Master Simon Wong is originally from China and has been a British resident since 1978. Master Simon Wong is a spiritual Master, a Feng Shui Master, a professional Chinese Astrologer, an artist, musician, songwriter, scriptwriter and author. Master Simon Wong does not give names to his paintings. The Tao Te Ching states: The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal Name. When the Master uses the finger to point at the moon the student should not just be looking at the finger. The finger is just a tool pointing to the direction. Painting is the same, the medium that is used is not important, it is the mental expression behind the art work that gives a picture its spirit. After perfecting his artistic style for the last 40 years, Master Simon Wong is now exhibiting and selling his work.

Speaking to Akhtar was Anubha Rohatgi of the BBC Hindi Service. He told her how Mumbai represents the country of India as a whole.

This is my brother-in-law, Al. Together, we're taking care of his father while his mother takes some time for herself. Al lives in Brooklyn, New York City, with his wife, Polly. By day, he's a carpenter: by night, he's front man for the pop rock band 1-800-BAND.

I've know Al since he was 12. He's the brother I never had, and the elaborate pranks we used to play on the pizza delivery people of Delaware, Ohio, became the inspiration for my middle school-grade book, Pizza Man.

Al and I are funny apart, but together we're a tidal wave of hilarity. (Just ask us.) Every couple of years, on Christmas Day, we make a bad movie that makes us laugh and laugh and laugh. Here's a link to the last one we made: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpZoQuqFp84

I'm grateful for you, brother. :)

P.S. If you watch the movie, and I hope you do, you'll see me (as the director), my son (as the mumbling personal assistant to Al's character, Art Martial) and my nephew Ben (as the scriptwriter). My daughter Mara provides the voice-over narration.

William Faulkner (1897-1962), who came from an old southern family, grew up in Oxford, Mississippi. He joined the Canadian, and later the British, Royal Air Force during the First World War, studied for a while at the University of Mississippi, and temporarily worked for a New York bookstore and a New Orleans newspaper. Except for some trips to Europe and Asia, and a few brief stays in Hollywood as a scriptwriter, he worked on his novels and short stories on a farm in Oxford.

"The date of Manganji's founding is unclear, though it may have its antecedents in the Heian Period, when it was originally a Shingon sect temple.

During the Edo Period in 1697, Manganji became a Nichiren temple and many of the present buildings date from that time, including the Main Hall constructed between 1702-1704 and the Bell Tower in 1703. It is thought that Nichiren (1222-1282) himself once stayed at the temple in its earlier incarnation...

...The spacious grounds of Manganji Temple contain a memorial to the film director and scriptwriter Kenji Mizoguchi (1898-1956), who directed such classics of his time as Ugetsu (1953) which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Mizoguchi worked in Kyoto's Nikkatsu's studios for a period directing such movies as Osaka Elegy and Sisters of the Gion.

After the war, Mizoguchi along with fellow director Yasujiro Ozu, of Tokyo Story fame, were "rediscovered" and acclaimed in the West. At the time of his death in Kyoto of leukemia, aged only 58, Mizoguchi ranked as one of the three great masters of Japanese cinema alongside Ozu and Akira Kurosawa."

Gerard Brach (b. 1927) rarely goes out of his Parisian flat due to his agoraphobia. Yet from within the confines of his sparse walls he has written the widest variety of films. Seated at his table this diminutive man with a big heart tells us about his long career with Polanski before moving on to films such as The Lover, In the Name of the Rose and City of Joy.

His vocal chords have been affected by an illness which has given his voice a gravely rasp, not unlike Brando's Godfather. Nevertheless, his passion for his work is unmistakeable. While most of the writers in the book mention literature as their influence, Brach finds his greatest inspiration in the world of art.

Along one wall of his flat are scores of large art books. Indeed, he convinced Polanski of the parallels between art and film. In Tess, Polanski was encouraged to include scenes which are direct cinematic copies of certain Bruegel paintings.

His relationship with Polanski features prominently in the interview. Not surprising since Brach penned 10 films for him.

