che uccide (1914) by Enrico Rappini.

The years of the First World War were a crucial period in the development of Camagni's career: she collaborated with leading Italian intellectuals and at the same time worked as director and scriptwriter in various films. During 1915 she was ‘lent’ to Mediolanum Film as a leading actress, alongside Paolo Colaci, for the operatic film I pagliacci by Francesco Bertolini, based on Ruggero Leoncavallo's 1892 opera of the same name. In the same year she was a regular partner with Luigi Serventi in a series of dramatic films directed by Augusto Genina for Milano Films such as La gelosia (which still exists) and La fioraia di Como. Again in 1915 she played the part of a fatal woman in Guglielmo Zorzi's film L'agguato alongside Hesperia and Livio Pavanelli. Again directed by Zorzi, she starred in L'idolo bianco (The White Idol), then advertised as a ‘drama of passion and adventure and also had a role in Baldassarre Negroni's Passa la guerra (Passes the War).

In 1916, she starred in Ugo Falena's Cavalleria rusticana, a film adaptation of Giovanni Verga's famous 1884 novella of the same name, produced by Tespi Film in Rome and shot in competition with Flegrea Film's eponymous version. Again with Ugo Falena, she wrote the subject of the film Il figlio della guerra (The War Child) for Galatea Film (or Film d'Arte Italiana) and played the Contessa d'Algo, opposite Luigi Serventi. Alfredo Marchetti in a magazine of the time described the actress as ‘a marvellous performer. A wife, a patriot and a most effective mother'. An incomplete version of this film was shown at the Cinema Ritrovato festival in 2016. 1916 was the year she also signed her first direction (together with Ugo Falena), for La piccola ombra. Antonio Rosso wrote on this subject in the magazine Apollon: ‘Bianca Virginia Camagni is perhaps the most intelligent and the most cultured among the actresses of our cinema. This is demonstrated by this Piccola ombra that she has written and interpreted, and which is the first example of a drama of any value and originality due to a screen actress".

Camagni also worked as a performer in the film Il Re, le Torri e gli Alfieri (The King, the Towers and the Bishops, 1916) by Ivo Illuminati, based on a short story by Lucio D'Ambra, who also wrote the screenplay. It is a story set in an imaginary tournament of love and politics, which takes place on the black and white squares of a symbolic chessboard and features Countess Giorgia Dentice di Frasso, Luigi Serventi and Enrico Roma. It was one of the most famous films in the entire history of Italian silent cinema and was also a huge success in France, where it was screened at the Gaumont-Palace in Paris and remained on the screen for several months under the title Echéc au Roi. Unfortunately, the film was lost (but do check our our postcard series on the film at our Flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/tags/ilreletorrieglialfieri ). Judging by the surviving material, Camagni had her own sober and restrained interpretative style, far removed from that embraced by her contemporary Italian actresses who reverted to an acting style with very marked lyrical gestures, typical of a diva such as Lyda Borelli.

In 1917 Camagni acted in La crociata degli innocenti (The Innocents' Crusade), written by Gabriele D'Annunzio and directed by Alessandro Blasetti and two assistants, Gino Rossetti and Alessandro Traversa. Camagni, who played the character of Vanna, once again acted alongside leading figures of the cinema of the period, such as Giulietta De Riso, Luigi Serventi and Lea Righelli. She also acted in the film adaptation of Marco Praga's eponymous 1903 novel L'ondina, produced by Comerio films in Milan. Due to an ineffective distribution that released the film discontinuously in various theatres across the country, the film received little critical consideration at the time. As an actress she also had a role alongside the famous Italian director Mario Bonnard in one of his minor films entitled La strage degli innocenti. Between 1917 and 1919 she interrupted her career as an actress and director for almost two years to serve as a nurse for the Italian Red Cross.

Many of the films Camagni starred in after the First World War failed to be produced and distributed due to the financial difficulties faced by Italian cinema in the aftermath of the conflict, such as Luciano Zuccoli's La compagnia della leggera, Irma Gramatica's Usque dum viva et ultra and ...Povero cuore...! by Camagni herself, which had raised great expectations. However, there was no lack of important collaborations and moments of experimentation.

