The Kenduli Mela in Birbhum is most well known for the gathering of the Bauls, a group of mystic minstrels who travel throughout the land singing songs and playing music that transcend all religions and scriptures.. They are the bearers of a unique musical tradition, who are identified by their saffron attire and distinctive musical instrument, the Ektara.
Kenduli, birth place of the famous poet Jaidev in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Kenduli is at a distance of about 42 km from serene Shantiniketan, Rabindranath Tagore's abode of peace.
The Baul community earns their livelihood by singing. The most interesting characteristic of their songs is that they convey profound philosophical view points of life using simple expressions.
The Kenduli Mela in Birbhum is held on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. This occurs each year in mid January.
Fast for Justice - Day 7: Witness Against Torture's Art Laffin reads scripture outside a major entrance to the CIA in Langley, Virginia.
An interesting cross. Starting at the bottom, you have Jacob wrestling with "the Devil" (in quotes because most modern scholarship doesn't believe this figure to be the Devil but God Himself, perhaps a preincarnate Christ). Go one up and you have Paul and Timothy talking. One more is Christ as Judge, accompanied by two angels harkeening the end of the world. The very top two symbols are ancient symbols for faith. On the left of the bar is David. The right bar is Daniel in the Lion's Den.