While discussing the adaptation of In the Name of Rose with Jean-Jacques Annaud and Umberto Eco, the latter whom he describes as the most intelligent man he has ever met, Brach recalls with a wry smile saying, "Umberto, you know so much about so many things but only I know how to adapt your book into a screenplay."

Suso Cecchi d’Amico (b. 1914 d. 2010) is the writer of over 100 screenplays since 1946 including The Bicycle Thief, most of Visconti’s films, as well as films for Antonioni, Fellini and the other great Italians. Cecchi d’Amico is easily the most prolific screenwriter of the century. Now a noble 93 years old, she speaks softly and warmly in a charming accent about her illustrious life and her inspirations for writing for cinema.

When asked about the birth of Italian neo-realism she merely laughs. She tells us that there was merely a group of friends who wanted to make films but had little money. So they made films as cheaply as possible - borrowing equipment, using old film stock and using real people. Only later did somebody else, somewhere else in the world, decide to give it a name, call it a movement and write books about.

Later, however, she relates a pivotal day in the history of the world and of cinema. It was August, 1945. d’Amico was sitting around with a group of writer friends and brainstorming on a comedy.

Suddenly the radio reported that the Americans had dropped a bomb on Hiroshima. The group of friends were shocked. They immediately went over to their producer’s house and told him right then and there that they were dropping the comedy. They had decided they must make films with more pain, more reality in them.

A year and a half later, The Bicycle Thief was released. A movement that changed the course of cinema was born.

Although West had been working on his writing since college, it was not until his quiet night job at the hotel that he found the time to put his novel together. It was then that he wrote what became Miss Lonelyhearts (1933). Maxim Lieber served as his literary agent in 1933. In 1931, however, two years before he completed Miss Lonelyhearts, West published The Dream Life of Balso Snell, a novel that he started in college. By then, West was within a group of writers working in and around New York City that included William Carlos Williams and Dashiell Hammett.

In 1933, West bought a farm in eastern Pennsylvania, but he soon got a job as a contract scriptwriter for Columbia Pictures and moved to Hollywood. He published a A Cool Million in 1934. None of West's three works sold well, earning him less than $800, so he spent the mid-1930s in financial difficulty,[9] sporadically collaborating on screenplays. Many of the films he worked on were B movies, such as Five Came Back (1939). It was at this time that he wrote The Day of the Locust. He took many of the settings and minor characters of his novel directly from his experience living in a hotel on Hollywood Boulevard.

Death

On December 22, 1940, West and his wife Eileen McKenney were returning to Los Angeles from a hunting trip in Mexico. West ran a stop sign in El Centro, California, resulting in a collision in which he and McKenney were killed. (Their deaths occurred the day after that of their friend F. Scott Fitzgerald.) McKenney had been the inspiration for the title character in the Broadway play My Sister Eileen, and she and West had been scheduled to fly to New York City for the Broadway opening on December 26.[11]

West was buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Queens, New York, with his wife's ashes placed in his coffin.

Grade fives at Chaparral School questioned how organization makes them feel as they approach their daily learning tasks. We feel that this is an important problem to address because if desks are unorganized, it is difficult to find learning tools, leaving us feeling frustrated and stressed. As a result, this takes away from learning new concepts. If our desks are organized, it will help us have optimal learning time, and will increase our productivity. We identified that desk items need a specific area to ensure easy access, leaving us feeling organized and in control. We’ve been concentrating on Character in Learning, and what that means with regards to independent learning strategies. This big idea connected perfectly with our individual targets.

We connected this idea to kitchen drawers and utensil organization. A student quickly went to work creating a model and testing it. We began to collaborate ideas such as personalization, connecting with individual needs of students, including customizable aspects such as colour and movable pieces. We used our desk trays, cardboard and duct tape, and the Desk Divider by Desk Busters was created.

We designated specific jobs in order to collaborate and create a project we are all proud of. Jobs included designers, scriptwriter, actors, marketing and more! This project is an expression of our creative skills and imagination. It includes sculpture, scientific design and dramatic interpretation. We combined visual and performing elements to express our vision in a variety of ways.

British short story guru and scriptwriter joined us on the Noosa writing retreat. We stopped at a cafe and found a pantry designed as a TARDIS. Great for Rob who wrote the great episode "Dalek"
