Well, this is what happens if you try to grab a jumping rat - remind me not to do it again. If you look at it somewhat closely, you can tell what direction her claws went in and how far apart they are... hey, I consider myself lucky! I only got 2.5 claws out of 4 - could have hurt much, /much/ more!

At first, I was planning to photograph all of my scratches and display them (I have four others, in various places along my hands and arms, some with more claws and some with fewer) but then decided to spare all you viewers.

This was a campaign for Amnesty International, which focused on domestic violence. I based the whole idea on a statistic for domestic violence (one in four women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime), and turned it into a scratch card which played with the idea of 'one in four'. The anti-scratch coating on my glasses is peeling off. This makes it hard for me to see clearly. I've gone back to my old frames until I can get an eye appointment for new glasses. Yes, I'm miffed; these frames are only two years old, but it's not the first time I've had the problem. Sigh.

This young bison seemed to be itchy. It used the fallen tree as a scratching post.

The Wood Bison, Bison bison athabascae, also called Mountain Bison, Wood Buffalo or Mountain Buffalo, is a distinct northern subspecies or ecotype of the American Bison (often called "buffalo"). Its original range included much of the boreal forest regions of Alaska, Yukon, western Northwest Territories, northeastern British Columbia, northern Alberta, and northwestern Saskatchewan It is included on the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada threatened species list.

The Wood Bison is heavy, with large males weighing over 900 kilograms (2,000 lb), making it the largest terrestrial animal in North America. The highest point of the Wood Bison is well ahead of its front legs.

As with other bison, the Wood Bison's population was devastated by hunting and other factors. By the early 1900s, they were regarded as extremely rare or perhaps nearly extinct. However, a herd of about 200 was discovered in Alberta, Canada in 1957. This herd has since recovered to a total population of approximately 2,500, largely as a result of conservation efforts by Canadian government agencies. In 1988, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) changed the subspecies' conservation status from "endangered" to "threatened".

On June 17, 2008, 53 Canadian Wood Bison were transferred from Elk Island National Park in Alberta, Canada, to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center near Anchorage, Alaska. There they will be held in quarantine for two years, and then re-introduced to their native habitat in the Minto Flats area near Fairbanks.

Currently there are only 3,000 Wood Bison in the wild, located in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba.

I made these cinnamon buns from scratch. I used my bread maker to mix up the dough. They were delicious, I was pretty proud of myself.

I confirmed this today morning. To the best of what I can see, it appears to be scratches in the COATING and not the glass.
