I had to squeeze in a very tight spot to get this view... I was not even sure if this shot came out or not. After processing, I was bit surprised to see all the hues of red...

Old Coca-Cola signs are perfectly photo-worthy...blue sky backdrops are even better!!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

They're about to make the turn south down to Hamilton in this photo.

Looking across at the parge panels of flowing Mongollian script from the wooden bench in the Ancient Asian Artifacts room at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Not surprisingly the Mongollian script is very similar to ancient Chinese script.

I *very* rarely use my lunch hour to go railfanning. Time, and the lack of interesting trains on the Dayton District over the past year or so have negated the need. This day's train was a worthy exception.

Leading NS 60P through Springfield, OH was CP 7015, painted in its snazzy, retro Canadian Pacific scheme with block lettering on the long hood. Trailing it was a train of potash bound for the Indiana and Ohio Railway for eventual delivery to a fertilizer plant in South Charleston.

Three distinct sets of petroglyphs can be seen in the caves and some depictions are as old as 7000 years. Edakkal is the only known place for stone age carvings in South India. The carvings belonging to Neolithic and Mesolithic Age include ancient stone scripts, ancient weaponry figures, symbols, figures of various animals and human beings etc.The name of Edakkal Caves literally means `a stone in between’. As the name indicates, it seems that one boulder miraculously wedged in between two bigger ones to create a cave.It is a dwelling that showcases nature’s skill and philosophy on architecture.

A Pied-billed Grebe was an early arrival at Mud Lake in the spring, and it hung around for quite a while - my friend Rudy had some amazing footage he shot of it calling. I had spent time with the one we had on the Lake last fall, and found watching it hunting really fascinating.

I was pretty chuffed when I saw it a week ago putting the finishing touches on a nest. I had some reservations - the nest location was out in the middle of a Lake that is full of Herons, Hawks of several kinds, the occasional Bald Eagle, literally countless Gulls, and then there are the Snapping Turtles, consumers of Goose eggs and goslings. The current crop of Wood Duck ducklings is shrinking by the day, which hardly bodes well.

But we will never know. After a very stormy Saturday, during which the bird hunkered down of the nest, there was nothing but the nest on Sunday, and Monday, and…

Nesting and breeding in most species of bird is successful only seldom. The percentage of any species that survives to the end of the first year of life is very low. And failed nesting is common. So too is predation of nesting birds - from overhead, this bird must have looked like a feast served up on a platter; while these birds are amazing in the water, on the nest the bird would have struggled to move very quickly.

It is amazing, given all of that, that they manage to reproduce and keep going south and then returning north the next year. Which I try to bear in mind whenever I see the birds: it is amazing that you are here, with all the ways it might not have happened.

And a post-script, thanks to my friend Rudy: he has shared some mating images of two of the birds on the Lake this week. So some sort of ‘phase II’ may be in the works. Fingers crossed.

I tried to translate this but it's too difficult to figure out exactly what each symbol is. Ge'ez is an abugida used to write a variety of languages from the horn of Africa.

This is a multi exposure blended image taken in Grand Teton National Park last September. Three handheld shots were taken in quick succession using auto bracketing....one overexposed, one underexposed and one correctly exposed.

The high dynamic range approach allows the nuances of light and color to be captured more thoroughly and the final image more closely resembles the beauty of that magical morning in the Tetons....

(This was taken approximately 15 miles north of Jackson, Wyoming on Hwy 191. The creek you see in the foreground is a finger off of the Snake River)

By the way - I've had several unauthorized usages of my images and I've now had to resort to the following script on the bottom of each of my images:

Yes, the ATL did receive a bit of snow yesterday, but it was very anti-climactic (at least in our part of town), so great snow-related shots were nil to none.

However, as the grey sky gave way to broken clouds, wind, and much colder temps, I could see an amazing sunset was in the works. As it stood, I had a Scout Leader meeting at the same time the show was taking place; so, this shot and (quite a few others) were quickly taken from the parking lot of the building where the meeting was held. Lightroom 2 was used to make this pop a bit, but the base image was as compelling to me.
