The skin of the Elephant is 1-3.5 centimetres thick. The skin on the back and the haunches is the thickest and the skin behind the ears is the thinnest. The skin is important in controlling temperature, especially dissipating heat. The elephant's skin is so wrinkly partly to increase surface area to shed warmth from its body. Oddly, the skin has no sweat glands except for those right above the elephant's toenails. Healthy skin plays a great part in an elephant's vitality. Elephants love to roll in mud and to throw dirt over themselves, both of which protect against sun and insects. They also love to bathe for long periods, and bathing is a good opportunity for the mahout to look for anything unusual with the skin, such as wounds, abscesses and parasites.
This bull Elephant came across this huge rock and immensilly enjoyed scratching itself all over its body before returning to the rest of the herd which had moved further on. Photographed on an early morning game drive in the semi-arid area of Samburu National Reserve, Kenya.

Betty Crocker's scratch recipe, that is. No fancy-shmancy muffins--they're from a box. Taken the other day when my daughter asked to make blueberry muffins. Just add eggs, water, mix, fold in the blueberries, bake, and voilà.
reminds me of the "Ents" .......... just a tiny bit smaller........... and i bet they even scratch slow ;)

Close up of a Fig Beetle (aka Green Fruit Beetle/Green June Beetle/etc.), Cotinis mutabilis. These beautiful, harmless beetles are flying around now here in southern California. They have a tendency to clonk into obstacles when flying - even easily-avoidable ones like houses - so it's good they're well-armored. Up close like this you can see all the scrapes and scratches from its various mid-air collisions.
This is a picture from my roundtrip through Idaho during my recent trip to the US. You might find some dust and scratches on these pictures, which comes from the NIK Silver Efex Plug In. The original RAW file was captured with my infrared 700nm converted Nikon 1 V1.
I went looking for butterflies & ended up with a load of bullocks. They were lovely though if a touch too friendly! Taken at Bentley Priory Nature Reserve.