Camagni was sentimentally linked to the Emilian painter and sculptor Severo Pozzati (known as Sepo) and was the protagonist, together with him, of interesting experiments born from the thought of Alfredo Masi, who conceived cinema as a figurative art, based on light, shapes and colours and made more expressive by the combination with music. In 1919 (with the support of the Milanese industrialist Achille Brioschi) Masi had the idea of shooting a film based on these premises with his friend Sepo, also involving the musician Vittorio Gui. Camagni was given the role of a melancholic and cruel Pierrot. The film, entitled Fantasia bianca (White Fantasy), was a failure due to the editing by Gui and Masi, who made the music the fulcrum of the work, making the visual part a simple succession of images that was defined ‘an attempt at art’ and therefore withdrawn from circulation. At this point, Bianca Virginia Camagni, assisted by journalist Tito A. Spagnol, took over the film and re-edited it, also introducing some new scenes and a new character, which she entrusted to Amleto Novelli. The title was changed from Fantasia bianca (White Fantasy) to Fantasia and saw the light of day in 1921 thanks to Camagni Film, a production company, this one, specially set up in the same year as the film's release. Despite mixed reviews and not very satisfied audiences, the second edition of the work had a much better outcome, at least from a financial point of view.

In 1919, as an actress, Camagni had a prominent role again alongside Mario Bonnard (and under Bonnard's direction) in the film La stretta (also called Nella stretta), produced by Cines. With her own production company she wrote, directed and starred in a modest number of films: among the most famous were La sconosciuta (1921), co-directed with Tito A. Spagnol, where she had a leading role alongside actors of the calibre of Alberto Collo and Amleto Novelli. It was a passionate and romantic drama in which a poor young man falls in love with a young princess, but reasons of the heart do not prevail over dynastic ones and so the young lover takes his own life. Other titles produced by the Camagni Film company were La bella nonna and Il cuore e l'ombra (both 1922). In 1921 she also worked in supporting roles with Turin's FERT, such as in Guglielmo Zorzi's film La donna perduta, which was widely circulated and much appreciated by the critics of the time, who described it as a ‘very tasty work, full of verve, played with impeccable intuition by all the actors’.

Bianca Virginia Camagni retired from the profession in 1922 after only nine years of her career. She declared on this subject in an interview a few years earlier (1917): ‘I love the cinema and I feel that this ardour blazes within me with such fury that one day I will end up not being able to stand it any longer. [...] Everything I do, I do by myself: I weave the strands, I write the play, I do the performance." Her career also ended due to a major fire that struck her own film production company, Camagni Film. Once she had completely retired from the stage, she lost all trace of herself. All that remains of her work today is La gelosia, one of the first roles she played for Augusto Genina's direction, Il figlio della guerra (a copy with missing captions) and a very short fragment, barely visible, of Cavalleria rusticana. During the Second World War, as an evacuee, Camagni left Milan to take refuge in Canzo, in the province of Como, where she died on 8 September 1960 at the age of 75.

Final Project:

You will be required to work on a project that includes photographing (a minimum of) five different individuals in the style of your choice. Once you have selected the style, keep it consistent throughout the series.

You will also need:

1. an establishing shot (an image that tells us something about your idea. For example if you were to do a series of chefs the establishing shot could be a close-up of a measuring spoons.)

2. a self-portrait, with a brief artist statement

Side Note: A lot of thing didn't come through like I had wanted. Had flakey models, then scored on a really expressive friend of a friend, and I got these new to me models that showed up and kicked ass, then I got severely sick and ended up in urgent care Monday, etc. But hopefully I was able to get domestic abuse portrayed like I wanted to. I decided not to try for sexual abuse because no matter how I tried it, it could be construed as porn, and that isn't something I wish to ever touch upon.

Artist's Statement:

Emmy's work is influenced by elements in the world that most people consider to be imperfect, broken, or weak. She builds upon imperfection because it is the only true indicator of character and beauty. She captures imperfection as the summit of her art. She is inspired by things that surround her every day, and uses them as a creative base. As the proud divorced, single mother of five closely spaced children she has no shortage of material from which to draw.

With her work, it is difficult to ignore the obvious experience and background Emmy has in graphic design. In addition to photography and graphic design, she is an entrepreneur, business ideas person, CEO of a small assessment corporation, movie scriptwriter, mother, and friend to all, even those pesky telemarketers if they happen to catch her on the telephone at home.

The most important thing to Emmy is the opportunity to create art. To be an artist, even an unknown one, is more important to her than going forth and finding notoriety. She feels the only way for her to create is to continue growing as an artist whether by introducing new techniques, new mediums, or a combination of both. Her primary focus is on creating art that reaches across boundaries. She creates art that speaks figuratively and demands its own place within its world. She tries to create art that will link people to her, and with her.

Ben Stein Biography

Ben Stein has had what may be the most diverse career of anyone now on the national scene. He is in every sense a Renaissance Man. He has been an award winning actor, economist, writer, journalist, and teacher, and is equally well known in America’s board rooms and in America’s dormitories and fraternity houses. He is certainly the only man to be a famous humorous teacher about economics and law.

Ben Stein was born in Washington D.C., the son of noted economist and writer Herbert Stein. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he studied alongside future luminaries Sly Stallone, Carl Berstein, Goldie Hawn, and Connie Chung. He received a B.A. with honors from Economics of Columbia, where he was active in the civil rights movement to secure voting and other legal rights for African-Americans. He was valedictorian of his class, by election of his classmates, at Yale Law School class of 1970, where he also worked strenuously part time as a poverty lawyer and as an activist and demonstrator for civil rights and decent treatment of the poor.

After graduation, he served as a poverty lawyer in the field of advertising, and a teacher about the political content of the film and TV at American University, UC Santa Cruz and Pepperdine. He was a speechwriter and lawyer for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He also did legal work for Mr. Nixon, in the darkest days of Watergate. He is not, repeat not, Deep Throat.

He was a columnist for The Wall Street Journal and also wrote editorials for the Journal. In June of 1976, he moved to Hollywood to become a novelist, TV sitcom writer, and movie scriptwriter. He has written and published 17 books, seven fiction and the rest nonfiction. His diary of his first year in Hollywood, DREEMZ, was called “stunning” by the New York Times. His novel a Ludes’, about a drug and money addiction in Los Angeles, was made into the movie “The Boost” with James Woods and Sean Young. He has also written many screen plays, some of which were actually made into movies. Most of his books are about Hollywood and mass culture, but some are self-help, and some are about finance. He labored especially hard on a decade long project of exposing financial fraud and the self-dealing at large companies. His work on the Milken/Drexel junk bond scheme was instrumental in the recovery of billions for investors and tax payers.

Stein has also taught about law and economics and securities law at Pepperdine Law School for many years and has served as an expert witness in many securities law cases.

In 1986, with no professional training, Stein became an instant cult hero for his role as the boring economics teacher in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, which scene was directly voted one of the fifty funniest scenes in American film history. After that, Stein went onto be a recurring character in Charles in Charge, and then The Wonder Years, and then in 1997, began his long running hit quiz show, Win Ben Stein’s Money. The show has won six Emmies and Stein has won one for best game show host. In all, his show has been nominated for 17 Emmies.

Ben Stein’s latest book is How To Ruin Your Life. He writes regularly for E-Online and The American Spectator and over his life has been a columnist for New York Magazine, Los Angeles Magazine, Barrons, and many other magazines.

Stein lives with his beloved wife of 36 years, Alexandra Denman, and their son, the devilishly handsome Thomas Stein, in Los Angeles, California, center of the universe.

Master Simon Wong is originally from China and has been a British resident since 1978. Master Simon Wong is a spiritual Master, a Feng Shui Master, a professional Chinese Astrologer, an artist, musician, songwriter, scriptwriter and author. After perfecting his artistic style for the last 40 years, Master Simon Wong is now exhibiting and selling his work.

Two of the authors are American including a Hollywood scriptwriter, and the third is from the UK. Bob Stevens (Malcolm In The Middle and The Wonder Years) presents "Here Today" with John and Paul sparring about their songs and exchanging tender moments from their childhoods. Trevor Boelter's "And Now It's All This" deals with Brian Epstein sorting out the storm that followed John's celebrated remark about The Beatles being more popular than Jesus. UK writer Neil Walden offers a black tale about Maxwell called "Silver Hammer Man". For more details: www.acedrama.co.uk
